FFDM Palm Island: Makira Glass Top Dining Table. The base of this dining table has lovely designs that will not be enjoyed as much if another material is used as tabletop.
There are moments in interior design history when glass was the star of the show. Do you remember those glass doors and shelves on bookcases? These might look tacky these days with simplicity being emphasized. If you want to use glass to decorate your home, then find out how you can make it look chic and more sophisticated.
The Entryway Glass Table
The simple glass table that comes with a clean frame and zero details is just the perfect piece for an entryway. Since this area is often crowded with many stuff such as shoe and coat racks, having glass for a table will visually open up the space.
The Glass Dining Table
If you want to focus everyone’s attention towards the dining table, then have a glass tabletop with a unique base. This allows you to admire the lovely base as it will also open up the breakfast nook or dining area.
The Glass + White Hued Table
Just imagine how spacious and airy a room would look with glass combined with anything white. Even a small room would look spacious when glass walls are set up. Just picture the dining room separated from the patio outside. Now imagine having white accents indoors.
Glass + Texture
You can also create interesting textures when the glass counter has a unique design. The edges don’t have to be perfectly straight or linear. The counter will have more character this way.
Glass has two interesting properties – its transparency and reflective surface. The latter could cause glare if the material is not installed properly.
Inspiration for the glass textures draw inspiration from nature such as a bee’s nest, raindrops, trees, the choices are actually limitless.
Laminated Glass
This is glass that’s made with two or even more layers of glass. There are two ways to produce laminated glass – the poly vinyl butyral or PVB is made through extreme pressure and heat. Sometimes, other polymers are used such as polyurethane (PU) or ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA).
Special applications require the use of cast in place (CIP). This is made by pouring resin to the space between two glass sheets.
Glass as Faux Materials
How would you react if you saw an elevator that looked like it was made of wood, then you ran your fingers on its surface only to find out that it’s actually made of another material?
Glass is a pretty material because it is elegant and clean. This material can also be chemically-strengthened to toughen it up. Called durable glass, interior walls and, yes, even elevators, can be damage and scratch-resistant. Though glass is lightweight, it offers a durable option for elevators and other structural needs.
Glass can also be laminated into panels or it can even be printed. With the right style, it can also be integrated into modular systems. Should the panel sustain damage, then all you have to do is to replace the said panel – it’s cheap, it’s quick and it’s easy to do.
Glass can also make interior design more exciting with other ideas such as glass stairs. Glass staircases can increase the sophisticated look of a home. The glass treads, stringer (or diagonal support) and glass railing all offer a spacious look. You are also guaranteed that there won’t be any natural light blockage.
Glass floors are often used in conjunction with glass staircases. Be sure to install ample lighting underneath this kind of stairs. Glass walkways are enclosed areas with unblocked views. Imagine linking two parts of your home using this walkway. Very few could be more dramatic than that.
Glass bathrooms are often seen as a threat to privacy. Yet the right solution could dispel this wrong perception. Privacy can still be maintained in this kind of bathroom if you install the type that changes its opacity.

Hooker Furniture Home Office Auberose Bunching Bookcase
The home office should no longer be that unused nook or a dedicated part of the basement anymore. It is now 2017 and home offices are already parts of some residential amenities. It is now on par with programming the dining room or the kitchen. So, whether you are working for yourself, or for some clients, the home office is that place where you can work more productively.
Have Less
Tidiness is a huge part of home office design. Don’t let paper eat up the space in this important room in your home. Scan documents instead of printing them out. File them in electronic folders and be sure to keep backup files.
Move towards the kind of space that is smart and uncluttered. You should go through your house and rethink about the positioning of major appliances and electronic devices. Think how you would place your computers, projectors and wireless printers.
Make sure that you have ample cabinet space for all of these. Store but don’t cramp them inside one storage unit.
Multi-Purpose
The workspace may not be located in just one area. This means that being productive may mean mixing routines with a few stints. You have the freedom to choose the design or style that you would use. Do you want an airport lounge type of home office? Or would you want to have a party-theme for this special place?
Some of the most in-demand projects for many architects these days include command centers that open up to the homework bars or kitchens. Here, the parent can work as the children work on the adjacent area.
Non-compartmentalization is huge nowadays, so much so that homeowners specifically request for this style. Most homeowners now want a home office that does not look at all like a home office. There are even those who request for the most playful designs. Some want this room to be a sort of getaway space, free from the usual sterile surroundings that are characteristic of home offices.
The Shed Office
Are you aware of the tiny house movement that is currently sweeping the nation? A shed office is no different. The shed is an effective way to separate the business and personal environments. This trend is now quite popular especially on the West Coast.
The biggest market for shed home offices is California. This state wants the best of the most comfortable and modern home office furniture and architecture. Photographers and writers are common clients for such an office.
This new home office trend is also engulfing the music industry. Musicians want to have a studio sort of home office complete with the essentials of their career.
An Entertainment Area
The home office is also now fusing with the entertainment area. Monitors and TVs can now mean the same thing. Have some pull-out shelves and cabinetry installed so that all your gaming consoles, DVDs, laptops, and other multimedia devices are concealed when not in use.
An Outdoors Office
You have probably thought of your attic or the basement when setting up a home office. No, though, that such days are gone. An ergonomic workspace can be that current sunroom which you can transform into your office space. Imagine you basking under the sun while you think of ideas to make your business fly.
A module home office can also be set outdoors or right in your backyard. This means that you won’t even need to disturb the current layout of your home.
As to the colors, you may want to use emerald green or turquoise which are both huge this year. Instead of the usual white or boring beige, you can stick to the various shades of gray. These will allow you to use accents without being too bold.

