The Hows of Adding Color to a Home

Friday, September 21st, 2018

This charming red Canadel Dining Room Buffet will surely give the needed dose of color in your dining room.

Would you want to add colors to your home but aren’t ready to commit to something more permanent? There is no need to paint your whole home if all that your design requires at the moment is a punch of color. Check out these ways that you can add awesome hues to your home –

Cool Is the Way to Go

When you’re using colors in an expansive space, be ready to tone down the brightness if you want to achieve a welcoming effect. Bold colors naturally add energy while the muted hues create a more restful mood.

Define the Focal Point

If you want to create an eye-catching feature in your home, then be ready to use patterns with colors. That one room which successfully combines both will surely stand out. This room can become the focal point of your home.

You can mix patterns and sizes in different rooms as well. Add bright hues for that added drama.

A Color That You Love

When picking a color for the walls and accessories, make sure that you pick that one hue that makes your heart flutter. This is that one hue that you surely can live with for quite some time. Millwork and tiles are quite permanent so never base their colors on mere trends that can pass in just a year or two.

Begin Small

You might feel uncertain when you’re veering away from beiges and grays. Start slow and small. Use colors on your accessories at first. Avoid being shocked when you suddenly splash colors into your home.

A colored area rug is a good start. This can even be changed as the seasons change. And don’t think that you have to keep matching the colors. Don’t be afraid to experiment with hues that do not appear to be related to each other. Break the rules at times but don’t go wild that you will wake up with a huge regret.

Another simple way to begin is to bring in flowers. You will immediately notice the difference when you bring in these colorful beauties.

Fabrics can also help you change the colors while not committing. The slipcover can bring the needed color or the accent pillows can show the difference. If you’re feeling more artistic at the moment, you can also use wall decals, framed textiles, black and white photographs or paintings from budding artists.

Window treatments are just like artworks. You have a bazillion options to choose from plus they provide the needed color and pattern for your space.

‘Talk of adding color and patterns, have you heard of adding ribbons to specific areas in your home? Add them onto your window treatments, lampshades, picture frames, cabinet doors, and just about anywhere that needs an extra dash of color.

Accessorize with a throw, vase, accent pillows or even a bowl of fresh fruits. These extras will give an extra mile in terms of providing shots of color and personality.

Limited Contrast

When you’ve decided to use a bold color, it is crucial that you keep the rest of the palette to a bare minimum. Just go for neutrals as you proceed with your design.

When you want to create fun in a space, don’t be afraid to use the colors on opposite sides of a color wheel.

Color is also that powerful element that you can use to brighten up a stark white space. While white rooms are in these holidays, still, the reality is that you can have more fun if bursts of color can be seen from time to time. That dose of color won’t hurt if you want to set up a clean, modern look.

The Fall Getaway – How to Create a Warm and Welcoming Habitat

Thursday, September 20th, 2018

Flexsteel Living Room Fabric Left Arm Facing Sofa Without Nailhead Trim: Seating units are essential in welcoming your holiday guests.

Fall and winter seasons are here and their requirement is this – a cozy and warm home. You are sure to notice a lot of dark brown paneling in interior design magazines. These may be coupled with the caramel-colored seats and textured carpet. All these elements are the hottest features that are calling for attention as of late. So, are you ready to create the fall getaway?

The First Step Is the Doorstep

Do you believe that first impressions are lasting? Nothing can leave a more lasting impact than that place where your guests first enter. Create an entrance that will welcome your guests with a bang.

Tidy up and hang a wreath. Bring in some potted planted and greet your guests with these greens. Set up a welcoming doormat that represents your flamboyant personality as well as the festivities that you are willingly sharing with them.

Create a Sociable Atmosphere

Now it’s time to create a space where the people will gather. Be sure to put a lot of seating units for your guests. As for all the unnecessary furniture, have those hidden away at the back of the room. Have some space in the hall for boots and other shoes.

