Buy two nightstands so that both of you have something to put your stuff on. Buy only one and you risk having to quarrel for storage space.
Go for Double Function
You could consider investing in a futon that can turn into a bed at night. This is especially useful if you have limited space. As a married couple that is just starting on their new life, you should opt for furnishings that offer double (if not triple) functions.
Apart from the practicality of turning the couch into a bed at night, see if you can have nesting tables become your dining table or a desk for your home office. After use, they can be stacked again so that they won’t take up too much space.
A Word of Caution
Know that all marriages begin with the honeymoon phase where everything is rosy and cute and filled with rainbows. All these will eventually wane but don’t let something as trivial as furniture shopping get in the way of your relationship.

Be sure to pare down the collections that you have and be able to store items properly. Not every bottle of hard liquor should be included in your bar cart. In fact, if the cart does not have a wine rack where you can horizontally store bottles, then you’re just going to destroy wines’ quality.
For all types of wine, proper storage means keeping them out of the direct rays of the sun. They must also be stored horizontally so that the cork will not dry up since it will always be touching the wine. Cork that dries up will eventually let in air, which will spoil the wine, and you wouldn’t want that.
Add Items That You Love
Keep bottles of tonic, club soda, a jigger, and other stuff that will help you concoct the drinks that you have on the cart. Don’t hesitate to add some things that are special. Sure, they may not be regularly served but come the time that you need something unique to serve, then you’ve got them.
Examples of these are liquors like Grand Marnier or St. Germain. Add the latter to champagne and it’s a level up to the usual cocktail. Use Grand Marnier with cranberry juice plus some fresh lime and what you have is a Grand Cran.
Basic Should Do It
If you’re in doubt about what to serve, then it is best to keep it all simple. The less cluttered the bar cart, the better that it will look.
That bare bones sort of bar cart could have a bottle of red wine, a bottle of white wine, one sparkling juice bottle, a bourbon or whiskey bottle, a single bottle of gin or vodka, of course a bottle of tequila, and a triple sec or more popularly known as the orange liqueur.
Those who love to have a nightcap should have a bottle of scotch that’s sublime whether neat or on the rocks.

The chill in the air just confirms that winter is still around. It is quite appealing to just crawl under the sheets and just hibernate. But this hibernation will only be made possible by comfortable and soft mattress and pillows.
The great news is, if your bed still isn’t on par with the standards of comfort, then you still have time to transform it. And as soon as you’re done changing a few things, you can already curl up in your comfy bed and sleep through the cold weather.
So, what should you do to achieve this level of comfort?
Change the Sheets
Altering the sheets will make a big difference. Don’t worry, it’s not too late. Sure, you could use the cotton sheets still but you might miss out on the warmth and comfort that different options could offer.
Take, for instance, some new flannel sheets. These are soft and warm but they are also durable. Do you wanna have a more luxurious sheet? Then opt for silk. This is also a naturally hypoallergenic material. It is even better than cotton when it comes to insulation, meaning, you’ll feel warmer under silk sheets.
If you’re not thinking of buying new sets of sheets for now, then you can just pile the blankets and add to the thickness of the current layer. This is definitely not the best option especially when you easily sweat under thick sheets.
Use an Electric Blanket or Heating Pad
You might have observed that even when you have already added more blankets that the temperature is still too cold; if this is the case, then you can warm up the bed by using an electric blanket. Use this before you slip under the sheets.
Use a bit of caution when using a heating pad or an electric blanket, though. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions as well as other safety tips from the Electrical Safety Foundation International.
Add More Pillows and Throws
You don’t just add warmth when you put more throws and pillows inside the bedroom, you also create texture.
Scour your closets for the pillows and throws that have rich and luxurious materials. The bedroom design can be infused with materials such as fur, leather, velvet, and cable knit. You can stick to just one texture or experiment with several others. You can always layer should you consider having more than one.
A faux fur throw that’s carefully placed in an accent chair or on the foot of a bed is the best scene-stealer. It is also awesome for those chilly nights.
Flannel can also be a rich, luxurious alternative for a fluffy surface. It is also known to be an effective material that retains heat.
Ample Lighting
Since you’ll have longer nights, you need to plan how to light the bedroom. Since there’s an apparent lack of sunshine, you can scatter the lights all around the bedroom so that you’ll achieve a glow that will make it appear that you’re illuminating from within.
You may use incandescent lamps so you can have a warmer glow inside this room. Such bulbs mimic the sun’s glow. To optimize the impact, you can have multiple bulbs or sconces flanking your bed. If not, then the go-to lighting fixture is a chandelier.
Enough candles in the room (just be careful that you don’t start a fire) could help you achieve hygge.

