Exposed Finishes Made Glamorous

Hooker Furniture Corsica Collection will look great inside a dining room with an exposed concrete finish.

It is not always deliberately done but there are times when an unfinished part of a home becomes one of the stunning features of the entire place. This may not be entirely the work of Michelangelo but you, too, can make an unfinished, exposed part of your dwelling become an architectural wonder.

So, did you want the exposed part to look that way or did you leave it with an exposed finish? That unfinished masterpiece may look bare to some but it can be the stage for an interesting interior design theme that is about to be born.

Exposed Wood: Why Raw Is Beautiful

The unfinished or raw look of that room can be your aesthetic choice. Given this unique decision, you’ve got the leeway to leave the exposed concrete walls, structural steel framework, or hanging light bulb as they are.

Exposed structural wood is also a thing of beauty. This is a more common sight compared to all the other materials used in constructing your home. Displaying wood framework stages a sense of warmth if not a strong connection with the natural world outside.

Oak beams, for instance, can bring a lot of homey feeling. Dark woods provide a great framing effect especially when they are paired with stark white ceilings and walls. The wood can then be used as a line of demarcation when you want to use the open space layout. Lighter types of wood can play well with other interior design elements. Use these kinds of wood on your flooring, staircases and your furniture.

Exposed (Yet Safe) Electrical Accessories

Wiring systems are often not used as a design element since safety is a major concern in this area. If you want to use this concept, then prepare to hang lighting cables instead. This style is the best sort that you can use for art studios or a home that wants to convey an industrial setting.

Going beyond hanging light bulbs means you already need the expertise of a licensed electrician.

FFDM Ancestry Collection offers these wood pieces which will harmonize well inside a dining room with exposed wood beams.

The Sturdiness of Bricks

Brick and mortar buildings can be cold and rough to behold but with the right design elements brought in, they can become the framing properties of a cozy room. To use exposed bricks could mean having one wall as a feature wall or it can be the design of all four walls in a room.

Enjoy seeing the irregularities of brick which contribute to the beautiful color and texture in your home. Bricks can effortlessly contribute to the warm glow of your warehouse style home.

If you happen to live in an old home with a brick inner wall, then all you have to do is to topple down the less sturdy wall and make way for the exposure of the beautiful, not-so-new-but-still-great-looking walls. If you don’t have such walls in your home, then invest in faux brick panels.

Exposed Pipes

Whoever thought that exposed pipes could ever become anything else but a plumber’s major job? The pipe is an awesome material to use if you want to get creative. If others can create sculptures with copper pipes, then you can also make good use of fittings and fixings.

The pipes can both be functional as well as decorative. If you’re in doubt on how to use them as a design element, then have an engineer help you.

Exposed Concrete

Unfinished concrete has long been used as a design element in many industrial-themed homes. Just like in brick, it is the concrete’s irregularities that make it an imperfect yet beautiful interior design material and aesthetic element.

Choose from these exposed finishes and find out which works best for you.

Remodeling Expectations – Are You Ready for Them?

Thursday, May 19th, 2016

The Hooker Furniture Chatelet Collection

The Hooker Furniture Chatelet Collection

If this is the first time that you’re remodeling your home, then you probably don’t know what to expect – just yet. This is a huge undertaking so it is but natural that you would feel nervous. There is that never-ending concern about the total cost of the project, the length of time needed to finish it, and what interior design elements would make it work. Setting your expectations is necessary in addressing the fears that you might be feeling at the moment.

Lots of Dust

Yes, expect plenty of dust. Don’t expect just a fine layer as this can gather in all parts of your home as the construction pushes through.

There are some ways that you can control this. If it’s possible, close off the area where construction is being done, from the rest of your home; set up a temporary wall so that the noise and won’t fill your entire home.

Any running air filter or air handler will surely pull some dust from the air towards the parts of your home which are not under construction. If you can, completely block warm air so that cold air will go back to the construction site. If you don’t do this, then you will inevitably pull the dust from the area that is being remodeled.

Before you go about in blocking the vents, though, make sure that you get in touch with an HVAC company first. This is to ascertain that your furnace will still work properly.

And Then There Was Noise

The noise that you will be hearing will be incessant. There will be lots of scratching, sawing, and sanding, even thumping. There will also be bellowing compressors so don’t expect a quiet home for the duration of the construction.