Have some outdoor seating set up as well. This is for when the weather is good and you’d like to share an evening get-together with your friends and loved ones. Go the extra mile by setting up a dining table on your deck.

Have A Kids’ Area

Family gatherings entail work. So, you wouldn’t want to have additional stress when the kids get in the way. Plan an area where the kids can play safely with their toys or watch the DVD. Setting up their own spot will keep your young ones busy while you’re also busy entertaining the guests.

Cool It

With a lot of extra bodies cramped in a room, it can get pretty hot and with the heater turned up due to the snowy weather, it’s time to bring the temperature down a bit. With the heaters turned down, allow the temperature to cool before you even begin welcoming your guests.

Fall Décor

Now let’s decorate. Warm metals are very, very, very hot at the moment. So, nod your head to bronze, copper, rose gold or brass. These metals can add to the warmth of your space. Just imagine hanging copper pots on the kitchen walls. These display pieces will surely be discussed by your guests, also, they’ll make your kitchen extra special.

If the copper pots need polishing, then just sprinkle a little salt on their surface then rub. Use lemon when you rub the pot surfaces. There is also copper colored paint in spray cans if you want to transform the pieces.

In creating depth and dimension to any space, you can also have a textured wallpaper to evoke sophistication and drama. Eyes are naturally drawn to this kind of wall element. If you don’t want the whole wall to be covered with this new piece, then just have some stencils.

Do you need more ideas to warm your home? Add glowing lights that will bounce off the metallic surfaces. Pair these with spot lights which fill up the cabinets with glass fronts. Just make sure that you have control of all of these lights, meaning, you can brighten or dim them according to your needs.

Using wood is also a traditional way to design a home for fall. Wood floors are as classic as you could get. If you want to create a bold statement, then have a wall-to-wall wood panel. With all these woods welcoming your guests, what else could be more welcoming?

Art Deco for Fall: The Perfect Style for the Season

Thursday, September 20th, 2018

Marge Carson Living Room Bolero Console

Just like its relative, Art Nouveau, Art Deco has affected many industries. One of the areas that it has had a relevant effect is in the decorative arts as well as fashion, car styles and architecture. This style is known to be elegant, glamorous, modern, yet also functional.

The Resilience of Art Deco

Art Deco successfully survived the periods of Depression in the 1930s. It also managed to come out from the ‘40s and the ‘50s until it finally bowed out to make way for the Mid-century modern design. Despite all these, Art Deco is slowly making a comeback.

Period pieces are finding their way to many homes. Have you seen the style of the homes in The Great Gatsby? Then you just caught a glimpse of the perfectionist style that is Art Deco.

It’s About Being Bold

Interior decoration, just like architecture, has been a good home for Art Deco. It has all been about making a statement. So, if you love geometric patterns complete with edgy angles, and if you like symmetry rather than organized chaos, then this should be your go to style.

Art Deco-inspired homes also use generous amounts of steel and gold. It’s impossible not to think of wealth when creating an Art Deco zone.

Art Deco is as exotic as you could go. Use angular and linear forms. Say no to fussiness or the romantic elements. Use a lot of mirrors, stainless steel, lacquer, chrome, glass, inlaid wood, and even exotic animal skins such as zebra and shark.

Are you looking for elements that can become the motivation for your Art Deco home? Elements that are typically seen are trapezoids, nudes, branches, leaves, feathers, zigzags, chevron, sunbursts, and jagged edges as is seen with the Chrysler Building.

Let’s Decorate

Okay, so you’ve finally chosen Art Deco as your official style. What should you do now?

Begin with contrasts. Art Deco is also about creating contrasts. Use deep yellows, blues, reds, greens or pinks with black, silver or chrome. Those who prefer to have a softer version of this design would do well to use beiges or creams. These hues beautifully contrast with a lacquered finish or with polished wood.

