Sleep Well: How Many Pillows Should You Have In Bed?

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2017

The iComfort® by Serta Accessories Contour Pillow is ergonomically contoured to support both your head and neck.

If you’re having a hard time sleeping at night, it could be because you suspect that you have an insomnia or you simply feel uncomfortable. Most of the time, the problem is as simple as not having ample pillows. A lot of people take these for granted but even if this is the case, they remain to make a huge difference between a restful sleep from one that makes you toss and turn.

Pillows: The Necessary Amount

If you want to achieve healthy sleep, then you need to know that there should be enough pillows for you to remove that angle between your head and shoulder. This varies with every individual and it might take a few experimentations before you even get it right. After all, the level of comfort for one person may not necessarily be the same with the next one.

There are people who are comfortable sleeping even with just one pillow. For you, that might not be the case. Others sleep with large, fluffy pillows; others want the firmer types.

Statistically speaking, here are the numbers of pillows that are widely used –

  • A single pillow for your head
  • A pair of pillows where one goes to the head and the other is hugged
  • A pair where one is for the head while the other is for the feet
  • Three pillows; one for your head, another for your feet and one to support your calves.

A Single Pillow + One or More

Sleeping with just one pillow is a straightforward approach to sleeping. All you need to do is place it under your head, close your eyes, and that’s it.

If you are going to use more than one pillow, just make sure that your neck won’t stay at an angle that is uncomfortable for you. Remember also that using more than one pillow is not a guarantee that you will be sleeping comfortably.

Sleeping with a pair of pillows means you have more pieces to arrange when you sleep at night and when you wake up in the morning. Speaking of having two pillows, never make the mistake of stacking both under your head. This will raise your neck at an odd angle which will cause a stiff neck. If you want a fluffier head pillow, then just use a larger, single pillow.

If you’re a side sleeper, be sure to flank a pillow with your legs. This will provide extra support. If you sleep on your stomach, then be sure to place a pillow right below your hips instead of your head. This is not a healthy sleeping position, though, as it is known to induce a lot of body aches.

Spine Health and Your Pillow

The support of ample pillows is crucial for spinal disorders. The right kind of pillow support can make the problematic spine rest more comfortably. Know that restorative sleep is your body’s chance at healing.

There are different kinds of pillow fillings that also offer different levels of support. An orthopedic, roll-shaped type that is filled with polypropylene capsules is best for spinal alignment. The worst kind of pillow for people with spinal issues is the feather-filled type (100-percent goose down).

The spine is so sensitive and it is always connected to the neck, so, the curving or angle where your neck rests at can make a huge difference on your spine’s alignment. The human neck is slightly curved forward. This is crucial so that the weight of the head is supported and so we can stay upright.

Having a pillow that’s too high could bend the neck abnormally. This could also place the air pipe at a narrow angle, thus, obstructing your breathing. Having a low pillow height, on the other hand, could lead to strained neck muscles.

So go ahead and experiment on the correct height of your pillows.

Did you know that you spend a third of your life in bed? This is why you should be concerned about sleep quality as it is a huge part of your life. Uninterrupted sleep is one of the best feelings in the world. That feeling of being able to sink into a comfortable, restful bed and be able to sleep the whole night through is just amazing.  Conversely, if you don’t sleep too well, you end up feeling cranky and with a shorter attention span. To achieve quality slumber, you need bedding essentials such as mattress toppers, duvets, mattress and pillow protectors, the right pillow support, etc.

Hotel Look with Duvets

Do you remember how restful your nights have been when you checked into some fancy hotel? Those duvets and layered pillows proved how stylish and chic your bedroom can be.

Choosing the right duvet for the bed and bed linen is a crucial decision that you have to make. You don’t want to be stuck with a duvet that’s a size down. Duvet that’s a size up, however, is the fancy solution to having a cozy night with your loved one.

Children might prefer to have the lighter kind of duvet especially when you’ll be using them on single or double beds. Quilts can be a great way to show off their fave TV or movie characters.

Choose from single, double, king size or super king size duvets.

Pillows, Mattress and Your Sleeping Position

You need to know what pillow type would best suit your sleeping position. This is important in picking your preferred mattress tension, too. Quality pillows might not last as long as your quality mattress but they can significantly reduce neck, shoulder and back pains.

People who sleep on their backs should pick a medium-firm pillow. For side sleepers, it is best to pick a pillow or two which are thicker than the common pillow. This is highly recommended for better neck support.

The softer option is best for the front sleepers.

It is best to have your pillows replaced every two years. It becomes doubly important to do so if the pillows are already discolored or lumpy. Disfigured or damaged pillows no longer provide the necessary neck support and they could also contain high levels of epithelial, dust mites and other allergens.

If you want to get the best out of your pillows and mattress, then it is worth considering that you invest in quality protectors for both. Mattress and pillow protectors keep your mattresses and pillows from being soiled or worn out. Protectors will also keep these bedding essentials clean while providing a different level of coziness.

