5 Decorating Mistakes That Cramp Your Home

Hooker Furniture Bedroom Arabella Storage Bench

Have you ever come across a room or a section of your home wherein you lose all hope of ever making it look more spacious? Don’t fret or, worse, lose hope. There are some simple changes that can actually help the room appear bigger than it truly is.

A tiny bedroom can become a relaxing retreat when you learn to utilize the room’s best aspects. A small lighting fixture addition or a fresh coat of paint will make any room become the most favored room in your home. Here are some things that you do that you might not know have cramped your home –

Clutter

This is the leading or most frequent mistake that homeowners make. Picture a small room holding all of your belongings. Before long, the space is already overrun with things that you don’t even need.

Declutter and you will soon realize the amount of space that you’re able to free up.

Organize all your stuff and leave only those that you regularly use. Find stylish organizers that will hold the things that you need to store. That space under your bed is also an instant solution to decluttering. But this does not mean that you should shove all of your things there.

Check out furniture that have double functions. An ottoman that has a secret storage space is a wonderful addition to any small space.

Don’t hang a lot of items if you also don’t want to make your walls look cluttered.

Darkness

If you don’t consider adding enough lights then you’re steering clear of depth and drama. Poor lighting can easily make any room feel and appear small. Any lighting source will add unique features that even have the power to make a room appear bigger.

A small window must not be dressed with dark or heavy curtains. Instead, opt for sheer and light curtains that would allow natural light to fill the room.

Should you have a room that does not have any windows, then be sure to incorporate even soft lighting. Use track lighting to illuminate the rest of the room without giving up on style. Install recessed lights to control the lighting amount and also to make the room appear trendier.

Another way to dispel darkness in any room is to add and strategically use mirrors. Angle the mirrors so that they get ample light from a lighting source.

Dark Paint

Small room and dark paint? You’ve got to be extra careful in using these together. Sure, there are a few stylish rooms out there that have accomplished the successful fusion of both but, generally, painting a tiny room with dark paint will only cramp it further.

Search for lighter hues that will be able to help you reflect the light throughout the space. Light gray or off-white can also add character in the room. Add colors only through your accessories.

To add a more interesting part in a small room, use patterned wallpaper on an accent wall. This is a chic way to add extra oomph without actually sacrificing space.

Pushing Furniture Against Walls

Need we say more? This is also one of the most common errors that homeowners make in the hope of creating extra space. In reality, this technique is actually a visual cause for cramping. So go ahead and move those furniture pieces away from the walls, yes, especially that large couch.

Not Trusting an Interior Designer

Not trusting an expert? Not a good thing.

Especially when you’re already feeling lost, it’s best to call an interior designer. This professional will determine your needs and will help bring the elements that will make the small room bigger.

Making the Better Basement

Wednesday, August 8th, 2018

Use this beautiful Fine Furniture Design Biltmore Five-Drawer piece as a divider in your newly-remodeled basement.

The chief reason why there are basements in many homes is just for that extra storage space. But there is so much more about this space than just a mere storage area. You can go through the troubles of remodeling and cleanups but these tasks are all going to be worth it. So, how would you make your basement become livable and also more functional?

Setting up a functional basement could mean differently to every family. But there are projects that stand out above the rest because they do not just enhance the look of the property but also increase its value. Pick a few ideas below –

Pastel Paint ‘Em

This lower level part of your home is also often the darkest spot. For obvious reasons, you need to pick a light-colored paint to brighten up or illuminate this room. Light paint will make the room more entertaining and relaxing while darker hues may be used when you would want to use the room as, say, a theater.

Light ‘Em

Strategic lighting can make a lot of difference in the basement. A lot of homeowners make the mistake that since it’s dark in that room, it is no longer important to worry about lighting. You should think the opposite.

Lighting can set the mood in this place especially when you’re planning on converting it to a spare bedroom or a man cave.