Now it’s time to pick your furniture. Go for the strong and streamlined pieces. Say no to frills and small pieces. Nod instead to exotic woods, big pieces like armoires, sideboards, etc. Find those that are typical of the past decades when Art Deco flourished.

Lacquered furniture pieces are also a staple in many Art Deco homes. These are attention-grabbing elements that can help spice up the already interesting palette of an Art Deco abode.

As for your fabric choice, don’t go for florals or plaids. The Art Deco room thrives in geometric or solid designs. Add a punch by highlighting the room with cushions. Again, the keyword here is bold.

When it comes to lighting, use a lot of chrome and glass. Have the glass enameled or etched. Tiffany-style is also quite common. Be sure to evoke elegance. Sunburst pattern is a widespread Art Deco motif. Be sassy and stand out by glamming up your home with evocative lighting.

When you’re done designing the top to middle part of your home, then it’s time to look down and see how to beautify your Art Deco flooring. Find black and white tiles or set up a lacquered floor. Abstract designs are also an amazing option.

Go ahead and shine. Let the floors do the talking. Use polished wood or any such material that offers a gleaming effect. Anything that looks timeless and sophisticated (picture a Chanel outfit in all its glory) is acceptable in an Art Deco setting.

Dark vs. Light Wood Flooring: Seeing the Pros and Cons

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018

Here is proof that light-colored flooring also works with light-colored furnishings. Featured furniture is the Rae Upholstered Queen Bed from Fine Furniture Design’s Brentwood Collection.

Every homeowner can surely attest that out of the many considerations and decisions that they have to make when designing a space, the wood finish is one huge decision that needs ample attention. Apart from the various wood types, they also have to consider which colors will work best with their chosen design.

Picking light or dark wood will hugely affect the vibes that will be felt in the space. For instance, you wouldn’t want black walls to be paired with equally dark hardwood furnishings and hardwood flooring. Light-colored woods offer a cottage feel but there is no one-size-fits-all type of hardwood flooring for homes. There are people who prefer to use light woods and some who embrace the beauty of dark ones.

Here are a few questions that you might want to answer before you pick the flooring material. –

  • First, which color do you really prefer?
  • What style have you chosen for your home? What decorative elements have you already used?
  • Do you have a lot of high traffic areas? Do you have kids or pets?
  • What sizes do the rooms come in?
  • How meticulous are you in terms of seeing dirt?
  • What flooring type goes best with your current furniture?

What’s in Style?

What hardwood color is currently in style? Or would you prefer to have the classic look? In the NYC metro area, what’s hot is dark hardwood flooring. Light floors with no stain come in next.

While dark flooring is in, this does not mean right away that this should become your choice, too. There are advantages and disadvantages that come with each flooring type.

Is It Easy to Clean?

Light flooring shows less dirt than darker hardwood floors. If you like dark woods, then just go for the ones that have a lighter tone. Instead of ebony, you can just go for Jacobean. Pick a satin finish if you find style as your motivation in setting up a flooring.

Of course, you can also choose to just leave the shoes by the door. Doing so will even help preserve the hardwood floors.

As for dents and scratches, know that all hardwoods can show these. Darker types, though, tend to show the scratches more.

Screen then recoat every three to four years. This is an extra poly which will help them last longer.

And here’s where dark-colored flooring becomes the canvas for the equally dark furniture but light-colored walls.

Furniture Choice

Hardwood flooring materials that come with a light finish include ash, oak, maple and hickory. These can go well with almost anything. If you have this type of flooring in your kitchen, then you’ll have to be extra careful with stains and damages. Also, make sure that you use dark-colored cabinets to go with them.

When you chose to install dark hardwood flooring, then you can go both ways. You could either match the darkness of the floor or have the furnishings come a few shades lighter.

Which Creates the Illusion of Space?

If you want to create the illusion of space, then go for the lighter tones. This is especially when you’re designing a small home. Dark flooring can cramp your space but it is ideal for bigger homes and those that have open space plans.