Try to set up a place where you can get a quiet nap. Don’t expect to have restful nights unless you set up a tent far away from the construction site.

Zero Visitors

Don’t fret; your zero visitor zones won’t stay that way for long. Pretty soon, once your friends find out that your major renovation is finished, prepare for a flood of visitors. You will have ample time by then to show them around and be proud of the changes that have taken place in your home.

Always Expect the Unexpected

Any construction project has unexpected events. You could encounter asbestos (especially if you are remodeling an old home), irregular framing, incorrect plumbing, electrical systems that are waiting to burst, etc.

Of course there won’t be laughter once you see these things so if you don’t want to worry about these, then you have to consider hiring a contractor. Count on having these major mishaps turn into working systems by the end of the construction project.

Another unexpected event is the change order where added or reduced costs take place. It could be because you preferred a different theme in the beginning and you ended up just improving your current theme. Cash concerns such as this is quite normal.

Setbacks

There might be workers getting ill, snow falling, or cars breaking down. Whatever the event that will take place, it could turn your two-month project into a three-month gig for the contractor. So talk to your contractor and meet halfway. Both of you should have the resilience to adapt to any schedule shift.

Furniture Decisions

Once you change the look of your home, you also need to change your existing furniture. If you’re tired of the mounted cabinetry, then it’s time to embrace the lovely wood pieces either for the bedroom or the dressing room.

Depending on your themed, find the correct set of furniture to seal in the look.

The Bedroom That Feels Restful

Tuesday, May 17th, 2016

Fine Furniture Design Bedroom Panel Headboard, Queen 5.0 1050-451: This room may be enclosed from any picturesque views but the bed, nightstands and bench at the foot of the bed all beg for attention.

Fine Furniture Design Bedroom Panel Headboard, Queen 5.0 1050-451: This room may be enclosed from any picturesque views but the bed, nightstands and bench at the foot of the bed all beg for attention.

Have you ever slept in a bedroom that feels absolutely right?  Most of the time, a restful sleep can be attributed to the design of the room as well as the furniture pieces that were used there. Creating even a simple bedroom design is a lot harder than it seems. Just think about the kind of bed that would go in that room and you would already be wracking your brain for ideas.

Okay, every bedroom has to have a bed. This single piece of furniture will dictate the placement of each and every design element that will soon be used in the bedroom. Whether you are remodeling or are designing from scratch, you have the power to control the elements that go inside your bedroom.

Create a Circulation Plan

Not every bedroom is given access to the beautiful outdoors. There is also the issue on the amount of available space that you can work on. An effective workaround to these is to establish a simple circulation.

Keep the circulation to just one side of the bedroom. The hospitality industry makes good use of this concept. About 90-percent of hotels make use of the same floor plan because it may be basic but the layout works.

This circulation becomes a tad more challenging when the bedroom comes with a bathroom. When this is the case, save a little space for your bed, cabinet and nightstands. Use the left-hand plan when you have a huge closet or a bathroom in your bedroom. This plan requires a longer hall before the bed is accessed.

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Grand Palais One-Drawer Leg Nightstand is sure to balance an equally stunning bed.

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Grand Palais One-Drawer Leg Nightstand is sure to balance an equally stunning bed.

Highlight the View

The bedroom will always feel a lot nicer when you have a great view of the outdoors. You should plan to have an immediate view of the scenery outside rather than have an immediate sighting of the bed.

When you are designing a new bedroom or remodeling an old one, see to it that you would highlight the great vista outside. More so if what you have is an immediate view of the lush garden or a serene lake.

Connecting with the outdoors might not be feasible in all kinds of climates though you should harness natural light during the months that you could.

Adding French doors can make the space look more visually enticing.

Privacy Matters

What you are setting up is a bedroom so never forsake matters pertaining to your privacy. A small foyer can separate the family room from the bedroom.  Veer away from layouts where visitors could look directly into the bedroom.

Harmonize

You could browse for different bedroom themes and designs in interior design magazines and websites. Find out which paint color works best, what types of furniture will go with your chosen theme, and what accessories you would use to harmonize everything.

Paint tops the list when it comes to elements that achieve brilliant design. Having bold colors on the walls may be a bit too much for a bedroom but you can use a focal wall if you really must have a bold-colored wall. Designers may debate over the painting scale but a rich, dark wall as opposed to the bright ones throughout the rest of the bedroom will surely make the room more interesting.