Biltmore Collection: Metal Canopy Queen Bed
The embodiment of a lavish home is a place where amenities are provided to the owner. This owner feels like royalty because all around, there’s opulence and extravagance. Just the mere mention of the word luxury spells fully-stocked kitchens, complete game rooms, tennis courts right in your own backyard, home gyms and such. Yet you don’t need to set up these opulent rooms and outdoor spaces just to feel lavish at home.
Here are some tips to make your home a luxurious one –
Open Space Layout Is a Winner
A luxury home cannot be called as such minus a grand entryway or a winding staircase. So always go for the airy, open space layout if you’re aiming to have a luxury home. This is a part of the criteria for luxury homes according to the 2013 survey conducted by Coldwell Banker, seller of premier real estate properties.
Technological Innovations
Every luxury home needs to have ample technology. The plushest homes are tech-trendy. These are also the ones that stay at the very top of the real estate market.
Imagine a home that can be locked and has climate control, all coming from a single press of a button from an iPhone. These are now built-in features for luxury homes. The builders who install such automation features all know the trends and technological needs that are hottest in the market these days.
There is also a growing trend for design elements made from reclaimed materials. Of course, more and more homeowners are becoming aware of the carbon footprint that they leave behind, hence, there are those who now use reclaimed wood flooring, wood beams and doors.
Fully-stocked Kitchen
What could be more luxurious than having a fully-stocked kitchen? Opulence is only existent where there is a magnificent kitchen somewhere. This kitchen must also be appliance-lined, with the storage units also filled to the brim.
It is also not impossible to find a walk-in pantry as well as wine racks or fridges.
As if having a luxuriously filled kitchen isn’t enough, you can even go beyond this by having outdoor pool or an outdoor kitchen to boost.
The best amenities of the outdoor kitchen include a sink, a built-in grill, stainless steel countertop areas, a refrigerator, and food and drink storage. There must also be plenty of seating areas for those nights of entertaining guests.
Increase the level of luxury by having a large pool and a cabana all set up. This expansive pool must also have water features that will make the place look more leisurely. Have the al fresco flair become the style in this outdoor haven.
Prime Location
Home ownership is all about having the best location. Being rich or luxurious means having a slice of paradise, location-wise. Have an expansive, tree-lined, private property that will set the standard to luxurious living in your neighborhood.
Remember that the wealthiest buyers often want exclusivity with regard to their properties. This means that you must put a high level of security to your oasis. While you must be able to relax and enjoy freely, this does not mean that you have to be lax when it comes to security and safety.
Extra Rooms
Movie and gaming rooms are also common in luxurious living. It is a given that the biggest homes – especially those of Hollywood celebrities’ habitats – have these extra rooms. There are also those who have home bars, home gyms, indoor pools, wine rooms, even basketball or tennis courts. In their absence, you can simply create demarcation lines for the different areas that you want to designate.
Lastly, be able to create a bedroom that is fit for a queen or a king. Again, don’t forget the technology in this special room.

