Designing the Livable Home

Tuesday, September 26th, 2017

What better way is there to personalize your home than to add a beautiful artwork? Featured here is the Uttermost Accessories Coming Home Hand Painted Art 31318.

Have you noticed how spotless most celebrity and designer homes are? Has it ever crossed your mind that these homes may look great but are not exactly the kind of home that you can live in? These thoughts are perfectly normal. After all, we don’t all live a party-every-night kind of lifestyle.

If you want to start designing a home where a family can live comfortably, then you better start from scratch. Whether your family lives in a small apartment, a townhouse, or a bungalow, you have to commit to begin this project at ground zero.

You could also be a family or an individual who still does not own a lot of furnishings so now you’re wondering how to fill up your space with more stuff. It shouldn’t be surprising that you also want all things vintage or old-looking if you grew up in a traditional home. Rather than take furnishings from your parents’ home, why not invest in your own?

Go ahead and buy your own chairs, decorative items, even your kitchen appliances. One paycheck after another, start buying stuff for your home. Call this your furniture budget or furniture fund. Get ideas from magazines but make the projects doable such as turning a sewing machine base turned into a workstation.

For the major furniture, of course, you have to make a careful move before you come up with your final decision. Remember that you will be living with these pieces of furniture for a long time so it is best to invest in just a few pieces. They may be few but they should be durable enough to last for many, many years.

Little by little, you will soon see that you have built a home according to your liking. It is also a space that you worked hard to design as each accessory or furnishing was carefully thought through.

Stack the Books

A great way to personalize and make your space look lived in is to display some book collections. Have your stack of books occupy a special spot in your living area. This could be at the center of your living room. To have this collection turned into your focal point, hang a lovely piece of artwork above the stack.

Allow a few noticeable pieces to mingle with this art and book shrine. Have a lovely wooden chest displayed in the same room with a few sitting pieces. White walls will emphasize this lovely ensemble to be enjoyed by family and friends.

Invest in Art and Heirloom Pieces

You might have come to a point when you also realized that your monthly paycheck is taking you nowhere. Rather than buy designer clothes or bags all the time, as these are dead investments, find some heirloom pieces that you can place inside your livable home.

These pieces would increase in value and could even be passed down from one generation to another. You can also invest in artworks. Again, these can be passed on to your kids and your kids’ kids.

Keep Editing

It also pays to review your interior design from time to time. Always prioritize the basics and learn to declutter. As you do so, you avoid having a place that has a mishmash of design elements. Instead, you’ll have a home that would always look fresh and evolved.

An example of editing is when you place a bench by the window sill one time then placing it at the foot of your bed the next. Always personalize your space by adding stuff that defines you.

Do you love crocheted items? Then display your crocheted item on a table or drape it on your sectional’s backrest.

There are a million ways to keep your habitat looking new and you.

What Constitutes Cozy?

Monday, February 27th, 2017

FFDM’s Avery Queen Metal Canopy Bed spells cozy to a T.

Looking at your home as a mere place to lie down at night isn’t a good thing. Ideally, this should be a getaway, a space where you can let go of your worries and worldly cares. If you would like to spend more time in your home, then you have to exert extra effort in making it look and feel inviting. But what does cozy even mean?

We all need our homes to be the place of refuge. This is supposed to be a space where you can balance yourself and your psyches.

You don’t have to spend too much in creating your cozy living space. Coziness, after all, means arranging all the elements that can make a space appear inviting. Don’t worry about not having a degree in interior design since you can still cozify your home minus that degree.

Begin by Layering

One of the quickest ways to create a warm and inviting space is to layer your furnishings. Use tons of pillows and blankets in the bedrooms.

Layer a couch or bed with comforter and some soft cotton blankets. These are your best defense against the cold. Adding pillows in different sizes and shapes will also accommodate various activities such as napping and reading.

Use Warm Colors

Barbara Jacobs, a professional consultant on hues says room color is usually underestimated. The effects of hues on one’s psyche is both significant and subtle. If you want a quieter environment, then make sure that there are no extremely bright colors around.

Use warmer shades such as yellows, oranges and neutral browns. These are the coziest shades that you can find.

Install Soft Rugs

There are couches that are lovely to sit upon and those that are truly comfortable to sit upon. This means that you have to strike a balance between beauty, functionality and comfort; else, you end up having a couch for display or something that’s too ugly to look at no matter how comfy.

Mix and Experiment

Buy from a reputable furniture shop and look at their wide array of options. For the best offers on sofas, check out our collection here.

Get the pieces that spell I-N-V-I-T-I-N-G. When you consider harmonizing pieces together, think less of matching the pieces but more on which goes with which. Mixing even the most dissimilar pieces brings visual texture which is what makes any space look cozier.

It’s All About Lighting

One of the most significant factors in making a room look comfortable is correct lighting. Lighting makes a huge difference especially in creating a warmer ambience.