Use upholstered furniture pieces then repeat the color scheme throughout the room. Fill this relaxing area with imaginative touches, perhaps a chair that would stand out and add an interesting flavor.

Area rugs will surely avoid a bland look. Your chosen design might even be minimalism but a single addition will create an impact that is hard to ignore. Fear not when it comes to your bedroom design. You can calculate your moves but bed daring at the same time. In short, don’t forget to have fun!

Mexican Interior Design: It’s Hip to be You

Thursday, May 12th, 2016

Flexsteel Living Room Round Cocktail Table 6629-034 features solid wood, wicker and glass – all elements that work perfectly inside a Mexican-inspired home.

Flexsteel Living Room Round Cocktail Table 6629-034 features solid wood, wicker and glass – all elements that work perfectly inside a Mexican-inspired home.

A famous part of many Spanish homes is the so-called comedor or dining room. Mexican homes are no different. Their dining spaces are adorned with many Spanish-inspired elements such as colorful paintings, religious relics, and pottery.

The ceilings of many Spanish dining rooms are also used as canvas for beautiful paintings. Choose from the many possible themes for the ceiling painting. In the absence of a colorful painting, have a luxurious chandelier hung.

Mexican interior design is a relative of the Spanish design. If you want to have this kind of theme in your home, then you can also use ethnic fabrics and drape them on the colorful dining chairs. These same fabrics can also be used on Mexican shelves as they can add a different level of interest and characteristic to the informal space.

Borrowed Architectural ElementsMexican homes often come with arches, thick walls and high ceilings. More often than not, hand-painted pottery lies across the table and shelves (talk of the Spanish people’s love for flair).

Mexican interior design has similar elements with Spanish architecture. Try looking from top to bottom and you would immediately notice the wooden support beams (also known as the vigas), the latticework or the latillas and the carved corbels which support the beams on the ceiling. These corbels also serve as decorative elements.

Now look at the floor where you’re standing at – Spanish flooring is often made with the most colorful Talavera tiles. These will surely draw the eyes towards the center of any room. The Spaniards have also introduced to the Mexicans the unique Saltillo tiles which are terracotta tiles that are best used in areas with warm climates.

‘Care to visit the Mexican-inspired bathroom? Then you would probably find a claw foot tub in a nook.

Mexican Accessories

When you’re out to frame the beautiful features of a Mexican home, be sure to have a lot of vibrant colors on your palette. You can use recessed lighting to provide a more magical touch to intimate rooms in your home. This style can be used in the bedroom or dining areas that are not used for frequent social gatherings.

Place a weathered chair in a corner then drape it with a huipil which is a traditional garment from Mexico. You would certainly love the embroideries on your huipil. These have special cultural meanings among Mexicans.

A bedside table can be covered with the African kente cloth then topped with a small yet antique wooden saint. In the absence of the latter, you can also resort to silver objects coming from India as they also offer a distinct, rustic appeal.

Look through your family’s heirloom furniture. You might already own some weathered chests which you can use at the foot of the beds. If not, www.mccreerys.com offers a wide array of these lovely wooden chests. They have a rustic appeal that is hard to equal. Add to their beauty by investing in iron candelabra.

Add red silk shades for a more elegant look.

Dress Up the Entry Hall

Know as the zaguan, the entry hall can feature hand-painted things on the ceiling. The more antique-looking the door is, the more useful it would be in your Mexican-inspired home. Complete the look with a Mexican tile rug. Add wall sconces for a more culturally-inspired space.

If you want to go authentic on your Spanish design, you could also use a bench right by the entry hall. This is quite common in Spanish haciendas where the hired help lie in wait.

Blend traditional elements with some of the new ones that depict your personality. Be vibrant, be colorful, have flair.

Dare to be you.

Commercial Space to Home

Wednesday, May 11th, 2016

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Studio 7H Slumbr Queen Metal Upholstered Bed’s simple lines and unfrilled looks make it the best bedroom piece for your commercial space turned residential unit.

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Studio 7H Slumbr Queen Metal Upholstered Bed’s simple lines and unfrilled looks make it the best bedroom piece for your commercial space turned residential unit.