Capel Incorporated Floor Coverings Penelope Rug 3872RS Grass
The country’s love affair with polka dots started in the mid-20s when Miss America was first photographed wearing her polka dot swimsuit. It was around 1928 when Minnie Mouse, a Disney cartoon character, was introduced wearing – guess what – dress with red polka dots. The rest of the 1930s were wonderful years for this design. A decade later, Frank Sinatra sang the Polka Dots and Moonbeams. This song captured the U.S. polka dot obsession.
It was late in the 1940s when the polka dot was used by Christian Dior in their new collection. A lot of the clothing then were bedecked with polka dots. Dior also told Vogue that their collection sought to make women look more feminine. The most popular actresses wore this design – from Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe to Lucille Ball.
By 1951, Monroe was photographed wearing the famous polka dot bikini. It was nine years later when the hit song itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini was released. The ‘60s brought in more polka dot mania from music to paintings.
Polka Dot Interiors
Whether polka dots have been on the runway or at any fashion event, polka dots have always been huge. The great news is that this style isn’t just for kids anymore.
Polka dots bring in a huge amount of youthfulness and cheerfulness so if you decide to wear them or to decorate your home, your decision will surely make your life quite fanciful.
Polka dots have always offered a huge impact on fashion and interior design. They remain quite popular even till today. No matter what the size of the polka dots, they can be used in furniture, decals, wallpapers, throw pillows, wall art, draperies, even paint effects.
Polka dots are sure to make any space appear more cheerful, even smarter. You can begin using polka dots in your home by making tiny or big dots as the focal point of your habitat.
Whether you use tiny or big dots, there is no doubt that they will refresh the look of the room. So, use polka dots on your furniture, walls, pillows, rugs, towels, draperies, even your shower curtains.
Polka dots used in different design elements can also be combined. Use them in the pattern and colors that you want. Accept the fact that polka dots are adorable even on curtains. Imagine having pink curtains with polka dots in a girl’s bedroom. These dots can be used practically anywhere as long as you add a little color or pattern in the process.
Polka dots can also be used in adding a more interesting piece to look at on a blank wall. Bright and colorful dots will fit right into a toddler’s room, too. These will also look great inside a boring hallway or a playroom.
Polka dots can be incorporated in artwork. Even small accessories such as throw pillows will also look great when dotted with the right colors. A nice pop of color on burlap pillow is a great way to decorate, too.
Polka dots in a smaller room will make the place look busy. If you don’t want this to be the case, then you can settle for subtle and pretty. At times, it is difficult to look for something cost effective or interesting to do on the walls of your bathroom so you can always resort to polka dots. Instead of installing new tiles, painting polka dots on the walls can also make a huge difference – and they’re a lot cheaper, too.
If you want to make a graphic statement in any room, then it is probable that polka dots are all that you need. This is a tasteful way to go in terms of design so give it a go.

The creation of a Zen space in your home will make it possible for you to breathe, de-stress, and rejuvenate your mind and body, even your spirit. The home, after all, should be a haven where one can feel secure, safe and well-nurtured.
Everything Is Energy
Know that everything in your place is made up of energy. Where there is a great amount of paper or any kind of clutter, it is assured that the flow of energy will be hampered. It would be difficult to feel relaxed and calm in the middle of disorder.
Begin setting up your Zen space by, first, cleaning up even if it’s just one part of the home.
Understanding how energy flows and how it can affect everything around it makes the creation of Zen a lot easier.
Clear Out Clutter
As soon as you have cleaned up the clutter, you will feel that your breathing will improve and that everything seems to be lighter. You will then realize that Zen can sometimes be as easy as sweeping and throwing a few things.
Another way to bring down your stress levels is to open the windows and add some water features. The addition of a fountain is a huge step towards the right direction. If you’re unable to find a tabletop fountain then you can also place one outside the main door or by the window. The sounds of water flowing will surely relax you and your family.
Look Down
Yup, it’s time to look down and see what changes can be done on your flooring. If you are growing tired of your carpeting, wood or tile floors, then feel free to install some area rugs. These will help provide a cozier and warmer look.
Woven, rag or bamboo rugs are wonderful accents to any Zen space.
Add Ambience
Candles are an easy way to add a romantic ambience in your home. They are second to none when it comes to Zen lighting. Plants can also bring in a natural touch to your space. This will help feed anyone’s soul. Add some floor pillows or a Buddha to inspire you on your meditation corner.
Throw blankets can also be rolled up inside woven baskets. You can also do the same thing with your yoga mat.
Be sure to draw the curtains since light can effectively lift anyone’s mood.
Designate a Relaxation Room
It would be helpful if you define an area in your home as your relaxation chamber. This could be your porch, bedroom, or even a simple bathtub. If you have extended family members who are living with you, then be sure to inform everyone about your schedule for relaxation.
Since your relaxation time is your time, then you must be able to find a routine that will surely relax you. This isn’t the same as watching TV, okay? Fitting options include quiet time, yoga time and reading. Pick an activity that can help you contemplate and relax.