A Window or Two

Another way to remodel the basement is to let in more light. You can achieve this not just by installing additional lighting fixtures but also by constructing a new window or two. Regulations state that should you convert the basement to a spare bedroom, that it should already have an egress window.

When custom excavation is needed, the cost for window installation could get a tad higher. Homeowners reported the egress window costs at an average of $2,218. The lowest cost is listed at just $400 and the highest being $4,900.

Function First

Never assume that the basement is created for mere lounging or storing stuff. Talk with your family and brainstorm on how much more function you can get out of this room. You can make it livable by converting it to a play area for the kids or as a crafts room for mom. You can also set up a bar that filled with your favorite spirits.

The Bar or Wine Cellar

Your basement does not necessarily have to become a spare bedroom by default. It can also become a social hub when you transform it into a wine cellar or a bar. Just imagine a fully-stocked bar right in that area. It is a wonderful place to store bottles of your favorite wine and other hard drinks to entertain your family, relatives, and friends.

This is a setup that’s a surefire hit especially when you’re a frequent party host. In setting up your bar downstairs, you also get to free up some of the kitchen space. Just add a sink, some more cabinets, and a TV set and you’ve got the best social nook.

The Multiple Rooms

You can also section off the different spaces when you have a big basement to work on. Use cabinets and drawers as simple dividers or even entertainment centers as a means to separate the different livable areas.

If you want a simple cordoning off of the sections, you can also use a panel divider.

Add a Luxurious Spa Bathroom

A new bathroom would also be a nice addition to any home. Bring in the needed equipment and furnishings to make this space a luxurious and restful spot. Invest in a shower room, vanity, and toilet. These three simple things can make a lot of difference.

Must-Know Interior Designer Secrets

Tuesday, August 7th, 2018

Fine Furniture Design Summer Home Bamboo Mirror is perfect for reflecting light and in establishing Feng Shui in the right places.

Was there a time when you walked into a wonderfully designed room and you wonder just how the entire ensemble was created? While the design is easy on the eye, everything that you see takes a lot to plan and set up. Just imagine all the elements that have to blend like the colors, furnishings, and accessories, and you’d have a slight idea on what an interior designer has to work on each day.

Interior designers and home decorators come with artistic inclinations (at least most of them) and they are able to see the elements described above in a way that would bring aesthetic beauty and function in a home.

If you want to learn some designer secrets that you can also use in your home, here are some –

Never Overstuff

An interior designer, when asked what he could give as an advice to new homeowners, would often say, do not overcrowd. Be cautious in placing elements – many elements that is – like furnishings and utilities.

Getting excited is a part of owning a home but you shouldn’t get too excited that you end up destroying the potential of your habitat. Don’t make purchases that are more than what’s necessary. Learn to create a plan for every item that you would add.

Pick a Color

Take a look at those well-designed rooms once again. What do you notice? Most of them – if not all of them – have colors that fuse wonderfully together. The basic psychology of color dictates that the colors you pick for your home would emphasize the mood that you want to evoke there.

Once again, picking a color needs planning especially when you want the color scheme to be a long-term thing. There are literally thousands of color palettes for any home. Never forget your personal preferences and then the style that you want to use.

Of course, if you choose a traditional color scheme, you should be ready to embrace neutrals such as beige, taupes, grays, and shades of white. If you like the more contemporary styles, then go for vibrant colors and linear furnishing designs.

Pick a Paint

Now that you know what color or colors to use in your home, it’s now time to match these colors with the paint. The paint color must also match the decorative items throughout the rooms and must complement the other design elements.

Take note that mismatched hues can easily throw off a design. This is why choosing the right paint color is a task that must never be rushed.

Lighting with Mirrors

There are some rooms that are not as good in reflecting light as all the others. You can use mirrors strategically by placing, say, a huge one right across a window. This will help reflect the natural beauty of the outdoors that is seen on this huge window.

A group of mirrors can also become a one-of-a-kind decorative ensemble. Place mirrors in bathrooms, bedrooms, and the living room. These aren’t just light reflectors, they are great decorative pieces, too.