A Visionary’s Project

Turning a commercial space into a new home is a project that requires vision. When faced with the task of turning an old building into a habitable one, make sure you are able to embrace the quirkiness that you find in the first place.

When you think that you need to cover the damaged plaster walls, think again. You can, instead, polish the said walls and highlight their aged patina. The glass walls front could be kept where they are so the

Now it’s time to convert these rough diamonds into something of a modern convenience. Warehouse conversions are getting more and more popular especially in cramped cities such as San Francisco, New York and Chicago.new inhabitants could have a great view of the downtown area. What you get when you retain the old building parts is the old character of the industrial building but with an updated look.

Don’t think that converting a commercial space into your home is going to be an easy task, though, as it won’t be. Industrial buildings do not offer the same plumbing systems. The walls and window placements are also far from conventional.

What you can benefit from are the open space layouts and high ceilings. While these features are difficult to tackle, they can offer visual delights that no other physical structures can offer.

Prepare for other sorts of surprises such as asbestos tiles, lead paint and other concerns such as unstable foundations. These are pretty common with older types of buildings. Know all these features from the onset as it can take months for such to be removed.

You will need to hire a professional electrician to set up a new electrical system for the commercial space turned would-be home. Plumbing must also be taken care of. See also that natural light is welcomed into your new home. Request for pendant lights that can be used for both functional and aesthetic means.

A huge part of your planning should – preferably – include a landscaped courtyard right at the heart of the building. See if you can have the roof deck dressed up for your social requirements.

As for the penthouse, this is the perfect place for a huge master bedroom that is adjacent to the master bath. You can even house your private art collections in that spacious area.

Finding a place in the city is getting more and more taxing. Buyers are looking into even bigger homes which they are willing to refashion if necessary. In the city of Manhattan, for instance, a parking garage is already being converted into condo.

The creation of commercial to residential is an effective way of widening the options for real estate inventory. If you don’t plan on turning the whole commercial structure into a residential space then you can retain a commercial section. The front part of the home could be your home office while the back part would serve as your place of rest.

So go ahead, seek them out – factories, warehouses, and mills. These may not look like cozy spaces at first but redesigning them can convert them into beautiful, modern homes – just believe that you have it in you to go through this huge project.

Minimalism As A Way of Life

Friday, May 6th, 2016

The soft, clean lines of the Century Furniture Bedroom Upholstered Panel Side Wings 849-170W make this piece the perfect set for your minimalist dwelling.

Simplifying one’s life is not an easy task. Not a lot of people would delve into it and would go out of their way to change other people into their simpler way of living. In the process of learning minimalism, though, you will learn that the little changes you make in terms of habits, attitudes, even your environment, can have a huge impact in you as an individual.

Every Little Bit of Happiness

Minimalism can begin with these simple steps –

  • Say goodbye to your TV. You will save hundreds of hours every month if you stop watching TV every day. You will also be less exposed to commercials which only prod you to buy unnecessary stuff.
  • Read stuff online. Instead of accumulating magazines and newspapers, read them online instead. This will save lots of trees and keep your home free from clutter.
  • Keep only the simplest furniture. Say no to bulky, foamed pieces.
  • Remove excessive decor. Also, you can store stuff in cabinets, drawers and shelving units.
  • Always clean up. Daily sweeping is much better than massive weekend cleanups.
  • Get rid of stuff that you no longer need. Keeping things that you no longer have any use for is unnecessary.
  • Organize your clothes inside closets. Do this also with your watches, jewelry, scarves, and bags.
  • Buy clothing that you will really Some people buy clothes in a whim. If you don’t frequent parties, then just buy clothing that you will use at work and at home, plus some.
  • Eliminate bathroom clutter by buying multipurpose products (shampoo and conditioner in one, moisturizer with sunscreen, etc.).
  • Keep the leftovers so you can cook a different dish using it next time. Properly plan your meals and as much as you can, cook in batches.
  • Throw any gadgets that no longer have any purpose to you or your work.
  • The countertops should be kept clutter-free. Cooking food becomes a lot easier if everything is in its proper place.
  • Use the printer as little as possible. Digitize your work instead.
  • As much as you are advised to store your clothes, gadgets, jewelry and other stuff inside cabinets, you can also apply this to your files. Use an external hard drive or cloud storage for all your files.
  • Know that perfection does not exist so learn to accept things that are good enough. You can never have a pristine home all the time; having a tidy one should be good enough.