Go Earthy and Light
Zen is all about being natural. It includes the use of soft tones such as whites, light browns, and grays. The colors in the room should match the one dominant color that you pick.
Being Mother Nature’s advocate also means bringing in the outdoors. This means putting potted plants or flowers in vases inside your home.
Natural light must also be welcomed in. No place is Zen without natural light flowing in. The rays of the sun have a wonderful effect on the mood and spirit of the home’s dwellers.
Symmetry through Balance
Zen is also concurrent with the Yin-Yang philosophy. This means that symmetry must exist in your home. Have lamps on both sides of the bed or you can have flowers on one side of the dresser. Try this technique in your bedroom so that you will be able to relax more deeply.

FFDM’s Antebellum Collection: Landscape Mirror
Don’t you just love the idea of creating a refreshing look in your home? There are many ways to achieve this. This new visual lift begin by breathing life into your home. This can mean buying new furniture or creating a new layout for your home. This is especially true when your home is a little bit small.
Mirrors
One of the most effective decorative idea especially in creating good flow in your home is to add a mirror. The addition of this reflective surface can open up a space that feels dark or small. Mirrored surfaces effectively reflect light, therefore, creating depth.
Mirrors can create a brighter space, thus, the area feels much larger. Smaller walls can still look perfect with a round mirror and a detailed frame. For homes with ample wall space, you can go ahead and create a gallery mirror.
Area Rug
Installing a new area rug is also a good way to refresh any room. Rugs offer a natural way of providing the framework to a space. This is especially true with larger area rugs as they can serve as an anchor point for furniture.
Area rugs can help define a space, particularly an area. They are often used to section off a floor. This flooring definition helps in the rearranging and redecorating processes and it can also help in defining boundaries and separate areas.
The use of colors and patterns on rugs is yet another anchor that can influence the overall color scheme.
Focal Point
You can establish a focal point even within a seating area. Doing so will help provide structure to any room. TVs and fireplaces are the right elements to zero in on. These naturally gather the people in but be sure to pick just one.
The focal point provides a settling point for the eyes. This can also relax the gaze, preventing the beholder from looking all around the room. This can also direct the flow of the entire design. Furniture, especially seating units, should be arranged around the focal point. Once you define this, make sure that the decorating process slows down since you won’t be needing a lot to define the area anymore.
Open Up Entryways
Of course, it also helps to create flow in your interior design if you learn to declutter. Set up the entryway in such a way that energy flows freely throughout the space. This is a basic principle of Feng Shui. This should create serenity from the moment that the visitor walks into your home.
An entryway that has been cleared will allow you and your visitors to move throughout the rest of your home.

Marrying Wall Colors with Furniture
Another decorating idea that will create a beautiful flow in your home is to paint the wall with the same color as the table, couch or chair that is seated right in front of it. A piece of furniture that matches the walls will create an illusion of open space. Neutrals such as grays, whites and pastels offer the cleanest backdrops. Be sure to use the simplest furniture structures and shapes.
More on Colors
Color preferences are as varied as people’s personalities; so, to create a more cohesive look and feel, be sure to be consistent with your paint color. The hallways and foyer are connectors that should have the neutral colors that were described above.
It also pays that you consider the sightlines when using more than one color for your home. An example of this is, when you’re standing in the living room, you tend to have a view of the dining room, kitchen and the foyer. Since this is so, be sure to use different shades of the same color. This will give these areas a sense of cohesion.

