The Huntington House Living Room Love Seat 7227-40 is the best piece to own when you have limited space.

The Huntington House Living Room Love Seat 7227-40 is the best piece to own when you have limited space.

When first considered, it might be tempting to dismiss condo living as a case of lazy living. The homes that people live in are a reflection of who they are. In effect, their homes are the outward manifestation of who they are or wish to be. Would you like to take on a design project on your own or would you like a professional to help you in designing your condominium?

The deeper meaning of home now includes condo living. Back in the day, a home is where there are much family activities, it is also a place where special dinners are held, and where relatives go to during the holidays. Today, small houses and condos are considered to be a smart choice when time and design are a bit challenged.

Instant Gratification or Long-Time Planning

There is a part of condo living that related to instant gratification yet this is what more and more modern people are getting into. People hire experts to practice effective delegation. While people hire therapists so they can unload their problems on them and not their family, this is also the case with interior designers – they are the ones who will worry about what to do with the condo design.

Limited Square Footage, Endless Possibilities

Knowing how to design a small space is crucial and a necessary skillset when you are out to design a condo unit.

Living in condominiums means you are okay with multi-functionality. You can install a room divider that can also serve as a bookshelf such as the photo here shown –

You also need to be an expert in customizing the area and in making necessary adjustments. A sofa, for instance, could also be pulled out as a bed during the evening, hence, the term now commonly used – sofa bed. There are also adjustable dining tables that could fold away and morph to a desk during work hours.

Condo living also means you should maximize every space that you see – even those nooks and crannies. Your investment will be optimized if you also learn how to use every inch of space. The nooks inside the dining area could be easily transformed to a reading corner, a breakfast nook or a tiny home office. The possibilities are almost boundless.

Break down the design task into fun phases if you have to design the area on your own. Remember that decorating your compact home is the easy and fun part. There are some phases wherein you need to put in some hard work.

Of course, you need to do some measurements. This simple task will let you know how much you can actually work on in terms of square footage. This will also help you prepare for the next step when you get down to ordering the materials that you will use. Proper measurement means you won’t be ordering too much wallpaper or paint or that you’d get the wrong size of furnishings.

Buy all items all at once. As soon as you have chosen the furniture, paint, fabrics and other materials, then you should order them all at once. There are some that will take longer to arrive so it would be best to give those a head start.

In case of difficulty, pick up the phone and call a design team or interior design expert. You should also begin contacting electricians, painters and upholsterers. Get referrals from your friends and relatives. Ask why they trust their chosen experts.

Begin from the floor then work your way up. Stain, paint or install tiles on the floor before you bring in the cabinets and other furniture.

Lastly, arrange your furniture, add the accessories, then enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Crisp and Clean: Why Black and White Is the Color Fusion to Beat

Friday, November 25th, 2016

Using black and white when designing your home means you’re ready to make a stunning and a dramatic statement. You can take advantage of this seemingly basic yet electrifying mixture by knowing also how to maximize the other design elements.

There is a rule in designing wherein every room can actually use a little black. To some, this might seem strange especially if you love the look of pastels and other light colors in your home. But do give the black and white combination a chance, for a moment. Black can easily become the focal color that could anchor, ground or even make a room look more sophisticated.

Black can also be used in lighting fixtures, accessories, paint, trims and on one furniture piece. This will serve as the focal point for the rest of the design scheme. This will also serve as the outline that would set apart specific objects and areas.

Black, even by itself, is already striking so imagine it combining with the equally stark white.

Black and white looks fresh and clean and is also elegant. Without a doubt, this is the perfect color fusion for modern and contemporary styles. Country French decorating, though traditional, could also use the power of this combination by having a few black and white accents.

Here are additional ways to make black and white work for your home –

The Black and White Flooring

This is a great place to begin. Find a black marble with white baseboard molding. If this isn’t available, use white ceramic tile with black borders. Alternating vinyl black and white squares are also a popular option.

White Walls-Black Art Frames

Having an ivory wall is the best background for prints, framed artworks, and photographs. Find a frame that’s made of wood and painted in black. Choose white and black matting for your artwork or you can choose to add some color in either gold, red or black mats.