Use various light sources, the brighter ones should be used for areas where large gatherings often take place. The lamps and recessed lighting should be placed in areas where more intimate activities take place.

Use cool light bulbs instead of the warm ones. This takes a minimal amount of work but it gives instant cozification.

Display YOU

You need to fill your rooms with things that describe you. Don’t listen to your sister or what your best friend tells you is trendy. Decide what you would want to put in your own space. Also, be sure to put a budget together especially for your renovation project.

Seek the help of a professional designer if needed. It can get confusing, even overwhelming to plan and execute your cozification project.

Consider also the color palette that best describes you. Fabrics will perfectly blend your chosen hue palette so be careful in choosing those.

Always surround yourself with design elements that you truly love. Remember that you don’t have to change yourself just so you can catch up with trends. If you have a substantial collection of books, travel photos or jars, go and display them.

Your home is supposed to be the place where you truly belong so fill it up with the things that pronounces the best of you.

Creating Calm Spaces in Your Home

The world that we now live in is a fast-paced one; because of this, it’s crucial that people slow down, take the time to relax, and unwind. People who are constantly on the go as they attend to their jobs, do grocery shopping and go about with mundane things are the very people that need a place of refuge. The great news is that they don’t have to travel far in order to get their much-needed rest. If all would only know how to set it up, their home could actually be a place of relaxation.

Boosting the Mood in Your Home

Upping the positivity in your home is as easy as choosing the right paint colors. There are just three primary colors to begin with but there are literally millions of mixtures to choose from. Yet if you know which color to look for, it would be easy to find the right texture that should go with it.

The creation of a sanctuary in your home begins with the obvious places – the bedroom and the bathroom. You begin and end your day in these rooms so, before you set out to have them painted in relaxing colors, make sure that you take away the clutter first.

After decluttering, you’re now free to choose from the soothing hues of bedroom palettes. Think of sea-glass green or celestial blue. Any of the two could work as the main color of your walls. If you want something different, mix in a pleasing hue and watch your experiment unfold.

White linens are classic and clean yet colorful pillows would make the bedroom much more interesting. Remember to keep the room clutter-free so that stress relief would be a breeze.

It might come as a challenge to come up with a painting project when it comes to the bathroom that has one tiny window or has none at all. Should this be the case in your home, be sure to look for colors that will lighten the mood up. Choose two to three shades of your favorite hues then use the darkest shade sparingly. The darkest colors should always go at the bottom part of the room then as you work your way up, be sure to have a lighter color. Doing so should open up the room, making it appear expansive and seemingly filled with light.

Take out the stress of choosing paint colors for the bathroom by taking hues from your tiles. You can use the same shade on your cabinet door. Navy blue paired with a lot of white will look highly dashing.

Calm Also Means Homey

If the cool color palettes discussed above don’t seem appealing to you, then it’s time to look into the warmer palette. This set of colors possesses the earthiness and sincerity that you need to achieve a relaxed vibe.

Make the headboard as the focal point in your bedroom by covering it with a textured material or an interesting color.

Make sure to contrast warm hues with a soothing color such as light gray. Use the light color on the three walls accompanying the accent wall or headboard.

Standard Calm Colors

Soothing colors needn’t be limited to wispy hues. Just be extra careful in using bolder hues, though. Use those that are on the cooler side of your color wheel. This means sticking to the ever reliable shades of greens, purples and blues. Pink is also another color that can help bring peace and calm in a room. Feng Shui practitioners use this hue to soothe the energy inside a room.

Of course, you can always hype the palette by adding a small accent of any warm hue such as a dash of yellow green accessory, art or accent area.

Achieving the Restful Bedroom

1586-90266-GLD1 Antoinette King Gilded Upholstered Bed

Who wouldn’t want a restful slumber, right? Just imagine a clutter-free bedroom complete with lavender scent and airy sheets – and you’ve just imagined a heavenly bedroom. There are other things that you need to remember so take out your pen and paper and prepare to write these down –

Find a Nightstand Complete with Storage

A small cabinet or a set of drawers right below the nightstand can keep the bedroom clutter-free. It won’t just store knickknacks, it will also keep them out of your sight. Use this same nightstand to keep a journal, pens, books, a lip balm, reading glasses, and other vital stuff.

Nightstand Stuff

You also need to know what things you should keep on (and in) your nightstand. Here are some of the bedtime stuff that you need to keep close –

  • A reading material (a book or a magazine)
  • A vase of fresh flowers
  • An unlit lavender candle (lavender is a relaxing scent although you may also choose from other scents)
  • A cup of tea

Comfort Is Number One

More often than not, people fuss too much about the overall look of their bedroom. What they forget in the process is that they should be more concerned about comfort.

So what makes sleep more restful?