Can you imagine a world where there weren’t any headboards? You might answer to the affirmative but did you ever stop to consider what the reason is behind the creation of this interesting part of furniture?
Many might say that the headboard is there to make the bed look more aesthetically pleasing, however, it is much more than this. Did you know that it can serve as a back support, as a buffer for a cold wall, and it is even believed to help with Feng Shui.
The Headboard History
Let’s backtrack a little. The headboard has a long history. In fact, it has gone through so many changes over the years. It was originally made to act as a barrier against the cold, meaning, it was chiefly made so that the person who sleeps will remain warm.
Headboards were originally just made of wood because it is less conductive, thermally. They used to have thick end pillars so that there’s ample space between the bed and the wall. This also allows the cold air to fall to the floor instead of the bed.

Designing Headboards
If you’re wishing to alter the look of your bedroom but are still not sure where to start, then you can always begin with a statement headboard. This will easily set the tone for the entire bedroom.
First, you can introduce pattern through the headboard. Patterns on the headboard will surely become the focal point in the room. Alternatively, a plain headboard is an effective way to break up a rather bold wallpaper. Imagine a monochrome room where the square headboard mimics the geometric designs on the wallpaper; just add some pillows and a sleek bedside table and you’re done.
You can also look for wicker, rattan, and bamboo style headboard which will serve as retro style pieces. Any of these will render a Boho look for your bedroom. Should you grow tired of this look, then you can always paint the piece with a different color.
The headboard can also be the creative piece in a mainly white room. Pick a fabric with striking pattern and have this repeated on pillows and throws. Try looking through the hottest home magazines today and you are bound to see some chinoiserie elements. You are likely to see foo dogs and the brightest lacquer finishes. Chinoiserie is no longer just limited to the blue and white porcelain designs anymore.
Fascinating History
Chinoiserie is a term which was derived from the French word chinois which literally translates to Chinese. Although this is indicative of Asian roots, this style was not actually from that continent but from Europe. The Europeans interpreted Asian culture as well as their decorative arts and – voila – Chinoiserie was born.
Chinoiserie came into existence in the 17th century. This was because of Europe’s trading relationships with China and other East Asian countries. Who wouldn’t love Asian culture, anyway? It’s exotically beautiful.
The European’s interpretations weren’t always correct, though, since they didn’t know a lot about the region. Very few of them have actually traveled to Asia. Though this is the case, Europeans revered Asian art and culture.
Pretty soon, Europeans were crafting East Asian-looking artifacts. These pieces paired beautifully with the ornate rococo designs which were quite stylish during that century. The royals and nobles loved the pieces as is evidenced by the pieces in Louis XV’s and King George IV’s palaces.
Tea also became popular when the Asians exported it to Europe. The very culture of drinking tea in Europe also has Asian roots. This tea-drinking tradition then paved the way for tea sets, tea chests, tea tables, and other such pieces.
The Motifs
The foo dog may be named as such but it is actually a lion. This dates back all the way to Imperial China where lions guarded the gates of temples and palaces. The foo dogs usually come in pairs (a male and a female). These two represent yin and yang.
Another motif is the pagoda. While this is most often associated with East Asian architecture, the pagoda actually comes from India. Buddhism brought the pagodas to China where they were eventually assimilated into the region’s architecture.
Scenes from nature are also popular Chinoiserie motifs. These were often printed on wallpapers and became quite popular in upper class homes in Europe. These were handmade so they were costly. The most requested designs were lush gardens and florals.
Of course, what’s an Asian motif without the dragon? This mythical creature symbolizes good luck and strength so it holds a prominent level in Chinese folklore and mythology. Many historical emperors loved the dragon as a motif so they used it in their interior design and clothing.
Today, these famous Chinoiserie designs are seen on silk screens, ceramics, and even the most lavish works of art.
Chinoiserie Furnishings
Faux bamboo and lacquered wood are two of the most used materials for chinoiserie furniture. Asian lacquer traditional pieces are considered as works of art. These require the best artisan skills and techniques that were honed throughout the thousands of years that they were practiced.
Achieving the lacquer shine requires artisans to coat furniture with many layers of tree sap. As the glossy finish becomes evident, they are further embellished with inlaid details, hand-painted nature scenes, and ornate carvings.
Thomas Chippendale propagated the style where the Chinese Chippendale became a desired furnishing.
Ceramics and porcelain are best known because they are the most wanted chinoiserie art. European designers mimicked the Ming blue and white jar and vase patterns. They even made tea sets specifically designed to look Asian.