Yes to Feng Shui

There’s nothing bad in believing that energy surrounds everything and everyone. Since this is so, you might as well use Feng Shui principles in bringing balance, peace, and practical beauty to your home. Read all about Feng Shui 2018 for this year in our previous blog post.

The Uttermost Accessories Aquarium Fish Prints provided the needed pop of color in this mainly dark hallway.

Be Bold

Whenever possible, infuse a little bold color here and there. Contemporary trends emphasize the boldest colors, however, this does not mean that you paint your living room purple just because it is trending.

Use décor and accessories that complement the colors of the rest of your design.

Lastly, be bold in customizing the design according to your artistic perspective.

Summer 2018 Trends for Your Home

Uttermost Accessories Salar Succulents In Teak Bowl

Summer is all about being bold, beautiful and bright. These are the adjectives that are often used to describe summer because this is the season to go out, frolic under the sun, and just have plain fun. But how would you translate all these to interior design?

When thinking of summer, it is also easy to picture a bright, airy room with colorful décor. These are, of course, true every year but the textures, hues, and patterns can also be altered. As the saying goes, nothing is set in stone so you’re absolutely free to experiment, blend, and alter.

So let’s see what’s hot this season. Wall hangings, patterns, and daring gelato colors are in. Here are some ways that you can infuse these into your interiors –

Trendy Accents

A wonderful way to incorporate the delicious colors of summer is through texture. You can begin with the gold trend and use it first in some of your accent pieces. For instance, go for those gold-colored handles on coffee mugs. Or you can just go for the all-out gold on a lamp base. How about updating the frames on your gallery wall by adding gold edges?

Another inexpensive way to update your home is to paint any of the accent pieces in a room. You can also paint the back of a door with a fun, bold color that’s super trendy during summer. So go ahead and paint a door or two with bubblegum pink, bright lavender or lime green. These are the most popular hues for accessories this season.

Those Green Plants

We already know the many benefits of bringing in houseplants. These potted beauties are able to reduce carbon dioxide levels inside your home plus they also reduce other pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and benzene.

Perhaps you’ve also noticed how the dust levels are at their lowest when you have houseplants. So how would you display your houseplants this summer?

You don’t need to have a huge room in order to display indoor plants. These do not just clean the air but also become effective décor. Have a side table or two where you can place your plants. If not, then have a shelf where you can also keep them.

Be chic by having cascading plants displayed. There are also planters and pots where you can place your favorite plants. These do not just accentuate the plants but also help in decorating your room. Just be sure to get low-maintenance plants if you don’t have time to tend to them.

That staircase can also be used. Arrange your potted plants on each step for a greener and more beautiful staircase. Or how about setting up a tropical wall art? You can display flowering plants or just your small pots of greens right on your living room or dining room wall.

You can also grow succulents which are also quite trendy nowadays.

A Macramé

This is a type of art that is created when a string or cord is used in creating patterns. The resulting pieces are then used as decorative articles. The beauty of this woven piece is that it can have many interior decorating uses.

First, there are many homeowners who are now using macramé in hanging their potted plants. There are also those who use it as a beautiful grand piano topper. You can also go retro by using macramé as fiber art on your walls. These are those little hops with some macramé that’s woven as a dream catcher. Votive holders can also be covered with this unique piece of fabric art.

Terrazzo Patterns

Why not? These are often used as tile flooring but they can also become an inspiration for wall décor and textile choices. You can also use them on accent pieces such as blankets, the bedding, and throw pillows.

The Woman Cave and Its Essentials

Saturday, August 4th, 2018

Marge Carson Dining Room Design Folio Credenza_Dresser

The space for a woman can take on many different names and terms. It has been referred to as the she shed or an oasis, while others simply refer to it as the woman cave. Whichever name you end up choosing to call your own private space, it is no secret that every woman is in need of a space where she can relax and simply be herself. She can also use the room to house her crafts and hobbies.