Preferring the dark floors also means you have to be wary with the overhead lighting as well as the wall colors to use. These have to be lighter – not darker – than the color of the flooring.

Choose an Ambiance

If you want a more cheerful and sunnier atmosphere, then you should go for the lighter hardwood floor. Dark floors, on the other hand, exude elegance. They are also warmer and more impressive.

The Holiday Ready Home

Wednesday, September 19th, 2018

The Cynthia Rowley for Hooker Furniture Bedroom Twiggy Mirror is the perfect color and look for both fall and winter décor.

Halloween is right around the corner and the Christmas season is also about to unfold. Have you started decorating yet? This is the perfect time to start prepping for the activities that are about to take place. If not, you’re risking feeling stressed over the holiday season.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to make the holidays special. More often than not, though, these days bring in a lot stress (emotionally, physically, financially, etc.). Don’t let the holiday rush get to you. Here are some tips that you can prepare yourself – and your home – for the holidays –

Planning and Budgeting Are Key

As always, planning will help you keep your sanity intact. Sit down with a cup of hot cocoa, a notebook or your laptop and the desk calendar. Dump anything that you’re doing at the moment and make time for this.

Include family traditions, work and church events, even community activities on your planning. List also the people whom you would want to give gifts to as well as the parties that you are planning to attend. Try to remember or investigate family activities during the holidays. What special sights can you visit as a family?

Holiday outings can be fun. Make a list of parades and activities in your locality then try to make the most out of the holidays. You could go ice skating, decorate sugar cookies, or watch certain movies.

Keep this list realistic. There is nothing more stressful than packing your calendar with activities that you’d end up not being able to attend. Remember that you’re only human so you can only do so much.

Have a holiday planner if you have to and include the budget for the holidays, too.

Calculate how much money you are willing to set aside for every gift. Write down your budget. This will serve as your guide as the holidays set in. Budgeting will also avoid uncomfortable situations. Speak with your extended family.

Shop Early

If you religiously listed all the names of the people who will receive a gift from you, then you can now shop early. Parents who have kids to think about each Christmas even layaway early so that they are not tempted to use their credit cards as Christmas day approaches.

Who says you can’t shop for Christmas gifts as early as September?

And as you give, it’s time to consider the longevity of the gift. If you want to be remembered longer, then you can give furniture as a gift. An accent table will surely last longer than a dress.

Declutter Now

Don’t wait for the holidays before you begin decluttering. Remember that clutter can also contribute to lack of concentration and anxiety. Plus, you will feel calmer in an environment that does not show excesses.

Be sure to clean the pantry and the refrigerator. The non-perishables that you haven’t used for a long time can now be donated.

Clean also the bathrooms, the kids’ rooms, master bedroom, and just about every nook and cranny in your home. The secret is to purge anything that you don’t really need or want. Take a few hours each day to clean the spaces in your home.

Make the Reservations

You can also purchase your flights as early as September, this way, you are not rushed or forced to buy seats that you don’t want or transport options and hotels that don’t coincide with your plans.

Repair and Decorate

A part of purging and decluttering is to clean the gutters, roof, ceiling, nooks, and just about every spot in your home. And as soon as you’re done with the maintenance and repairs for the fireplace, electrical and plumbing systems it’s time to grab the totes from the basement or the garage and decorate.

Go with the Thanksgiving décor first then slowly fuse the Christmas elements as the days pass.

From Tiny to Expansive: How to Make a Small Room Appear Bigger

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018

The Elk Legged Stool from the Biltmore Collection is perfect for a tiny home because its legs take it far from the floor.

More and more people seem to be realizing the advantages of living in smaller homes. Maintenance and expense-wise, these homeowners embrace the lifestyle of owning a tiny house with a grateful heart.