When picking your bedding, make sure that it is soft to the touch. Imagine thick, cotton sheets plus cashmere throws – they’re a sublime combination. Always look for sheets that have breathable fibers.

Synthetics won’t allow the skin to breathe. This does not mean that the higher thread count automatically means having higher quality. Let your fingers do their job – so go ahead and feel the bed sheets. If you have time, read reviews about these sheets. These will give you an idea about the kind of sheet that you are going to invest in.

Linen is a great fabric to use during the summer. It will also last for a very long time if you take good care of it. Crisp sheets are best embodied by cotton percale. This is a classic kind of fabric that is smooth to the touch and will also perform well even in warm weather. Cotton sateen is also smooth and soft to the touch though it is not the best warm weather sheet to use.

Acquire Some Bedtime Rituals

Here are some rituals that work for many people. Doing these before going to bed will surely give you the reward that you want – a restful sleep –

  • Drink a cup of chamomile tea.
  • Read a relaxing book (a collection of poems is most preferable).
  • Lower the lights in a gradual manner especially during the last hour before your bedtime. You can end the night by blowing a candle out.
  • Take a relaxing bath with rose oil or lavender.
  • Spray some lavender scent onto your pillows and sheets.
  • Listen to relaxing music before you drift off.

To Carpet or Not?

Having plush carpet underfoot can make a room more relaxing. This is especially wonderful to feel when you wake up and get out of bed in the morning. Quality carpeting can muffle sounds that can deter a restful mood.

No TV

Rethink whether you would bring in the television inside the bedroom. Blue light is constantly emitted by TV and it can make sleep a lot more difficult to achieve. Keep devices out of the bedroom. Instead of watching TV, commit to reading a good book (the traditional paperback not an eBook) before going to bed.

A Clutter-Free Room

Make good use of bins, baskets and wall hooks. Keep your jewelry, laundry, spare linens, and accessories stacked or stored out of sight. French market baskets are a great stash item for knickknacks.

If you can, make the bedroom a no-shoe zone.

You and Your “Me” Space

FFDM’s Brentwood Collection depicted here the perfect relaxation/reading nook inside a typical bedroom.

One of the most cherished moments in every person’s life is that so-called alone time or me time. Most people nowadays don’t have much time in their hands so they feel that they deserve a quiet moment every now and then. Just as healthy eating and regular exercise are both important for a sound mind; relaxation is just as crucial. Your alone time can help you reflect and meditate so you can rejuvenate your mind for the next days.

Your Private Getaway

Indeed, no man can be truly autonomous. Sure, no man is an island, but creating your own meditation space can nourish deep thinking. It encourages you to think independently at the moment. There are, after all, thought processes that are better carried out when you are on your own.

Your private sanctuary is an amazing place to do that. There is no anxiety there and no desire to feel the companionship of anyone.

Time to Reboot

Always being on the go or being up on your toes can be exhausting. You will eventually come to a point when you’ll feel burnt out.

Taking some time to replenish in a quiet environment should decrease stimulation and stress. Remove any kind of distraction inside this special room (or nook) such as TV or any kind of gadget. Having these interruptions remove will improve the quality of rest that you will get from this private place.

Regenerating your spirit will be easy if you know how to set up your me space. This intimate space should allow you to flush out your mental clutter and even discover answers to certain problems.

Just as you would do in any ritual such as eating, exercising or even bathing, you must take time to regenerate. You need to be in touch with your inner self and this can happen when you physically pull away from the daily grind.

So what sort of interior design elements should you bring into this room? Since it is going to be a sanctuary, make sure that you choose the correct wall color to begin with. Pick from the cool color palettes. Available to use are pastels and other light hues such as powder blue, light green, muted yellow, and light pink. Veer away from glaring colors as these will only stimulate you to be more active rather than restful.

“Me” Space Requirements

Life is already a rollercoaster ride so hold your horses and take the time to bring in some furniture pieces that can help you relax. A recliner could be a great solution for some; most prefer to set up a nook where they could read and ponder over their lives, though. The recliner could evoke sleepiness which is not what you would want during this moment. While you want to be relaxed, you wouldn’t want to fall asleep, though. Your goal is to rejuvenate through correct meditation.

This space can be no more than a nook in your bedroom or any less busy part of your home.

Your me space can also be your reading corner so it can be placed inside a home library or a quiet home office. What every reading corner needs are a small side table (enough to hold a book, lamp, your eyeglasses, and a pen). This lovely table can be matched with an equally lovely chair. For your comfort, you can invest in a cushioned chair so your reading or me moments would become more relaxing.

Lighting is an important element to consider when setting up your me space. Make sure that the light isn’t installed behind you as this will cause shadows to be formed right into that novel that you will peruse later on.

Life can be happy, sad, even challenging most of the time. Now that you have your me space, you can now refuel to take on even the toughest challenges that life would throw your way.