Minimalist Furniture

What makes a minimalist setting stand out despite its absence of frills and bulky stuff is its simple elegance. The creation of a minimalist space is not difficult. All that it requires is knowledge in balancing certain interior design ingredients.

A Good Command of Harmony

A space that does not have too many items in it requires stricter design rules. You have to be more careful of elements such as proportion, balance and harmony. The furniture that you choose should be in proportion with the rest of the room’s contents. This means that no single thing in a room should be too big or too small.

Quality First

Minimalism speaks of quality before quantity so invest in high quality furniture, lighting and accessories. Look for unique finds and take time to shop around. Plan every piece that you will include in your home. It could be as little as the frame of an artwork or the richness of the fabrics.

Calming Palette

There are, of course, minimal spaces that showed color but, as a whole, if you would review the concept of minimalism, it should be simple and down-to-earth. As much as you can, stick to neutrals and calming hues. Any color that depicts the beauty of nature is highly recommended.

Wood and Your Bathroom Floor: Why They Can Be Best Friends

Thursday, May 5th, 2016

Maitland-Smith Bathroom Monkeys Soap Dish 1253-470 is the perfect complement to a rustic flooring.

Maitland-Smith Bathroom Monkeys Soap Dish 1253-470 is the perfect complement to a rustic flooring.

One of the most overlooked bathroom remodeling steps is probably the flooring installation. Most people are used to the idea of standing on tiles while taking a bath that they didn’t think there were any other options available. If you were presented with a smorgasbord of choices, would you give wood a chance?

Sure, wood and water aren’t the best of friends especially when you are thinking of setting up a wooden floor shower. But this is one of the most elegant upgrades that you can make to your bathroom. Wooden slats offer a ski-lodge kind of vibe in your home. It could also evoke a sunny, deck-like feeling right inside your bathroom.

Using wood is a great material for the bathroom shower area remodeling project. It can effectively warm up the space. It also brings to mind Japanese baths that are so calming. Water trickles through the wooden slats to a shower pan. The wood floor will hide any unsightly drains, paving the way for the perfect minimalist setup.

If you intend to use dark, stained woods, then be ready to bring about a bold statement. Even modern spaces can use a little daring move through a usually restful place. If this move is too daring for you, then you can always rely on the usual rustic appeal offered by a lightly-stained wooden platform. This raised platform gives a modern home its much-needed contrast as it looks and feels rural.

You can also pair wood with tiles and wooden accents. Slatted flooring will fit right into any design scheme.

The Challenges

There will always be challenges in using wood inside a usually wet place. It could get slippery especially when there is constant water in the shower area. This is why it is best to resort to tropical woods such as ipe or teak. These are naturally water-resistant which is perfect for the shower room you envisioned. After installation, you can bring in some indoor plants to complete the Zen-like refuge that is your new bathroom.

Maitland-Smith Bathroom Sitting Dog Tissue Holder 1254-233 will make rustic bathroom flooring more exquisite.

Say Goodbye to Tiles

It’s time to break free from the notion that tiles are for bathrooms and bathroom should have tiles. While tiles can have the loveliest patterns and designs, it doesn’t necessarily follow that you should use them in your bathroom, too.

Begin prepping your bathroom by addressing any moisture problems. While certain kinds of wood are proven to be able to resist water, it is still best to fortify against water issues. You can install a fan to hasten the evaporation of water. You can also add a second barrier between the shower’s steam and what’s at the back of the ceiling. Seal the wooden surfaces using boiled linseed oil or urethane.

If you want to paint the wooden flooring, then be sure to prime your base coat with oil. Ascertain that backs and end grains are also coated so that the wood is thoroughly sealed.

Wooden Choices

Bare wood will eventually stain so coat it with urethane to keep the wood grain. Use different-colored wooden cabinets for added storage inside the bathroom.

Decks and docks do use woods and these are areas that are shifting from dry to wet. This just shows that proper care is what would make your wooden bathroom floor last.

One other option is the pallet floor made from cedar, pine or Douglas fir. These are all great materials for the standard shower. If an entire floor is a little too much to handle, then you can always begin with the much simpler wooden bathroom mat.

To use a wooden mat, begin by sealing and cleaning using household detergent. This will make the mat less slippery.