Small homes are beautiful but just in the right hands. They are practical and easy to live in but you also have to do your part so that you won’t end up being grumpy in a cramped space. Here are some tips that can make you visually stretch your small habitat –

No More Clutter

There is nothing more cramping that a space that has too much stuff. Find ways that you can view and appreciate your collections without them stuffing the space. Learn to organize behind those doors, in shelves, and even under the dining room table skirts.

Things that are neatly arranged and are kept out of your sight will give your space an orderly, thus, a more spacious look.

Block Not

It’s time to open the way. If there are furniture pieces and accessories that are currently blocking spaces and views in your home, then it’s time to have them repositioned, stored or disposed.

Keep the walkways open by moving the furniture as far away from them as possible. Doing this will make the place appear and feel larger.

Use smaller pieces of furniture such as an armless chair, ottomans and a low table. If you still have a few pieces of tall and large furniture, then have them line the walls instead of having them take up valuable space.

A tiny home should be big on storage. The Hooker Furniture Dining Room Wakefield Metal Hutch can be both a decorative and functional element.

Lighter, Always

Creating a visually expansive space is easy when you know how to use proper hues. Pick only the lighter and softer hues. The warmer and darker colors will make the space cozier and more intimate but they also have the power to make your home look cramped.

Sheer fabrics are also your go to fabrics for your type of layout. These window treatments allow light and breeze to freely pass through. You can also use them as bed skirts, slipcovers, and table covers.

You can now choose from a variety of colors as well as patterns. Just keep the look simple by using only cool colors and delicate fabrics. Find other see-through materials. Get rid of that opaque glass in your shower enclosure. Replace it with the frameless, clear one. By doing so, you will realize that you’ve just doubled the space (only visually though).

Illuminate All the Time

Many interior design professionals now use track lighting instead of lamps. Small rooms tend to function and look better with the former, that’s why. There are now beautiful track lights that can fill up a small space with light. Find the style that goes with the lighting fixtures that you have chosen. Lobbies are lit quite differently from bedrooms but since your goal is to make the room appear bigger, just make sure that it’s amply lit each time that it’s in use.

And during the day, make sure that natural light freely flows in. Get rid of the heavy draperies and open up the windows. Lastly, make good use of reflective surfaces such as mirrored walls and glass tabletops.

Coordinate

The enemy of a tiny home is a broken up space caused by contrasting hues. Learn to coordinate colors by having the walls and furnishings come in the same color family.

Sometimes Bigger Is Better

At times, the use of a few large pieces of furniture or accessories can also work. Their upholstery must be kept plain so that they do not clash with the existing design. Allow texture to create the visual interest.

The armchairs and sofas that have raised legs can create a sense of spaciousness. Dispose any furniture that are dark and have unnecessary details.

The Masculine vs. Feminine Interior Design

Tuesday, September 18th, 2018

Just by looking at these two chairs, you can surely pinpoint which one will go inside a masculine room and which will look perfect in a feminine space. Featured pieces are, from left to right, the Hooker Furniture Living Room Windward Dart Honey Chair and the Hooker Furniture Living Room Kato Leather Club Chair with Dark Brindle.

If you were asked, would you be able to pinpoint the masculine from the feminine décor? Many people default into the blue and pink palettes while others say that whichever color is used, both sexes can actually embrace the style. While this is also true, there are certain elements that can make a room appear traditionally feminine or masculine and the best rooms are often a fusion of both.

Defining a room to be more masculine does not mean that it can only be used by a man. It just says that it has qualities that are often associated or linked with masculinity than femininity. But have you ever wondered why certain features look more masculine while other characteristics are perceived to be feminine?

If you’re still wondering, let’s break the characteristics down and, of course, ladies first.

The Feminine Touch

The pink palette always helps, however, this isn’t the only hue that works in a feminine setting. Other elements that could make a room more girly are the small details such as the tiny floral prints, some delicate paintings hung on the walls. There could also be vases of flowers on corners and the fireplace.

At times, it’s not about flowers and having a pink color base. One can still feel the feminine vibe if the designer uses other delicate accents such as a fine bed tray, some pillows, and scalloped linens.

