The Polka Dot Design: Its History and Transition to the Present Day

The country’s love affair with polka dots started in the mid-20s when Miss America was first photographed wearing her polka dot swimsuit. It was around 1928 when Minnie Mouse, a Disney cartoon character, was introduced wearing – guess what – dress with red polka dots. The rest of the 1930s were wonderful years for this design. A decade later, Frank Sinatra sang the Polka Dots and Moonbeams. This song captured the U.S. polka dot obsession.

It was late in the 1940s when the polka dot was used by Christian Dior in their new collection. A lot of the clothing then were bedecked with polka dots. Dior also told Vogue that their collection sought to make women look more feminine. The most popular actresses wore this design – from Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe to Lucille Ball.

By 1951, Monroe was photographed wearing the famous polka dot bikini. It was nine years later when the hit song itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini was released. The ‘60s brought in more polka dot mania from music to paintings.

Whether polka dots have been on the runway or at any fashion event, polka dots have always been huge. The great news is that this style isn’t just for kids anymore.

Polka dots bring in a huge amount of youthfulness and cheerfulness so if you decide to wear them or to decorate your home, your decision will surely make your life quite fanciful.

Polka dots have always offered a huge impact on fashion and interior design. They remain quite popular even till today. No matter what the size of the polka dots, they can be used in furniture, decals, wallpapers, throw pillows, wall art, draperies, even paint effects.

At times, it is difficult to look for something cost effective or interesting to do on the walls of your bathroom so you can always resort to polka dots. Instead of installing new tiles, painting polka dots on the walls can also make a huge difference – and they’re a lot cheaper, too.

If you want to make a graphic statement in any room, then it is probable that polka dots are all that you need. This is a tasteful way to go in terms of design so give it a go.