The woman cave should be a room where she best expresses herself. Since this is so, it should show her favorite things as well as her interests. So, are you finally ready to create this space that’s solely yours?

The Femme Paint

Don’t default to pink. There are wide spectra of colors to choose from and don’t immediately grab a can of pink paint just to prove that the room is for a woman or a girl. Explore and experiment. This year’s Pantone Color of the Year – UltraViolet – is such an inspiring hue that can jump-start your design.

To find out what color you gravitate to, you might want to imagine that mood that you are trying to set in that room. If you want to create a hideaway, then you can use hues of green and purple. These two colors, when used properly, should help you de-stress.

A woman cave that is a place for creativity should have hues of pinks, bright blues, or oranges. These hues are known to stimulate creativity and deep thinking.

The woman cave painting project can be yours to do or you can share it with your loved ones. It costs anywhere from $1, 200 to about $1,820.

Use Wall Art

What better way is there to showcase one’s creativity and uniqueness than a piece of art? And for your woman cave, hang it on a wall for everyone to enjoy.

A gallery wall can be a way to display family photos uniquely. These framed photos can be black and white shots or your matte or glossy types grouped according to a particular theme.

And who says wall art is all about hanging framed photos or paintings? You can also use the same wall to hang a chalkboard. You can then draw there using colored chalk or just write quotes that will inspire you throughout the day.

Use Patterns

What is a woman cave without patterns to boost? What specific pattern do you love? If you love floral prints then this is your big chance to showcase them in your woman cave. If these are a little too feminine for you, then you can always go for geometric, striped, and many more.

If you’re feeling up to it, you can even create an accent wall with a unique pattern.

Customize It

The only way to call a woman cave your own is if you take the time to personalize it. Use baskets or even monogrammed blankets to give the space some character. There are now a lot of woman cave door signs which are now for sale online. Check out the best one that represents you.

Set Up Ample Storage

Whether you would use the woman cave as a room for relaxation or for pursuing a hobby, it will always need storage. You will need to organize your stuff in the room so there should be enough room to hold them.

Check out some drawers and cabinets that match the theme which you set up. Unique shelves can even add to the style of your woman cave. See if you would prefer floating shelves or geometric-shaped shelving.

Natural Lighting in the Bedroom (Or Should It be Left Dark?)

Friday, August 3rd, 2018

The windows play a huge role in brightening up this bedroom. Featured is the Etheral Cal King Bed from the Veranda Collection of Fine Furniture Design.

The bedroom is a sanctuary of sorts. This is a place of relaxation and rest. It is a place where you are supposed to feel rejuvenated. Though this is the room where you are supposed to sleep, this does not mean that it should be bathed in darkness 24/7.

Having a brighter bedroom is a good way to find your way more easily around the space during the morning. It is not forbidden to infuse bright colors or even to install lights that are supposed to energize the occupant. After all, the right kind of lighting can make you feel more cheerful and would even help you have a positive outlook in life.

So, what do you need to do to make the bedroom drink in natural light and for it to be a place of retreat, not dullness?

Say Goodbye to Old Furniture

The first thing that you need to consider is to freshen up the bedroom by replacing old furniture. Those big ticket stuff in this space are your bed and the wardrobe. If these look battered and old, then it would be impossible to find rest in that space, or worse, you will not feel motivated to even get up in the morning.

Dark and old furniture [pieces don’t belong in a room where such pieces are magnified. If you really have to have a dark-colored bed, then be sure to have the rest of your décor in a more uplifting color. Be mindful of the stuff that you pick. If needful, you can always add a fresh paint coating.

Decorate the Bedroom Walls

The walls are a major element in your bedroom. They have the power to brighten up or darken the room depending on what colors you used to paint them. Dreary and dark paint will instantly dampen the bedroom ambiance. Since this is so, you would need to steer clear of dark paint colors.