Feminine rooms have a pretty neutral furniture line. You could go shabby chic or country yet the elegance remains. Whether you add comfy and soft things such as a tufted headboard, light hues, delicate prints, fine golds, and whatnot, the refinement is what always remains.

Feminine rooms also play well with patterns. These spaces make good use of botanicals, florals, and the darkest they could go is damask. Polka dots are also sometimes seen and the materials used are mirrors, gilt, crystals, laces, and everything that’s sweetly feminine.

For the stronger women, textures are the go to design element. Combine shiny and soft textures with matte. Experiment with depth by adding layers of textures. Use velvet, cotton, chenille, silk, and cashmere – just to emphasize the femininity of it all.

The Sturdiness of Masculine Spaces

The rooms that gravitate towards masculinity are often decorated with earthy hues. Think on the line of grays, browns, and charcoal black and you have the perfect manly room.

‘Talk of being macho, this does not mean that the room automatically has to be dark. You can try darker shades with pops of bright colors. Just bear in mind that bold tones like deep red and dark jewel hues are best.

Masculine rooms are also devoid of frills. In place of these embellishments, you will see straight and sleek lines. These do not close the doors on soft edges, though. Generally, masculine silhouettes are either geometric or clean-lined. Don’t infuse curvy elements or you’d be in danger of putting too much femininity in the space.

In order to depict the strength of man, you can also use patterns such as plaids, stripes and herringbone. Solids are safest but you can always experiment with the exciting patterns mentioned. Of course, veer away from florals and other patterns that are often perceived to be pretty.

The materials that you use in a masculine room also count. These have to be polished mahogany or glass, concrete, even steel. Their textures also have the power to visually break the room.

If you have to hang artworks in a masculine space, then be sure to find the biggest and boldest masterpieces. Black and white photos are best and they look amazing on walls right under huge wood beams.

Patio Furniture Safety for the Holidays

Monday, September 17th, 2018

The American Leather Living Room Aiden Chair blends the classic look of Mid-century style with the scenic outdoors.

Summer’s long gone and with the colder seasons taking center stage, it is time to prepare your patio now for the long hibernation ahead. This is also so that when spring comes, you’d be ready to enjoy the outdoors once again. So how do you keep patio furniture safely tucked this fall and winter?

Rust-free Metals

It is, of course, always best to read the manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to taking good care of your outdoors furniture. Most of the aluminum pieces that are out in the market these days have been powder coated. This is so the pieces are kept free from rust.

Experts also suggest that you wash aluminum furniture pieces then apply a single coat of automotive wax. This is a simple and affordable maintenance tip that you can do annually. Touch up if you see any scratches. Use car paint with the right color.

As for wrought-iron pieces, know that you will encounter rust somewhere down the road. You can remove rust accumulation using a wire brush. After this, coat the furniture with an exterior paint that was specifically designed for wrought-iron pieces.

Let dry then cover with tarp that will keep the furniture intact until spring.

Galvanized metal is known to be more durable than regular metal. While this is so, it is not exempted from the eventual rigors of the cold climate. It is always best to keep your metal furniture in a spot where they won’t be exposed to the elements during fall and winter.

All these maintenance steps are necessary to keep the metal furniture from developing rust and eventually weakening.

Stain-free Fabrics

If there are a few fabric pieces in your patio, then you should work extra hard in keeping those mildew, mold, and stain-free throughout the cold seasons. The easiest way to avoid black spots is to shake them off or to vacuum them.

Detergent and bleach mixtures are best for tough stains. A cup of bleach can be used for every gallon of water. You can then add a little detergent. Use these on non-cotton or printed fabrics. For these, just use a simple solution of water and soap.

Clean Cushions

Ain’t it just wonderful to lay down in a cushioned seat during summer? You would want to go back to that lovely feeling once the holidays are over. There are now many outdoor furniture pieces that come with removable cushions.