Black and White in Small Rooms

This is a wonderful place to use your black and white palette. A small bathroom or powder room will look more elegant with black marble for the countertop and paired with a white sink. Add some shiny, gold fixtures and accessories to complete the look.

Striped Stuff

Imagine those crisp, white linens for your bed in a black-walled bedroom. If this is too dramatic for you, then you could always go with the black and white stripes for your bed. Black chair to offset the white bed is also a common bedroom combo.

Light green, yellow and pink will look great as accents during the summer while bottle green, red or golds would look powerful during the coldest months.

Touch of Black in a Chiefly White Room

When you are out shopping for fabrics, be sure to be on the lookout for plaids and colorful prints. Touches of black would look great in these. Add more black to the room through accent pieces such as table lamps.

Black and White Is Contemporary

What could be more contemporary than this color combination? Use black or anything dark on your carpeting and rugs then have the walls painted in white. For the focal point, be sure to pick vibrant accent colors. Find fabrics with equally contemporary design to finish your task.

Traditionally Black and White

If you’re thinking that your design options have been limited because you’ll only be using black and white, well, think again. Should you choose to use in cottage style interiors, you can have black paired with a white toile fabric. The tablecloths, chair covers and pillows should have gingham checks.

Sunset Party: The Steps to Effectively Use Warm Colors

Thursday, November 24th, 2016

This American Cherry piece by FFDM offers warm hues that is suitable to your homey, comfortable taste.

This American Cherry piece by FFDM offers warm hues that is suitable to your homey, comfortable taste.

There is no doubt that colors are very powerful. They can heal, stimulate, soothe and even be fun. When you are committed to doing a makeover in any room in your home, then it is not simply buying a piece of furniture or adding some lights that will make a huge difference. All these design elements will not amount to anything if the colors chosen by the homeowner are unappealing.

Getting to Know Warm Colors

The palette for interiors is divided into two huge groups – the warm and cool colors. Warm colors are yellows, reds, beige, oranges and some creamy colors. Try looking at the color wheel and you will find the warm colors on one side of this color wheel and the cool ones on the other side.

Hybrid colors are right where the cool and warm colors converge. Purple and green, for instance, are hybrid colors and they can be cool or warm depending on the mixture. Lime green is both yellow and green but it has more yellow which is why it is considered a warm color.

Exciting, Social, Warm Colors

Oranges, yellows, reds as well as off-whites are hot and stimulating. They can soothe the emotions, though, which is why they are generally used in places where people gather – restaurants, many homes, and other commercial spaces.

Warm colors work best in social rooms like the living room, kitchen and the dining room. They are also great in home bars and other areas where robust activities are common.

Warm colors have a tendency to advance, meaning, they drawn in space. A red living room, for example, would feel more intimate because of its passionate look and feel. A cooler color would be chosen if the homeowner or designer decided to make the room look and feel more expansive.

Orange is also an oft-used warm color. It can take some load off the red hues if the latter have been overused. The warm color is also your best friend if you have a large yet sporadically furnished space. Closing up some of the space and making it feel more intimate is as easy as resorting to warm colors.

If you’re still undecided on what paint scheme to use, then take a careful look at the elements in the room that you’re about to design. Wanting the space to draw closer means you have to go for the warmer palette.

Mixing and Matching – Totally Allowed

You can experiment by mixing and matching some cool and warm colors. You can do this to advance your designs and to make rooms more exciting. Remember that the nearer the colors are to red, the warmer they are.

Consult the color theory regularly to know the framework in describing color behavior. There are some exceptions to the rule, of course, but warm colors almost always advance while cool colors recede.

You’re more than ready to start fusing these exciting colors so let’s go –

Warm White Wall: The use of warm colors does not have to be drastic. You can’t paint an entire house orange. Try painting your white-walled library with some warm palette. Add wooden floors, some gray furniture and exciting bronze accents. There, fusion accomplished.

Next, you could also turn your red kitchen to a cozy one. Soften the cranberry red walls as well as the wooden floors with some green or blue furniture and accessories.

Take a look at the undertones, too. A gray kitchen could be either cool or warm depending on what undertone your paint has. Consider the kitchen accessories and other colored appliances when shopping for a new kitchen color.

Lastly, when thinking of tone, fuse two colors on opposite sides of the wheel to add character – just make sure that you balance the design.

