Creating the Meditation Nook

Friday, May 25th, 2018

The Bernhardt Interiors Accessories Double Flange 24-in x 24-in LP105 can be your meditation companion.

The power of meditation and its importance in improving one’s life cannot be stressed enough. If this activity is new to you, then you may still be wondering what benefits it can actually offer.  You might wonder how sitting – without making any noise – in one corner can benefit you. If stress is already taking its toll on your life, then it’s time to consider a few minutes of me time.

Meditation is a form of relaxation which can be achieved by joining a class, repeating a certain mantra or proper breathing. The benefits that come with such activities include –

Stress reduction

A stronger immune system

Lower blood pressure

Sleep improvement

And rejuvenation.

Now that you know the importance of meditation, you could try to create a special room or even just a nook in your home where you could go about with your chosen form of meditation.

Find a Relaxing Locale

If you happen to have a beautiful landscape outdoors, then that’s the best spot to be so long that the weather permits. Those lush greens, a patch of flowery plants or a corner with cascading water is simply difficult to beat. But there’s also the slight chance that the room near such areas is already the master bedroom or a dining room.

Should you have a room that does not have this wonderful sight, don’t fret. You can still set up any room with windows (so there’s ample natural light during the morning). You can simply hang a painting or a meditation poster with your mantra on one of the walls. This poster can also depict your ideal greenery.

Keep It Hygienic

Meditation also requires a clean mind so, naturally, the place where you’re supposed to do this activity must also be sanitized.

Another way to keep the room or zone clean is to make sure that natural light hits it during the day. Use sheer curtains if you don’t want to be hit with direct sunlight. If you like meditating in the evening, then you can just install a soft light. Should you prefer softer light, then see how you can install some dimmers.

Be sure to set up a mat so you don’t meditate directly on your floor. Find a yoga mat or have a low-height, comfy mattress. Even a soft throw would do as would a chair that properly supports your back.

Fresh Air Galore

It also helps that the environment is also well-ventilated. It greatly helps if you would feel a cool breeze while you’re meditating. The freshness of the air can also be felt when the room smells nice. You can also choose from various fragrances that are meant to calm the senses (e.g. chamomile, bergamot, jasmine, mandarin, sandalwood, vanilla, lilac, rose, etc.).

Declutter

Try to aim for a wide and open space rather than a tight one. This should give you a more relaxed ambiance. A stuffy room, whether in terms of limited space or having a lot of stuff in there will definitely interfere with the relaxation level that you’re trying to achieve with your meditation.

Another form of decluttering is to keep the mobile devices and any type of device out of your meditation room. This is the time to rejuvenate so don’t spend this getting cranky over your emails, phone calls or text messages.

Play Soft Music

If you’re the type who wants to play some music while meditating, then go for some any kind of relaxing, soft music. Instrumental music has also been observed to enhance the experience of meditation. Otherwise, you could just go ahead and meditate in complete silence.

That’s it. It doesn’t take much to set up your meditation hideout, does it?

Peace is one of the most-planned concepts in many homes yet it is also one of the least achieved. This is lacking in many homes because of several aspects – physical, emotional, even spiritual. Peaceful and meditative homes are not always quiet. A peaceful atmosphere can be established by a few disciplinary and interior design concepts.

Follow Flexible Routines

It is crucial to have a daily or weekly routine. This established routine is the key to keeping your nerves in check. A schedule will also tell you when to accomplish certain tasks. It is important to begin with a flexible routine or you would end up destroying an otherwise peaceful interior design.

Plan Ahead

No goal is achieved without proper planning. If you don’t want to make those cramming, last minute decisions, then you have to write down the elements that will make a room more peaceful.

A huge part of planning also requires house rules. Expectations have to be written down and posted where everyone could see them. The entire family could work together to keep a room more peaceful if they know what are expected of them.

Create Meditative Rooms

Now that you’ve planned and set a few rules and established a routine, it’s time to walk into your home and recognize which room (or rooms) would soon get a heavier door, one that would absorb sound. Create an inspiring atmosphere in the room.

Peace Is Zero Clutter

Clutter is equal to chaos. Clutter leaves you looking for lost stuff and having things that you don’t actually need in your home. Decluttering should be a huge part of your plan, too. You don’t want to end up with bulging closets or piles of papers that you no longer need inside filing cabinets.