If you want your bedroom walls to pop, then apply a fresh coat of paint. You also have a wide array of options for wallpapers. As you choose the color for your walls, consider the mood that you would want to evoke there.

Wall decals and art are also awesome ways to effortlessly add vibrancy and splashes of colors in the bedroom. Be sure to shop around and find the ones that also represent the same bedroom theme as yours.

Harmonize.

Use a White and Black Theme

The color scheme that is often referred to as black and white is known to draw in the brightest features that can reflect light. Be sure to use white as the main hue while having black as the accent color. Add just a few pieces of dark furniture when you have a mainly white backdrop. Even a simple black bedding will up the look of the bedroom.

As for the bedroom’s window treatments, be sure to use soft fabrics and sleek lines only. You can layer, though, when you add drapes and blinds. Together, these can add depth to your bedroom. It is an effective way to add charm and color.

You can also, according to design experts, layer dual drape styles. The inner drapes can be thin while the outer ones become the decorative part. Light and cheerful colors help in opening up the space. Open the windows during the day so that you let in some breeze, thus, freshening up the room.

Cozy and Cheerful Bedding and Pillows

Speak of bedding, this is one of the most important elements that you need to seriously think about. It is not just a piece of fabric that keeps you warm at night but also one that will increase the level of coziness and aesthetic appeal.

You need to update, therefore, the bedding as well as the pillows. There isn’t a shortage of choices when it comes to these two things but you have to choose well.

Feng Shui 2018

Friday, August 3rd, 2018

The Uttermost Accessories Bianzhong Tabletop Accents is a tabletop interpretation of the ancient Chinese musical instrument, bianzhong, in which the bells graduate in size to provide a different sound when struck with the mallet. Displayed on a fir wood base

Would you want to spend the rest of your 2018 in prosperity and happiness? Of course, you would. To be able to do this, though, you will need to kick start the energy or qi (pronounced chi) in your home. This means giving your home a fresh start and a makeover especially for 2018. It’s time to say yes to Feng Shui 2018.

Feng Shui literally means wind-water. This is believed to be science in China and it is used to create harmony and balance in work and living spaces. This makes good use of energy and knowing where it should flow so that it will increase your home’s happiness and prosperity.

Most of the techniques and teachings in Feng Shui remain the same throughout the years. The north and west portions of your home are particularly challenged this year. Your kind of property, say, flat or house, need to be oriented in terms of the interior layout as well as the star signs of the occupants. Such factors are known to affect the level of health, too.

The Five Elements of Feng Shui

  • Wood
  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Water
  • Metal

It is important to understand these elements and how they can contribute to your home’s positive aura. These are also used together with elements such as the BaGua and the Yin and Yang. To fully comprehend their relevance, try imagining how you feel when you are up in the mountains or by a river or when looking at a flower garden. This same feeling is what you should achieve within your home.

Feng Shui also means getting rid of things that could impede the flow of energy. This means clearing out the clutter and throwing or at least giving away your unused stuff. You do this in order to create a more peaceful environment.

Hallway Feng Shui for 2018

The hallway or entryway needs to be carefully studied because the front door is the mouth of energy. This should be unobstructed so that the qi can freely flow into your home. Avoid putting loads of coats behind the door.

Yup. You’d have to say no to hanging coats behind the door, also, be sure to put away your shoes to a storage space where they are out of sight.

Place a charming potted plant on the hallway right on a console table that has round edges. This does not just bring positive energy into the room, it also couples beautifully with a table lamp. Make sure also that the area is always well-lit even during the night. Use low energy bulbs to save on energy.

Get Rid of Energy Blocks

There are invisible and visible energies that constantly affect humans. Your floor plan, the nearby residences, and even the placement of furniture all make a difference to these energies. Symbolic energy blocks include that toilet lid which should be kept closed else money is believed to be flushed away. You should also check on the fresh plants and flowers that you bring into your home. Make sure to take them out of your home the moment that they wilt. Wilted or dead plants are known to stagnate the progress of a home.