Ocean Deep: Tips in Setting Up Your Home for Coastal Living

Thursday, November 24th, 2016

The Tommy Bahama Home Living Room Golden Isle Sofa 1604-33 has colors and patterns that are perfect for your beach-inspired home.

The Tommy Bahama Home Living Room Golden Isle Sofa 1604-33 has colors and patterns that are perfect for your beach-inspired home.

Would you like to learn some tips that could help you set up a beach-themed home? Here they are –

Open and Breezy

You would need tons of light to make the look appear legit. To let in more sunlight, use sheer curtains only and pair these with a white slipcover.

You can add to the breeziness of the room by hanging a wood-framed mirror. This should be a commanding object that would also reflect the light outside.

Surround these elements with other items in varying scale but in the same style.

Pair Colors

What could be more coastal than an all-white room? Just add a few bursts of color and you’d achieve a sunny look that’s hard to equal.

Use Pearly Shells

Find some items made with shells like a chandelier, a lampshade, or any piece of furniture. The shells offer a more elegant and sophisticated beach appeal.

Be Minimalist

No coastal home is complex. It is often understated with subtle colors such as blue and white. Pair this color palette with any coral-inspired accessory to complete the uncluttered look that’s perfect for your chosen theme.

Search for Eccentric Colors

Beach-inspired homes can also appear interesting if you add a little quirkiness to them. Tropical elements that may seem simple could offer the eccentricity needed for your home to still stand out. Consider having pineapple wallpaper, some basket pendant lighting fixtures, and some beach balls by the entryway.

Wanna bring in some sand? Don’t hesitate.

Being eccentric does not mean that the peaceful feeling would vanish. You can still have a soothing coastal theme by incorporating beach glass bottles, white shells and furnishings.

Rattan and Wicker Are Your Best Buddies

Rattan chairs look natural in a coastal environment. Add it to a casual dining room or put it in your patio to make the most of the picturesque views outdoors.

Use Water-Worthy Blues

Any adorable beach home has a shade of blue somewhere. So go ahead and make those white walls stand out by blending them with varying shades of blue. Doing so will give you a calming effect, one that’s common in coastal areas. Finalize the look by adding nautical pillows and some wicker baskets as storage units.

Use Assorted Textures

A wide array of fabrics could provide a relaxed atmosphere that is equal to beach living. A small painting with hints of blue will evoke visions of the skies and the grand ocean. Have this framed and placed atop the coffee table. Add balled twine and some distressed accessories for a weathered look.

Set Up a Gallery Wall

Create a wall that would serve as your gallery for those simple black frames. Switch the artworks that you would use in these frames as the seasons change. You can also frame simple works such as starfish and shells.

The Winners Only Bedroom Panel King Bed BAC2001KN will sit beautifully in any rustic or ocean-inspired bedroom.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Why not take your theme and go all the way? While having painted the walls with white and adding blue accessories, create a boathouse of sorts by hanging an oar right above your bed.

The Marine Dining and Living Areas

Buy some chairs which you could paint with semi-gloss white. White is a color that would make these pieces disappear right to the walls. The space would then look less busy and could even help open it. White furniture on white walls as backdrop also is a super cool pairing which has a huge impact on your design.

Use this same mixture on your living room. To offset the monochrome look, use flowers and accents that come in vibrant colors. Limit their use, though, in order to stick to your marine theme.

Pretty Patios

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

FFDM Harbor Springs offers this dining set in neutral hues.

FFDM Harbor Springs offers this dining set in neutral hues.

There are some interesting areas in your home where you can actually have a great view of the nearby surroundings. Any room with a glass window will provide you with the perfect chance to see the picturesque views without you stepping out. If you are yearning for a breath of fresh air, though, while not foregoing privacy, it would be wise to design a garden patio.

The patio is a courtyard that’s surrounded by structures. These often come with trees and shrubberies and are commonly paved. Patio is a Spanish term that means pasture or that parcel of land at the back of homes. Back in the day, patios were set up for animal safekeeping.

In modern American and English gardens, a patio is an area where family and guests could sit and enjoy some meals. This could also serve as a reading area for the perennial bookworm.

