The bedroom is that spot where you’re supposed to unwind after a long day at work or in school. But if this space has become more of a stress than a place of relaxation lately, then it’s high time to set it up for an upgrade. Welcome to your master bedroom decorating guide.
Not a lot of people spend a lot of time decorating their bedrooms. These are rooms, after all, that are not seen by visitors, hence, they often end up neglecting them.
Rest and Relax
Okay, in creating a more restful master bedroom, you have to go back to the basics. Ask yourself – what is this room for?
Of course to rest and relax! Since this is supposed to be a place for a retreat, you have to bring in the elements that make it so. Jars and baskets of essential oils, soaps, bubble baths, etc.
Create an Accent Wall
The accent wall is that differently-colored wall in a space. This is an effective way to liven up space, though, you have to be extra careful in choosing the color that you paint it with. If you’re gearing to have a warm color, then use shades of red, orange or yellow. These colors tend to pull the beholder’s eyes towards that accent wall.
A perfect wall to use a warm accent color on is that long, narrow bedroom wall. Painting this space offers a more balanced look.
As for the cool color enthusiasts, you should look into blues, greens, and the lighter tints of purple. These tend to pull the away the attention, thus, making a room appear larger. When you use a cool color as an accent wall in a small bedroom, then you make it appear larger. This cool color will also give the impression that you actually have a higher ceiling.
Using a bedroom accent wall is also being ready to define the visual temperature in your room of relaxation. The east or north facing bedroom should use warm hues since they tend to appear cooler. As for the south or west facing rooms, these should be painted with a cool hue in order to lower the visual temperature.
Install an Accent Rug
So now, how do you choose the area rug that will help define your bedroom? The general rules are simple –
- First, the area rug must not touch any of the bedroom walls. Leave five inches between the area rug’s edges from the wall.
- An area rug must never push against any of the large pieces of furniture inside the bedroom such as the bed, the wardrobe or a drawer.
- If you have to choose an area rug for a tiny bedroom, then don’t go shopping for an equally tiny one. Instead, find a large area rug that will almost fill up the space leaving just a few inches that are bare.
- The area rug must not be at a location where the bedroom door swings. If there’s no way around it, then the bedroom door should be high enough to not drag the rug.
Add ‘Em Candles
Don’t forget to bring in those romantic candles. What could be more relaxing than to look at these flickering lights once you dim the other lights?
The candles are a wonderful addition because of their aromatic benefits. The most relaxing fragrances include vanilla, lavender, and chamomile.
Create a Gallery Wall
The gallery wall is often set up in a living room but never in a bedroom. Why not create one in the master bedroom for a change?
Choose artwork, photos or abstract pieces which you can gather to create that master bedroom gallery wall.

Do you believe that the bedroom is a sacred place? This is the very place where you sleep, relax, dream, and fantasize even. This can be a room that you have all for yourself or you might be sharing it with someone who you care for. While this room deserves privacy or even if it is dark and tiny, it need never be depressing.
Sprucing up your bedroom shouldn’t be complex. Here are a few tips –
Find Cozy Bedding
What could be more relaxing than climbing onto a comfy bed with luxurious bedding? Find pillowcases and bed sheets that make you want to go to bed each night. If moon and constellation, dots and stripes make the kids marvel at night, then have their bedding designs come in these patterns.

Do you have a duvet that you want covered? It wouldn’t be wrong to experiment with some colors. If you want to splurge on your linen sheets then go silk! Silk pillowcases – would you believe – can make you a lot prettier in the morning? It may be myth for others but sleeping soundly through the night speeds up rejuvenation, hence, you look fresher when you wake up.
Let There Be Light
There are many different ways that you can bring in light into the bedroom. You can begin by hanging mirrors or by replacing the doors of sliding closets with mirrored ones. These should bounce the light throughout the room, making it a lot brighter than it really is.
Creating a fancy bedroom can also be as easy as installing lighting fixtures with Swarovski crystals. These will be the perfect rainbow projectors for your private space. You will be amazed at how the lovely rainbows will dance around your room.
‘Not a huge fan of rainbows? Then try to project stars on your ceiling instead. Salt lamps can also emit lovely light during the night. The salt is also good for your health as it clears away air-borne allergens such as pet dander, smoke or pollen.
Clean Up
You bedroom should not just look fantastic but also smell fantastic. It would be wrong for this room to smell musty. So it wouldn’t hurt to plug in that vacuum cleaner and to set up some scented candles. Some homeowners prefer oil burners to scented candles. Still others want those essential oils in humidifiers. Whichever way you choose to make your bedroom sweet-smelling, it really doesn’t matter. The bottom line is, you can sleep better if you clean up.

Sparkle Up
If you want your bedroom to become more cheerful, then add some sparkles. This could be as easy as having a candle light reflected on your bedroom mirror. It can also be more elaborate such as adding crystal or glass chandelier.
‘Want it to be sassier? Then go bigger by adding curtains beaded with crystals in each window. Have the headboard decorated with crystal beads, drape a Moroccan wedding blanket at the foot of your bed, or just hang a mirror ball right above your bed.
A Standout Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is probably the most intimate area in your home. This is where you can express your creativity, style and your personality. Bedrooms are now a lot more than places for getting dressed or sleeping.
Expand the range of use for this room by adding an expansive closet space, a reading nook, or a private office. Adding features such as a fireplace will make a world of difference in terms of upping the air of romance. The fire screen can accentuate the fireplace, making the bedroom a lot more calming and interesting – perfect for a room meant for relaxation.