FFDM’s Cachet Collection: Upholstered Top Cocktail
Patina is a technical term that is used when a blue-green layer forms on the surface of copper due to corrosion. This corrosion is brought about by the metal’s exposure to oxide and sulfur compounds. This is what happens when copper is exposed to either human-induced or natural corrosive events. From the golden red color that it originally showed, it turns into deep brown then to the hues of green and blue.
Patina is also commonly used in the antiques industry yet this is a misuse of this term. Patina is not correct if it is used to describe the oily buildup on stained wood furniture. Many antique appraisers are used to saying – don’t strip off the patina from that antique chair – and other such reference to any old wooden furniture.
Patina is the pigment or color of cast metal sculpture. The process of patination happens when cast metal is applied with some kind of pigment. This pigment application is not like painting an old fence. Patination is applied onto a surface and not the result of the wood’s or metal’s aging process.
Patinated Metals in Interior Design
Planners and architects know the importance of interior design. Design, after all, is the process of harmonizing design elements.
Brass is a material that is categorized as a metal for high-status homes. This is special because it can be applied with a unique patina. Back in the day, this patina is applied naturally through the constant touch of human hands and the ravaging weather.
These days, patinated brass offers a finishing touch to the best-looking rooms. In contemporary homes, brass offers a unique aesthetic look.
There are other ways of adding patina to brass. Through these different methods, refined surfaces and color nuances can be achieved. Patinated brass can then be used on floor panels, ceilings, walls, portals, doors and facades.
Patinated Steel as a New Design
Traditionally, timelessness is the ultimate goal of every interior designer. These days, though, contemporary interiors are once again setting the stage for polished metals and straight lines. Patina is slowly being rediscovered through patinated steel.
Patina can be added to steel using old recipes. The result is brought about by the oxides that offer hues ranging from dark green to rust red. Every finished metal sheet can be a unique work of art when used in structures that were made to appear three-dimensional. Bathing the piece in warm hues adds the needed depth.
Darker Steel in Interior Design
The blue tone as well as the shimmer offered by burnished steel bring about a lot of looks. Blue steel is common in tool and mechanical engineering.
Black steel can be offered in bigger formats. The deep, dark surface is made for classic and elegant interior design, meaning, it can be used on panels, shelves, columns, consoles and walls.
Hastening Patinated Copper
If you happen to have copper pieces in your home, then make sure that you age them properly. Remember, you don’t have to wait for five years or more just to get the look that you want. You can actually use ammonium chloride in achieving the patina for your copper pieces.
Copper is one of the few metals that offer an alluring and rich tone that’s considered haute couture. It is a fascinating metal that adds a splash of color just like silvers, bronzes and golds. Variations of copper can be used as extraordinary ceiling. When used on walls, copper can be used with metallic gold on stencil patterns.
Wall finishes can also be copper-colored. Create faux plaster walls by using metallic paint together with glazes. This can also be applied on the range hood.

FFDM’s Summer Home Collection features this Cottage Wicker Arm Chair.
It is said that a man’s home is considered as his castle. This is true on so many aspects. For instance, home and castle may be looked at differently these days. The latter implies just a building, a fortress complete with walls, towers and just about everything that keeps people out. The rest of the place that looks inviting is considered home. But have you ever thought about your backyard? What good would it do to the rest of your home?
The Backyard and Pool Parties
Just think of all the pool parties that you will be hosting in your backyard. A spacious yard can be installed with a hot tub or a pool – this will become the center of many family gatherings. Just imagine the number of people who live in small condos and apartments.
Any homeowner who has a backyard with a functional pool can earn you the title of the best neighborhood host. If you do get to earn this, then make sure that you design your space with the right furniture pieces.
These backyard or patio pieces have to be weather-resistant. Be sure to invest in pieces that will not give in to winds and strong rains.

Backyard and Landscaping
Landscaping needn’t be complicated. And, yes, you don’t have to hire a landscape artist each time. If you want to be more adventurous by taking on the landscaping project yourself, then don’t hesitate. This can be the next fun activity for you and your family.
Gardening becomes simple where colors, shapes and plant types are repeated.
If you happen to have a backyard with limited space, then it is important that you make the most of the available space. Take advantage of the types of plants that serve more than one purpose. A tree can serve as a beautiful backdrop while it also serves as a privacy implement.
Creating contrasts is also a basic landscaping idea. You can pair burgundy and purple hues with gold and chartreuse. Together, these colors work well than when they are used singularly.
Add Lots of Greens
Backyard design means learning to put the right plant at the correct space. Know that plants establish more quickly. They can bulk up in the long run so you have to learn to take care of root systems and take care of the greens so that diseases and insects won’t ravage them.
If you live in a region where winters are always difficult, then you have to plant greens that will survive the harshest snows. Learn what the Hardiness Zone is all about here..
Use Durable But Comfy Furniture
While it is crucial for you to invest in durable furniture, it would make more difference if you also consider having comfortable pieces placed in your backyard. Consider metal, wood, resin or wicker.
Wood furniture is most fitting if you love pieces that look and feel natural. The best kind of wood furniture is made from heartwood lumber that’s been center-cut. It must also have a consistent grain and the most durable joints.
Pine and cedar are softwoods that can age to a silvery-gray color unless you seal or paint them. Have yours pressure-treated so that they will last for years outdoors. Other kinds of woods that you can use include teak, Australian Jarrah, and hardwoods.
Metal is also a versatile material to use for outdoor furniture. Aluminum and iron are two of the chief types of metals that are used. If you love the look of woven wicker, then have the all-weather or regular type. Both look great but the former is the most suitable to any outdoor space. Regular wicker can only be used in covered areas in your backyard.