Begin your patio project by buying the right patio furniture. Find some interesting sets so that you won’t have to worry about balance, cohesion and all that these words convey. Once set up, all that’s left to do is to find additional pieces that will make these anchor pieces more interesting. Also, you just have to enjoy the outdoors with your family. You can hold gatherings here that will surely be the talk of the town for many days to come.

Pick the Best Place

You can’t just assign a part of your home to suddenly become the patio. A lot of patios are adjacent to the structure of your home especially to the kitchen when another purpose of this space is for outdoor dining.

If detached, the patio can serve as a dry area for a retreat now and then.

Consider the Size

The patio is supposed to be intimate so find an area that’s cozy. Huge gatherings could make this choice a bit more difficult, though. You should find a spot that could handle a huge crowd if this is the case. A way to figure out the size is to set up the tables and chairs on the lawn then measure the area that they cover.

Play It Safe

Playing it safe? Then you can use a neutral palette for your patio project. This usually monochromatic approach will only be effective, though, if you balance it with some interesting textures. Without these tactile experiences, the place would look dull so be sure to look for the most unique rough or smooth furniture surfaces and accent pieces.

Consider the Outdoor Elements

Another thing that you need to remember is to invest in weather-friendly furnishings. Be smart – not just with your outdoor style but also – with the materials that are used on your design elements. While you can freshen up the look of the patio with fabrics and the many colors that they come in, still, you have to consider that these can withstand the outdoor elements and would be able to dry quickly.

Accessorize

As much as you can, beautify this space in your home by adding some plants. These can either be placed on the patio’s floor or atop a drum table or a pedestal. Up the visual appeal in your patio by adding furniture complete with intricate details.

For a more minimalist approach, you can focus people’s attention on the garden. You can do this by keeping the furniture simple – preferably minimalist – and the rest of the décor should point to the interesting garden that’s just within reach.

You should also include various table sets and chairs for more flexible seating choices.

Hire a Builder

The weight of this project could be too much to bear for some people, especially the neophytes. Assign the more complex projects to professional builders and the sand-based patio as a DIY task for you and your family.

Rise and Shine: Breakfast Nook for Winners

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016

The Wesley Allen Dining Room Set 320 is compact enough for the breakfast nook you are envisioning.

The Wesley Allen Dining Room Set 320 is compact enough for the breakfast nook you are envisioning.

One of the small yet endearing areas in many homes is that nook right by the kitchen – the breakfast nook. There are so many ways to make this space much more interesting. After all, it is important to make this area comfortable and inviting since the most important meal of the day can be served here –

Fill It with Light

Have the nook set up right by the wall where the largest windows are found. This is the best spot to grab a hearty meal or just a cup of coffee to jumpstart your day. A small, rectangular dining table should be appropriate whereas three small chairs or two small chairs and a bench could be used to complete the setup.

A Tiny Space

Small as it is, the breakfast nook can be a tiny banquet for those who know how to design it. Place a few chairs right by the window. See if it could sit three to four people. The breakfast nook can also have a special bench with some storage space within.

Talk of optimizing one’s living area.

How About a Breakfast Booth?

If you don’t mind borrowing a few square feet from any adjacent space to the kitchen, then you can create a more spacious breakfast nook. This special eating area will provide ample seating for three to four people so they could sit out of the cooking area while the food is being prepped.

A breakfast booth is the right place to add some kitchen storage, too.

Yes to Natural Light

Make sure that you use only minimal coverings for your windows. The breakfast nook should be bright and sunny especially during the morning when the family is gathered there to eat. See if you can magnify the light and airy look with soft, yellow cushions and table accessories.

See if you can have a go at the L-shaped breakfast nook layout. This is the best layout that offers the most number of extra places for people to sit.

You can make the nook even brighter and more beautiful if you use lighting highlights such as white walls. Add some colorful cushions to make the bright nook more interesting.

The Vintage Nook

A breakfast nook shouldn’t only be bright and sunny, it must also fit perfectly to the unused area in your kitchen. More often than not, this is that unutilized nook where only dust used to gather. Now, with the breakfast nook in place, you can have a bench that wraps around the corner and additional seating.

See if you could bring in some vintage furnishings to add a homier vibe to this new eating area.