When not in use, you can store these cushions inside a storage box. Be sure to use the heavy-duty type or you would be left with fabrics that need to be thawed later on.

Additionally, you should store the cushions so they are kept free from mold and mildew. Cover them with plastic or tarp so that dust won’t accumulate while they are awaiting their reuse.

Elegant Natural Materials

One of the most durable types of woods that are often used in patios is teak. It offers an elegant look that just keeps getting better with time. Use specialty oil once each year. For painted woods, be sure to keep them shielded from the sun’s rays. If they remain exposed, you will soon see that they’d lose their color plus the paint would begin to fade as well.

For an all-year-round furniture, be sure to use synthetic wicker or rattans. Paint the areas that are already flaking.

As for wood patio furniture, make sure that they are sealed for the colder seasons. Use a protective sealant to keep your wood furniture from being damaged by moisture. Snow brings with it a lot of moisture which would eventually cause wood cracks. A sealed furniture will not be soaked in moisture.

Do this same thing with raw wood.

Charmingly Scandinavian

Monday, September 17th, 2018

Coming soon is the Hooker Furniture Living Room Amani Spot Accent Table which perfectly evokes the relaxed and modern style of Nordic interiors.

Also referred to as Hygge or Nordic design, this interior style has swept the world with its distinct look. Various magazines and websites featured the simplistic beauty and minimalistic functionality of this interior design.

Emerging in the ’50s, Scandinavian interior design has emphasized the beauty of craftsmanship and muted elegance in many homes. If you want to have this neutral style be the look for your home these holidays, then here are some tips to make it work –

Be Mindful of Lighting

It becomes imperative to think of ways to better light your home with just seven hours of daylight in winter. And since you have decided to make this your style, you should know that light is a huge part of it.

Lighting in Scandinavian design centers on mood building through proper illumination and ample amounts of light. As you would delve deeper into this style, you will soon notice that most of the lighting fixtures are bordering on industrial style. Pendants are also quite common as well as wall sconces.

Candle lighting is also a common whimsical feature. Votives can give you the right ambiance.

And since Scandinavian interiors are big on lighting, why not make illumination more exciting with the Maitland-Smith Accessories Brass Candlestick 8167-16?

Linear Furniture

When it comes to furniture, the way to go would always be clean lines. Whether you’re thinking of getting new tables, chairs or sofas, it is safest if you also refer to the Mid-century modern style.

The round edges that this style offers as well as its natural hues are all welcome inside Scandinavian interiors. The secret is also to be space savvy, meaning, there is a place for everything and for everything there is a place.

Light Hardwood Flooring

If you’re a huge fan of wall-to-wall carpeting, then you won’t find it here. Scandinavian homes are traditionally made of hardwood. Don’t go for dark hardwood, though, as this is against the white or natural-colored flooring that is a staple of Scandinavian flooring.

Whether you’re installing the living room or bathroom flooring, always consider the neutral hues that are the standard for these spaces.

Neutral Palette

Speak of neutral colors, Nordic style is definitely a choice of grays, whites, browns, and blacks. These are also often interwoven with the calming and clean interiors popping with dusty pinks or sea green as accent hues.

Walls are typically painted white which allows for artworks and furniture to captivate.

Zero Clutter

What’s a Scandinavian interior if it’s filled with clutter? Since Nordic homes have enough storage spaces, then it is expected that there won’t be unnecessary clutter. Shelves and cabinets are a huge deal in such a home and while less is more, any Copenhagen native will tell you that the furnishings are all intentional.

Warm Textiles

Since Scandinavian homes show lots of whites and neutrals, the only way to balance these is to provide warmth with the mohair, sheep skin or wool cushions and throws. These do not just make your home look more comforting, they can even add to the needed depth provided by texture layers.