The use of wood inside the bathroom creates a mixture of materials that deliver depth and warmth – the very things that tiles won’t be able to effortlessly offer.

Achieving Mirror Magic

Wednesday, May 4th, 2016

Hickory White Bedroom Seymour Mirror 243-42

Hickory White Bedroom Seymour Mirror 243-42

Mirrored walls can make or break the overall look of a room in your home – do you agree? Having mirrors replaced is one of the top to-do tasks that most homeowners have especially when they are redesigning their entire home, however, under the wrong pair of hands, this can go the wrong way. Mirrored walls could either add visual interest or they could make the room appear pretentious.

Learn to Break Up

Mirrored walls don’t have to go from ceiling down to the floor. If you think that interrupting the flow of mirrors is impossible, well, you’ve been misinformed.

Break up the mirrors using other materials so that you are able to stage a more dramatic scene. A mirrored wall can replicate the design of a beautiful loft window. This can be a DIY project. Just invest in a good set of mirrors which you can prop against a beautifully-painted wall.

For a bolder statement, paint one wall black then hang a mirror on that wall. Depending on your theme, hang wooden, metal-framed and other wonderfully-designed mirrors. You can also alternate mirror panels with wood panels. Mirroring an entire wall then encasing it in wood over the top will give the room a flush appearance.

Illusion of Space

A few people, more so those who live in earthquake-prone areas, are keen on keeping their mirrored items. Hanging items, for them, is a dangerous thing to do. Hanging a mirror behind their bed is a big no-no because of safety issues.

A safer alternative is to install a ceiling to floor mirror opposite the bed instead. This is a technique that will provide your bedroom with an illusion of space. You can also use this technique to the rest of your home.

A black-painted bedroom would also benefit from having a large mirror installed. The light reflected from any light source would be distributed in the room, hence, the darkness is lifted.

Fireplace Mirror

The fireplace is already a focal point by itself. If you surround a fireplace with mirror, then its light will be reflected to the rest of the space.

Mirror-Lined Powder Room

Most powder rooms come with limited space. Since this is so, you could line one wall behind the sink with mirror. This mirror will also serve as a functional backsplash, providing the perfect look for either a traditional or a modern powder room.

Make It Big

A floor length mirror would best serve its purpose when placed behind furniture in compact spaces. This has to have the same width as the furniture so that the piece would look purposeful, even prominent. Console tables are such pieces since these are often placed in the entry way without much thought.

With a large mirror behind a console table, it would look functional while looking elegant. For safety, install the mirror using brackets, to the wall. Never rest the mirror on the floor without having safety brackets placed first.

This same concept can be used when placing a mirror behind any light source. Whether you have a pendant light or a wall sconce, a mirror will surely maximize the distance that the light will be able to reach.

A full-length mirror can be an effective design element rather than a standalone decor. A mirror wall is most effective if you use multiple yet similar small mirrors that comprise one huge mirror wall. It can be disorienting to have an entire wall of newly-installed mirror.

Frames can help as would trim.

Stylize with Mirror

Your mirror can create the most wonderful salon style, pattern or gallery type arrangement. Putting a mirror into such grouping will make the room appear airier. This is also true for a mirror installed on a wallpapered or boldly –painted wall.

Entry Way Styles: Making a More Welcoming Threshold

Saturday, April 30th, 2016

FFDM Vintage Classics features this wooden piece complete with mirror and other interesting accessories to welcome your guests.

FFDM Vintage Classics features this wooden piece complete with mirror and other interesting accessories to welcome your guests.

Do you believe that you’ve only got one chance to make a good lasting impression? This means you have to make the entry way as welcoming as possible to all of your guests. The entry way reflects who you are as a person. This should be a place where comfort and happiness fuse as people walk through the first door of your home.

Here are ways to set the tone for the rest of your place –

Layer the Light

A beautiful lantern can make a huge difference in a relatively small place. The entry way can also be the perfect place for a table lamp or a beautiful wall sconce. There are various lighting options for different moods.

Iron sconces can add a unique sense of style in a place where an added glow is much welcome.

A fabulous pendant lighting fixture can also make a huge difference. Actually, it can make or break the look offered by beautiful doors and carvings. This is not a usual fix that homeowners do to their entry ways, however, this is a spot that you need to spend more time and money on.