The Modern Nook

If the vintage look isn’t your style, then you can always go for the modern design. Find a modern table and chair set, some pendant lighting, and some interesting wall décor. Paint the walls white in the kitchen and the nook in order to achieve visual cohesion.

No breakfast nook should be without this Maitland-Smith Accessories Shagreen Leather Inlaid Tray 2520-017.

No breakfast nook should be without this Maitland-Smith Accessories Shagreen Leather Inlaid Tray 2520-017.

It’s Okay to Mismatch

You can use mismatched chairs to create an eclectic look but one that’s still unified. Use the paint color as your base hue for the rest of the breakfast nook design elements.

Breakfast Nook = Comfort

Just like many other cozy eating areas, the breakfast nook must also take advantage of great outdoor views. The picturesque lawn or cute garden can provide the best backdrop to a simple breakfast nook. What could be more relaxing than to see the beauty of Mother Nature as you enjoy your first meal?

Find some low comfortable benches to keep everything looking casual.

Looking sleek and chic does not mean you have to forego comfort. You can still feel relaxed in an ambience where a white table, a small chandelier, and some interesting fabrics create a fashionable look. Hang some mirrors strategically to open up this part of your dining area.

Creating the Lived In Appeal: Steps to Making a Homier Place

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

Hooker Furniture Living Room Hampton Stationary Sofa is made with beautiful leather that's rustic and homey on every angle.

Hooker Furniture Living Room Hampton Stationary Sofa is made with beautiful leather that’s rustic and homey on every angle.

Most homeowners wish for one thing – that their home would appear inviting enough for visitors to linger there. Making a home more comfortable and memorable at the same time isn’t easy. You have to undergo certain steps that will make the place visually enticing.

The Front Door Says a Lot

Never underestimate the power of a well-though curb appeal. Be sure to clean up your front porch and to place a welcome mat. If that welcome mat isn’t available, then you can always go for the hello signage right on your front door – this should welcome your guests outright.

Adding a leafy, green plant right by the side of your front door is also another way to make guests feel more at home. Just imagine the wave of relief that your guests would feel once they see the splash of green. Continue this homely ambience by bringing in potted plants.

Make Good Use of Design Tricks

Put yourself in your guests’ shoes and imagine what they would think of when they first see your place. With this in mind, you might want to pay closer attention to the proper positioning of artwork, lighting, accent pieces and such.

Create the Best Furniture Layout

Make sure that your guests can get around your furniture easily. You and your family might not mind moving out your dining chair every after eating but guests might not like this idea. They especially don’t know how to get in and out of nooks in your home so don’t make it an uncomfortable experience for them.

The idea is to move throughout your home with ease. This means you should be able to move freely when you access key areas such as the front door, the seating areas, the kitchen, bathroom and the dining room. Also, never squish oversized furniture in small rooms.

Try a Curtain Wall

Hang curtains all across the wall. This is different from the usual curtain hanging on the window. This will add visual interest and will add a cozy effect. There are various curtain options in the market these days. Choose also from the different panels that would run all across a particular wall in your home.

Add a Throw

Seasonal design projects need not be costly. Sometimes, all you need to alter are the accessories such as the colors of your throws. These are accessories that you can throw over your sofa or chaise. Try purchasing a plaid throw to up the hominess instantly.

Paint the Walls Dark

As you already know by now, painting a room is an effective way to update its look. This also spells savings since you won’t spend much with a painting project compared to other makeover projects. Paint the walls with a dramatic color. Choose from charcoal gray to chocolate brown. The dark walls would make the room appear more compact, hence, a lot homier. Be sure to add metallic pops to prevent the place from appearing too Goth.

Set Up a Nook

Create a comfortable nook by adding a loveseat or a sofa up against one wall then cover it with pillows. Have your blankets displayed as you create a snuggle zone. Bring your creativity level up a notch by using a ladder that will act as a bookshelf.

Hang Unique Lights

Who says string lights are just for Christmas? These glitzy and glamorous lights can still be used beyond the holiday season to make your home warm and cozy. Buy some copper wire string lights to add a shimmery effect.

Light a Fire

And what could be homier than to sit in front of a blazing fireplace during those cold nights? So go ahead and dress up the mantel and the fireplace with some rustic elements from the outdoors and a frame or two of your family photographs.