It Ain’t Just Tulips for Accents

It is equally important to add living elements to your Scandinavian home. Fresh flowers are the best way to go since they also look luxurious and stylish. Just picture the sidewalks filled with flower shops in Copenhagen and you’ll realize just how colorfully attractive tulips and other flowers could get.

Don’t limit the colors in your home. Make the indoors more flamboyant.

Decorative accents can also be ceramic vases or those cushions with geometric patterns. Explore all the beautiful textures that will balance the canvas that has been set by the style itself.

The Fireplace as the Focal Piece

If you have to make a statement, then say it with a fireplace. Find a corner or the center of the living room where this architectural feature will surely stand out. Then be sure to decorate it according to the Scandinavian design rules and you’re all set.

2018 Fall Décor

Friday, September 7th, 2018

Figure 1. Traditional fall decor in minimalist form. Featured is the Winners Only Dining Room 78 Inches Table With 18 Inches Butterfly Leaf DSB14278A.

It’s Fall once again so warm colors are out to take on the center stage for this season.

There are many luscious ways to decorate your home in a festive and chic way. Simple gourds, traditional pumpkins, unique foliage, and pinecones are the most popular things used which – if you don’t want anything to do with – can also be used as a source of inspiration.

Mix different elements and display them prominently on the mantel or have them adorn the steps of your interesting staircase. Creating a fall wreath is a family project that you can work on one of these weekends. You can also line up miniature pumpkins or have a huge one displayed prominently on your porch.

If you’re feeling a bit of artistic flair surging through you, then why not make a fall pumpkin tableau right by your foyer? Bringing the fall vibe into the dining room is as easy as creating a fall-inspired centerpiece. Just create the perfect mix of white, green tones, and orange hues and you have the enviable modern cornucopia.

Decorate Your Mantel This Fall

It’s not just enough to update the furniture or the wall paint this fall. If you want to complete the look, you should also consider the decorative elements that will adorn architectural features in your home. The fireplace mantel, for instance, is a spot that should reflect the current season. Below is the Uttermost Accessories Chouteau Clock that’s antiqued and has a dusty gray finish. Its burnished edges are so correct for the moment just as it is also accurate in timekeeping.

It will surely be a wonderful timepiece to feature on the mantel. Apart from clocks, you can also layer framed arts or photographs. A painting or a large mirror would also make a huge difference in terms of decorative value.

Use Fireside Colors

You may combine different mantel displays. You can repurpose window, garden gates, and shutters. Simple stuff like fallen leaves can become the accent that will complete the look in your living room, dining room or bedroom.

You could also set up a farm fresh appeal by adding crates of small pumpkins in front of the fireplace.  Glowing, lit candles can also replace the usual burning logs.

A Lot of Fresh and Dried Stuff

Fall is the perfect season to evoke the time for harvest. Use vivid foliage for everyone’s enjoyment. Have them placed in a decorative jar and use them as a table centerpiece. You can also have a table runner that’s in any neutral color and then you can just sprinkle the right amount of pinecones and dried leaves to make it more exciting.

The best plants for fall include the Sumac, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Pansies, Beautyberry, Russian Sage, Blue Star Amsonia, and the Goldenrod. You can also have your container garden refilled with Coral Bells. If you have more time to carve a pumpkin pot, then plant your Coral Bells inside that flaming orange carved pumpkin.

Verbena is also an amazing bloomer and so it will look great when it flowers this season. Its colors range from dark blue to the most amazing shades of red. Other plants that you can also use include the Oxalis, decorative cabbages, Sedum, White Clover, Calibrachoa, and Creeping Jenny.

Harvest Display

Since this is the season to harvest, you can also create a bountiful display right in your porch. Welcome your guests to an old ladder surrounded with baskets of marigolds, candle lanterns, some dried plants, corn stalks, and a variety of pumpkins.

You can also make this ensemble more elegant when you decide to bring it indoors and make a special design with the pillar candles right on pedestals close to a vase of silk flowers and a pumpkin assortment.