Vintage lighting will give the area a distinctive appeal. If you have an old home with equally old wiring, make sure that you commission a competent electrician to update the wiring systems for you. After the rewiring project, you can already spruce up the place with a new paint job or by adding interesting accessories and furnishings.

Highlight the Art

In many apartments, entry ways are quite small but this does not automatically mean that you can no longer make a statement. Your home’s entry way can still be chic if you hang the correct kind of artworks.

Install a statement mirror or a geometric rug to warmly welcome guests. Let them feel that they are welcome in your home and that they are about to see a stylish dwelling.

Your statement piece can be one unique piece that is an heirloom. Or it can be a piece of furniture that is newly-bought yet has the features of a would-be heirloom.

That grand foyer with a small table is a rather saddening state to be in. A beautiful, spacious entry way must have a fabulously large console table, a huge mirror, and a bench. Sconces should be present not just to welcome guests but more to highlight the beautiful architectural structures and beautiful furniture pieces.

Accents such as bins of flowers, an umbrella stand, and throw pillows will add a dash of personality to a usually regular-looking entry way.

Style Extension

The entry way must show your visitors what they would see inside your home. If you used rustic textures in your entry way, then these must also be seen in other rooms.

Set the tone at the entry way.

A Rug Is a Must

Sometimes, the entry way dimensions can be a tad trickier for rug placement. The floor is a wonderful place to put color, pattern and softness. Since the entry way has high foot traffic, find a rug that can sustain this kind of traffic.

Be Bold, Dazzle ‘Em

Primary colors can offer an awesome entry way to any home. Nautical style can be started with a basket of oars right by the entry way. Geometric rug in bright colors spells playful and unique.

Architecture needs to be respected. You can still show your personality through wall covering. Wallpapering is a classical take on beautifying the walls yet it comes with a modern twist. You might also have an art collection that can be highlighted by the right wallpaper.

Have you ever tried organizing your office desk? It may seem like a simple task but it could actually take an hour or two for a lot of people. As soon as the task is done, maintaining its kempt look could be difficult. So, you might ask yourself – do I really need a huge desk or will a small one do?

Cables and other computer accessories always pose organization concerns. They can provide a nightmare for those who do not know how to keep them out of sight. Other concerns include mounds of paper, office supplies, printer, and other home office stuff.

These become doubly problematic once space becomes an issue. Not all homes can have ample space for a dedicated home office. If you have not been given the luxury of having a whole room in your home for your home office, then don’t fret. There are many other options.

Choices include a corner in your laundry room, a big closet, and many other places where you have never thought you could actually squeeze in a desk before.

Here are some spots where you could locate your new workstation –

The Bedroom

Having large closets in the bedroom leaves you without any need for an additional dresser. Use this extra area as a place for a small desk instead. The bedroom is a quiet, soothing space so this means that you can work in total silence if you want to.

The Basement

Another quiet place where you can put your desk and chair is the basement. An unfinished basement is not just the perfect spot for a game room. It can also be used as your new workstation. Just picture this – you can take a relaxing game of foosball or ping pong after a long day of work.

Isn’t that sublime?

The Kitchen

The kitchen is no less than the hub of your home so this can be a great space for you to place your office desk. Now you might think that it is not conducive to a productive day but some people work better when there’s a lot of activity going on about them.

If you are not the type that can work when your family is buzzing about, then you need to find a quieter place.

The Laundry Room

You can always find a nook inside the laundry room to accommodate a desk and a small chair. This space can be dedicated to homework or bill paying. If you run the laundry at two loads each week, then this room is quiet most days of the week.

You can always slink off to this room during the evenings when it is a lot quieter.

The Nursery

Your little one – preferably an infant – could share the room with you. This space is usually quiet especially when you little one is asleep. If you don’t require a lot of paper storage then you can even use the desk drawers as extra space for your baby’s clothes or toys.

The playroom is the perfect spot to place your desk. This is more applicable if you pay your bills during the time that your kids are asleep. This spot can be used by your kids, too, if they need to finish some homework during the day.

The Living Room

Never overlook the living room. You can have a desk installed in one of the pocket spaces inside that room. The shelves can be decorated with supplies that you use in your home office.

The Entry Way

This is one spot that isn’t busy all the time. Rather than placing a regular console table in the foyer, see if you can have a desk and chair set up there. This will give you a place to put your keys and letters, too.