Uttermost Accessories Floral Bunda Art 33439: Floral design doesn't always have to be fresh flowers in vases.

Uttermost Accessories Floral Bunda Art 33439: Floral design doesn’t always have to be fresh flowers in vases.

It is difficult to discuss florals and just be left with a single category since there are many patterns, sizes, styles and color for each variety of flowers. Floral prints may seemingly be an intimidating interior design element to use but with just a few useful guidelines, you should do fine.

Pick What You Love

It is important to like or, more so, love what you are doing or you would be burdened by the design that you are trying to create. It would be useless to use floral patterns if you’re not comfortable with them. Don’t think bright when you’re dealing with floral design as it is not always that way. Florals can also be understated more so if the details are minute and the patterns are not too bold.

Learn to Layer

You want to achieve the right balance in your floral design so be sure to use layers. Use solid colors as well as patterns in the same hue as your chosen floral print. Doing so should add an interesting diversity in the room.

Adding more patterns is also a good way to control the appearance of an overly feminine space.

Florals Can Be Masculine

Now who says florals are just for women’s homes? You have some options such as abstract shapes and leaf patterns instead of the usual flower petals. Remember that the more intricate the design of the flower is, the more feminine it would appear.

If you want your home to be gender neutral, then be sure to pick patterns that also come in gender neutral hues such as greens, blues and browns. Again, don’t use the smaller and more complex floral patterns if you want your home to be his home, too.

Pick a Pattern That Matters

It is possible that your want for florals may have sprung forth from your affection for a pillow, bedding or even an artwork. Achieve cohesion through the use of a color scheme wherein your floral inspiration is based. Define a central color as well as the complementary colors that would make the room appear composed and ready to welcome guests.

Scale and Your Mood

Having large florals on something small would look hip and cool. A pillow with some mini florals, on the other hand, will have a more vintage feel.

Floral Furniture Aren’t Just for Golden Girls

Your floral skirting for your furniture piece does not have to look like your grandma’s property. Pair any graphic piece with it to offset the tired look. You will, instead, achieve a rather eclectic room. Cap this look with an Oriental rug to make your living room stand out.

Florals Mean Energy

The secret to pairing prints is the proper use of background color. Find a large pattern then pair it with two thumbnail-size patterns which share the same eggshell-colored background. This should help you achieve that cohesive look effortlessly.

Should Florals Fail

There are times when no matter what you do, florals simply won’t work for your design so you can go ahead and still use a few botanicals by bringing in ferns planted in unique urns. Classic-looking urns add elegance which is why they are best used on entryways and hallways.

Hanging plants are also a welcoming classic. Use petunia to add a vibrant shade of purple or pink on your porch.

Shrubs and small trees are also great in defining walkways and an entry porch. As for other sorts of plants, whether you would use them as a houseplant or a patio piece, make sure to use a plant stand so you can group them in varied heights.

Bedside Buddies: What Every Bed Should Be Accentuated With

Monday, November 21st, 2016

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Skyline Nightstand

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Skyline Nightstand

If the bedroom is supposed to be your sanctuary, then why does it have to come last when it comes to your design considerations? You would be surprised that just a few tweaks could actually make this room more relaxing.

It is crucial to know what elements you need to bring in so that you increase the restful aura in the bedroom. Apart from the bed which is going to be your focal point, you have to know what will make this anchor a more memorable sight to behold.

The Bedside Table: The Necessary Sidekick

First, the bedside table – you must begin with the right height that would serve as a buddy for your bed. This height should be at the same level or height as the top of your mattress. This should offer an even visual line across your bed. This will make it easier to reach for that page-turner at night.

The bottom of the lampshade should be at your shoulder height when you’re lying down so that it will be able to illuminate the book that you’re reading.

There are some people who prefer their bedside tables to be a tad higher. Find a table that’s higher than the mattress when you’re in bed. You can either have the usual table lamps on the nightstands or have some hanging lamps illuminate from above. Just make sure that they don’t create shadows as you do your reading.

Should the traditional bedside table be too large for your bedroom, then you can make use of pedestals or plant stands to fill in that awkward nook.

Keep ‘Em Out of Sight

If you are having trouble finding stuff in the bedroom then why don’t you utilize that nook right next to the bed? Apart from the bedside table, you can also have some open shelves as storage units in that room.