There are now beds that already include mattress toppers. There are different materials to choose from – there’s polyester fiber, feathers, latex or Visco-elastic.

There are also pillow fillings for you to choose from. Just like mattresses, pillows also have natural as well as synthetic fillings. Whether you have memory foam or the hollow fiber type, your pillow choice must always ensure a restful night’s sleep.

Synthetic pillows can be made from Visco-elastic, latex, or polyurethane fillings. There are also pillows that have combinations of these fillings. People who have asthma should choose synthetic pillows since they contain latex foam which doesn’t gather dust.

For people who experience aches and pains while sleeping, there is that quality Visco-elastic filling. This is especially designed to relieve neck and head pressure. This ensures optimum sleeping position for chronic pain sufferers.

Pillows with natural fillings contain duck down, goose down, or both. The more feathers these pillows contain, then the firmer they are. As for your mattress, it is highly recommended that you find quality pillow protectors so that everything would be fresh and clean to your touch.

Accent Pillow That’s So You

Many designers are being asked how they go about in their selection of finishing touches for spaces that they work on. Seemingly unimportant stuff such as window treatments, rugs and decorative accessories can make or break the entire design. Pillows, in particular, are a bit overwhelming to shop for. After all, there are just so many materials, sizes, patterns and colors to pick from. If you’re uncertain about which accent pillow to get for your home, here’s what you should do –

Consider the Price

This is a basic advice when it comes to projects that you need to tackle. One of the first things that you should look into is the amount of money needed to get the pillows that would work for you. Decorative pillows differ greatly in cost, from just a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. The luxuriousness of the fabric can also make a huge difference on the price.

See also how many pillows you would need and what your ceiling is with regard to your finance. Achieve to have one or two pillows for every chair and about three to five for the sofa.

Check the Material

If you still have young children in your family or if you are taking care of pets, then you should avoid accent pillows that are made of silk, velvet and other hard-to-clean materials. If this is the case in your home, then be sure to find outdoor-grade fabrics. These are easier to clean and are proven to be more durable.

Look at the label on the pillows and find out if they are for dry-cleaning or just washable. A pillow could be machine-washed but it is still best to spot clean it most of the time. This would avoid wearing and tearing which repeated machine washing could cause.

Check the Size

Decorative pillow sizes usually range from 14 to 20 inches square. The rectangular ones measure at 12’x16’ to 16’x26’. See if you prefer to mix and match the different shapes and sizes that are available to you. Modern look means you should use uniform size, color and shape. The more traditional vibe requires an assortment of sizes, colors and shapes.

Find the Best Color and Pattern

This is the fun part of shopping for accent pillows. Find pillow patterns and colors according to these five approaches –

Warm palette

Cool palette

Neutral palette

Neutral with a twist and

Mixed or colorful

Pick the color or pattern according to the existing furnishings in your home. If this is a remodel or the creation of a first-time interior design, then base your choice according to your taste. There are two items from which you can launch – your preference or the existing color palette or theme.

Are You Cool or Warm?

Another common advice in determining your preferred color is to look at your closet contents. If most of the stuff there are in blue, green, gray or purple, then you are a huge fan of cool colors. This is also the case if your wall color, flooring and furniture come in the same hues.

People who live in hotter climates tend to lean towards the warmer hues such as orange, brown, red or yellow.

Narrowing down your color choice will help you decide on the kind of accent pillow that you will eventually purchase. So go ahead, don’t be afraid to experiment on the patterns, textures and colors.

If none of these work, then it’s safe to go to the neutral palette of whites, beige, and creams.

Add a Little Twist

Use your neutral base then add some drama and boldness. An interesting palette can be a mixture of cool and warm colors. Patterned decorative pillows will look great when paired with a neutral seating unit and vice versa.

Making Room for Guests: The Creation of a Special Area for Visitors

Hooker Furniture Bedroom True Vintage King Upholstered Panel Bed. What good is a guest room without a restful bed, right?

Hooker Furniture Bedroom True Vintage King Upholstered Panel Bed. What good is a guest room without a restful bed, right?

There are expected and unexpected guests in any home, every now and then. Whether you would have the former or the latter, wouldn’t it be great if you are always prepared to welcome them in? Whether they intend to stay just for the night or over the weekend, these guests need to feel well-cared for. They may be away from their homes but don’t you agree that they also deserve a nice place where they could rest and have a little privacy?

So what should you put in the guest room? And another question is – should there be a designated room for the guests or should a partitioned area do?

Creating a Happy Place

It is crucial to make your guests feel welcome not just so they won’t rant about their inhospitable experience but more because you would want them to feel at home even when they are away from their own home. And what better way is there to create a happy place for them than to set up a room – or even a section – of your home that feels just like home?

The Pillow Haven

Oh, what would anyone give for a bed full of fluffy pillows? Say your guest room is small, then compensate for the absence of a reading nook by adding a lot of pillows. These can be used as makeshift couch in the morning, one where a guest could curl while reading an engaging novel.