It’s time to take the mop, broom and other cleaning aids and tackle the tasks. You would soon discover that clutter had a lot to do with your stressful living.

Decluttering could also mean removing any bad memories from your home. That picture frame hanging on the wall might be your ex’s gift to you. This and other such stuff will only remind you of the pain that could lead to unnecessary stress.

The removal of these bad reminders will bring you a step closer to setting up a meditative space.

Choose Colors Wisely

Colors affect people’s psyche in ways that are difficult to explain. Studies have proven that colors even have the power to alter body temperature as well as appetite. Colors can also affect moods or people’s energy levels.

Now that you know these, find the colors that could help you meditate such as green or pale blue.

Appreciate Nature

Humans have a natural tendency to like and appreciate the beauty of nature. You can, therefore, use natural elements such as potted green plants or a view of the garden outside make your meditative room more relaxing. Apart from greeneries, you can also bring in a wooden bowl as well as a water element fixture.

Positive Atmosphere Only

As you become more aware about the elements that could help you achieve a relaxing space, it is also vital that you learn to control the vibes in that room. You can bring the good vibes in by hanging photos of your family vacations on the wall.

You may also create a slogan that could distinguish that spot from the rest of the rooms in your home. This also means saying no to gadgets and other technological stuff in that room. There must be designated technology zones so that you will have a visual cue that the meditative space remains restful all the time.

One of the most cherished moments in every person’s life is that so-called alone time or me time. Most people nowadays don’t have much time in their hands so they feel that they deserve a quiet moment every now and then. Just as healthy eating and regular exercise are both important for a sound mind; relaxation is just as crucial. Your alone time can help you reflect and meditate so you can rejuvenate your mind for the next days.

Your Private Getaway

Indeed, no man can be truly autonomous. Sure, no man is an island, but creating your own meditation space can nourish deep thinking. It encourages you to think independently at the moment. There are, after all, thought processes that are better carried out when you are on your own.

Your private sanctuary is an amazing place to do that. There is no anxiety there and no desire to feel the companionship of anyone.

Time to Reboot

Always being on the go or being up on your toes can be exhausting. You will eventually come to a point when you’ll feel burnt out.

Taking some time to replenish in a quiet environment should decrease stimulation and stress. Remove any kind of distraction inside this special room (or nook) such as TV or any kind of gadget. Having these interruptions remove will improve the quality of rest that you will get from this private place.

Regenerating your spirit will be easy if you know how to set up your me space. This intimate space should allow you to flush out your mental clutter and even discover answers to certain problems.

Just as you would do in any ritual such as eating, exercising or even bathing, you must take time to regenerate. You need to be in touch with your inner self and this can happen when you physically pull away from the daily grind.

So what sort of interior design elements should you bring into this room? Since it is going to be a sanctuary, make sure that you choose the correct wall color to begin with. Pick from the cool color palettes. Available to use are pastels and other light hues such as powder blue, light green, muted yellow, and light pink. Veer away from glaring colors as these will only stimulate you to be more active rather than restful.

“Me” Space Requirements

Life is already a rollercoaster ride so hold your horses and take the time to bring in some furniture pieces that can help you relax. A recliner could be a great solution for some; most prefer to set up a nook where they could read and ponder over their lives, though. The recliner could evoke sleepiness which is not what you would want during this moment. While you want to be relaxed, you wouldn’t want to fall asleep, though. Your goal is to rejuvenate through correct meditation.

This space can be no more than a nook in your bedroom or any less busy part of your home.

Your me space can also be your reading corner so it can be placed inside a home library or a quiet home office. What every reading corner needs are a small side table (enough to hold a book, lamp, your eyeglasses, and a pen). This lovely table can be matched with an equally lovely chair. For your comfort, you can invest in a cushioned chair so your reading or me moments would become more relaxing.

Lighting is an important element to consider when setting up your me space. Make sure that the light isn’t installed behind you as this will cause shadows to be formed right into that novel that you will peruse later on.

Life can be happy, sad, even challenging most of the time. Now that you have your me space, you can now refuel to take on even the toughest challenges that life would throw your way.