Find a slim shelf if you don’t have the luxury of space and a bigger one if you have ample square footage to boost.

Let It Bloom

Whether you are planning to use a bunch of flowers or just a single-stemmed rose in a slim glass vase, it really doesn’t matter. What truly matters is that you have added a lovely organic touch to this room for rest not to mention an interesting burst of color in a usually dim space.

If flowers aren’t artistic enough for you, then use a pot of succulent or a small work of art.

Play with Shapes, Patterns, Colors and Sizes

You have to be able to create a unique yet balanced display of accessories such as vases, perfume bottles and some trinkets. These come in different shapes and sizes so you have to group them according to their color or shape.

Work in groupings of three if you want to play safe. A stack of books is the perfect group of objects to use if a little height is needed.

It also pays to overlaps some of the items. Don’t think that a lamp partially covering an interesting painting would ruin the view. Sometimes, these seemingly imperfect placements are what would give character to your design.

As to color, make sure that you create a cohesive look using your preferred hues. Find a base color, though, that would serve as the anchor for the rest of the design. The bedding and furniture must coordinate with the rest of the décor.

Personalize It

Include items on your design that have special meaning to you and your family. This can be a framed photograph, a travel memento, or a piece of interesting art. Add some lighted candles and scents to make the room define you.

Winter is just right around the corner. Pretty soon, you will be changing your wardrobe to wools and thicker fabrics. It is just as important to prepare your home for the upcoming winter chill. One of the delightful things about the holiday season is sitting or even curling up in your cozy chair as you sip hot chocolate while reading a bestseller.

Beating the cold temperatures is all about your indulgence with warm hues and cozy textures. You do all these while keeping your interiors still fresh and airy.

If you’re bent on designing around this upcoming season, here are simple tips to get started –

Use Winter Throws

Winter is a great time to pamper yourself using soft and comfortable textiles. Add sheepskin, wool , velvet or faux fur. If you did save up for a seasonal treat, then go ahead and invest in some cashmere throws.

Resist the temptation to leave these winter throws inside the bedroom. Other rooms also need the visual warmth that these throws can provide so spread ‘em out.

Be Sure to Insulate

Insulation isn’t just a fundamental preparation for your safety this coming season. This also crosses to the decorative realm. If you are living in a state that’s extremely cold during winter, then this is something that you should definitely prioritize.

Check all your doors and windows for any leaks. Find out if you need to add some blinds or window drapes in order to reduce heat loss. Your efforts will definitely pay off as you enjoy a warmer winter while your savings pile up on your energy bills.

Hugs and Rugs

Some area rugs are needful this coming season. They won’t just keep your feet warm, they’ll also add character to your home. Find rugs that suit your chosen theme or color scheme. You might also want to rethink your flooring materials since tiles or bare wooden floors are quite unforgiving during winter.

See if you can find Navajo textile area rugs as well as blankets. These will give your home a cozier and warmer feel.

Create Bedroom Layers

You should consider the many ways that you can make the bedroom warmer and fuzzier this winter. Just make sure that you won’t go overboard, though.

Use different layers of bedding such as comforters and quilt. Don’t just limit your winter makeover on the bed, make sure the rest of the bedroom also gets an overhaul.

Add unique lighting then fill the void corner with an exciting accent chair. Having a small bedroom is not such a bad thing after all.

Use Greeneries

A tad of natural beauty brought about by houseplants and flowers are the perfect elements that would balance any seemingly cold look. The snowy world outside could also serve as an inspiration for your indoors. Use an all-white look for the backdrop then find greeneries to complete the style.

The snow white look could easily become a lifeless look if you’re not careful, though. Make sure that you don’t allow it to look too daunting or sterile. Give it a touch of nature by adding birch logs, white corals and pine cones.

Fire Up the Fireplace

What could be more magical than to use the fireplace to think about winter? The fireplace is a must-have during winter as it can fill the room with a different kind of radiance. All your winter décor won’t be as effective if the warmth of the fireplace isn’t felt.

In the absence of a fireplace, don’t fret. You can always rely on the romantic glow of candle lights. The flickering lights are just as dreamy so just set the candles up using lovely candelabra and you’re done.