Don’t forget to place extra pillows on the bed as some people prefer to prop up and do their readings before snoozing.

The Guest Tray

Placing a tray inside the room signifies that the items placed there are intended for guest use. These items are often not regular parts of the room. Have the tray placed right next to the bed so that the guest can place her jewelry there. The tray can also hold the toiletries in the guest bathroom and yet another tray can be used to put any other stuff that your guest might want to park for quite a bit.

The Universal Charger

While, yes, it may be your guest’s responsibility to bring her tablet or smart phone charger with her, there are moments when forgetfulness happens. So just to make the guest’s stay a lot more comfortable and stress-free, you might as well have a universal charger brought into the guest room. Find one that can be used for cell phones, laptops, eReaders, etc.

Yes, a Steamer, Too

Who wouldn’t want to have crisp, clean clothes to wear? There is a reason why the hospitality industry includes an iron or a steamer inside every hotel room so that guests get to iron their creased clothing. You might have experienced it, too, when you have to iron your clothes prior to a business meeting. Weren’t you thankful that a flat iron was available because your dress was wrinkled in transit?

A steamer would do, so you don’t have to worry about having an ironing board brought in.

Books for Late-night Reads

The guests also need to wind down and a good way to help them do this is to have a stack of magazines, novels or self-help books on the nightstand. You wouldn’t want to have an entire bookcase brought in, though, as this could ruin the restful feel that you are also trying to achieve inside the room. Remember that you are setting up a guest room and not the home library so, yup, take it easy in having books brought in.

An Extra Blanket Please

One of the most neglected extras in guest rooms is the extra blanket. Apart from the towels, toiletries, and other necessities, never forget to leave an extra blanket for your guest. Take time to invest in a softer brand, your guests will surely appreciate you for it.

This classic wooden bed comes from FFDM’s Highlands Collection

Do you believe that the bedroom is a sacred place? This is the very place where you sleep, relax, dream, and fantasize even. This can be a room that you have all for yourself or you might be sharing it with someone who you care for. While this room deserves privacy or even if it is dark and tiny, it need never be depressing.

Sprucing up your bedroom shouldn’t be complex. Here are a few tips –

Find Cozy Bedding

What could be more relaxing than climbing onto a comfy bed with luxurious bedding? Find pillowcases and bed sheets that make you want to go to bed each night. If moon and constellation, dots and stripes make the kids marvel at night, then have their bedding designs come in these patterns.

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Sunset Point King Fretwork Panel Bed fits perfectly in shabby chic, seaside or lakeside homes. This bedroom focal piece comes in cathedral white oak veneers.

Do you have a duvet that you want covered? It wouldn’t be wrong to experiment with some colors. If you want to splurge on your linen sheets then go silk! Silk pillowcases – would you believe – can make you a lot prettier in the morning? It may be myth for others but sleeping soundly through the night speeds up rejuvenation, hence, you look fresher when you wake up.

Let There Be Light

There are many different ways that you can bring in light into the bedroom. You can begin by hanging mirrors or by replacing the doors of sliding closets with mirrored ones. These should bounce the light throughout the room, making it a lot brighter than it really is.

Creating a fancy bedroom can also be as easy as installing lighting fixtures with Swarovski crystals. These will be the perfect rainbow projectors for your private space. You will be amazed at how the lovely rainbows will dance around your room.

‘Not a huge fan of rainbows? Then try to project stars on your ceiling instead. Salt lamps can also emit lovely light during the night. The salt is also good for your health as it clears away air-borne allergens such as pet dander, smoke or pollen.

Clean Up

You bedroom should not just look fantastic but also smell fantastic. It would be wrong for this room to smell musty. So it wouldn’t hurt to plug in that vacuum cleaner and to set up some scented candles. Some homeowners prefer oil burners to scented candles. Still others want those essential oils in humidifiers. Whichever way you choose to make your bedroom sweet-smelling, it really doesn’t matter. The bottom line is, you can sleep better if you clean up.

Sparkle Up

If you want your bedroom to become more cheerful, then add some sparkles. This could be as easy as having a candle light reflected on your bedroom mirror. It can also be more elaborate such as adding crystal or glass chandelier.

‘Want it to be sassier? Then go bigger by adding curtains beaded with crystals in each window. Have the headboard decorated with crystal beads, drape a Moroccan wedding blanket at the foot of your bed, or just hang a mirror ball right above your bed.

A Standout Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is probably the most intimate area in your home. This is where you can express your creativity, style and your personality. Bedrooms are now a lot more than places for getting dressed or sleeping.

Expand the range of use for this room by adding an expansive closet space, a reading nook, or a private office. Adding features such as a fireplace will make a world of difference in terms of upping the air of romance. The fire screen can accentuate the fireplace, making the bedroom a lot more calming and interesting – perfect for a room meant for relaxation.
