Patina is a technical term that is used when a blue-green layer forms on the surface of copper due to corrosion. This corrosion is brought about by the metal’s exposure to oxide and sulfur compounds. This is what happens when copper is exposed to either human-induced or natural corrosive events. From the golden red color that it originally showed, it turns into deep brown then to the hues of green and blue.
Patina is also commonly used in the antiques industry yet this is a misuse of this term. Patina is not correct if it is used to describe the oily buildup on stained wood furniture. Many antique appraisers are used to saying – don’t strip off the patina from that antique chair – and other such reference to any old wooden furniture.
Patina is the pigment or color of cast metal sculpture. The process of patination happens when cast metal is applied with some kind of pigment. This pigment application is not like painting an old fence. Patination is applied onto a surface and not the result of the wood’s or metal’s aging process.
Patinated Metals in Interior Design
Planners and architects know the importance of interior design. Design, after all, is the process of harmonizing design elements.
Brass is a material that is categorized as a metal for high-status homes. This is special because it can be applied with a unique patina. Back in the day, this patina is applied naturally through the constant touch of human hands and the ravaging weather.
These days, patinated brass offers a finishing touch to the best-looking rooms. In contemporary homes, brass offers a unique aesthetic look.
There are other ways of adding patina to brass. Through these different methods, refined surfaces and color nuances can be achieved. Patinated brass can then be used on floor panels, ceilings, walls, portals, doors and facades.
Patinated Steel as a New Design
Traditionally, timelessness is the ultimate goal of every interior designer. These days, though, contemporary interiors are once again setting the stage for polished metals and straight lines. Patina is slowly being rediscovered through patinated steel.
Patina can be added to steel using old recipes. The result is brought about by the oxides that offer hues ranging from dark green to rust red. Every finished metal sheet can be a unique work of art when used in structures that were made to appear three-dimensional. Bathing the piece in warm hues adds the needed depth.
Darker Steel in Interior Design
The blue tone as well as the shimmer offered by burnished steel bring about a lot of looks. Blue steel is common in tool and mechanical engineering.
Black steel can be offered in bigger formats. The deep, dark surface is made for classic and elegant interior design, meaning, it can be used on panels, shelves, columns, consoles and walls.
Hastening Patinated Copper
If you happen to have copper pieces in your home, then make sure that you age them properly. Remember, you don’t have to wait for five years or more just to get the look that you want. You can actually use ammonium chloride in achieving the patina for your copper pieces.
Copper is one of the few metals that offer an alluring and rich tone that’s considered haute couture. It is a fascinating metal that adds a splash of color just like silvers, bronzes and golds. Variations of copper can be used as extraordinary ceiling. When used on walls, copper can be used with metallic gold on stencil patterns.
Wall finishes can also be copper-colored. Create faux plaster walls by using metallic paint together with glazes. This can also be applied on the range hood.