Even if you don’t use the main or front door, be sure to hang a BaGua there. This has eight rays which symbolize eight areas of your life including your career, marriage, etc.

Bad Feng Shui is also having a dusty home or keep broken items. That bed which you place right under a window must also be rearranged so that it will not cause bad luck. Be sure also to fix those leaks on your roof because these also represent damaged stuff.

Get rid of aggressive corners as well and also the back and front doors which are perfectly aligned.

Decorating Your Home with Flowers

Thursday, August 2nd, 2018

The simplicity of the flower placement gave the needed pop of color in this living room. Featured here is Fine Furniture Design’s Veranda Collection.

What could be a better addition to anyone’s home than a fresh burst of color? Flowers whether displayed in a vase or the potted flowering plant can easily brighten any dull room. They also have the power to add freshness that is difficult to match. Flowers are your go-to element when you’re looking to up the visual appeal of your home.

You can opt for the fresh type or you can also stylishly incorporate faux flowers. There are many unique ways to do it especially when you want the look to last. First, you have to find out which flower choices are best for your home.

There are many flowers that you can even get directly from your garden (that is if you love gardening and flowering plants wow you). Your interiors will surely look great with these leading options –

  • Hydrangeas
  • Gerber daisies
  • Gardina
  • Lilies
  • Alstroemeria
  • Tulips
  • Spray Roses
  • Crasspedia
  • Ranunculuses

Real or Faux: Getting Over the Dilemma

When you’re considering flower décor, your earliest concern could be that choice between faux and fresh flowers. Many homeowners, unsurprisingly, have chosen to combine both. Depending on the project, it is often best to go for the fresh ones but, of course, you have to prepare for maintenance. You will have to change the flowers in those vases every few days.

Real flowers are known to bring warmth to any space. They even have a natural sweet scent so you don’t just increase the level of sophistication in your place, you also make it smell a lot better. Sure, they do not have a long lifespan and they do have a season but they are an amazing choice for a versatile décor on your dining table or the living room’s coffee table.

In adding fresh flowers, just make sure that they are safe and are out of reach of children and pets. Lilies and daffodils are known to be deadly to pets. If you really want to have these flowers in your home, then be sure to keep them in spots where your furry friend won’t be able to go to.

As for artificial or faux flowers, these are your low-maintenance option, however, be sure to look for those that look realistic because it would be awkward to see flowers that look obviously fake. There are certain kinds of faux flowers that look great for interiors. Be sure to match these flowers with the textures and patterns that you have already established in the room.

Be sure to dust off the flowers regularly.

The Floral Wall

How about a little project for you and your family? Flowers on your wall is a perfect addition to a living room, too. Of course, you would want this project to last so you could go for the artificial flowers for this one. You could use a wreath or flower mobile. If you have the skills, you can also use paper flowers as decorative pieces.

Floral Table Pieces

If you want to compliment your dining room or the kitchen, you can create a centerpiece using some fresh flowers. Stray from the norm this time. Instead of the usual vase in the middle of the dining table, why not use soda bottles or pitchers to hold your fresh flowers?

You can also use flowers together with candles for a more romantic setting. Just be sure to practice fire safety. Never put a candle beneath flowers or even near them. A safe way to do both is to light a floating candle and place them in a wide-mouthed glass vase filled with water. You can then place flowers (fake or real) together with the floating candles.

Wood Paneling Painting Guide

Friday, July 27th, 2018

You gotta love those wood paneling on the walls of this Protege Dining Room.

Wood paneling is absolutely back in style especially for those who are embracing the Mid-century modern look in their homes. This throwback appeal is a huge thing these days and if you’ve decided to jump to the bandwagon, then you’re onto something amazing.

If you’re starting a love affair with teak and oak, then this is the perfect set of guidelines to help you especially when you’re considering what to do with your wall paneling.

Wood paneling can absolutely alter your home’s interior design as well as your life. Painting on wood may not be a welcome idea for most men but many designers have been breaking free from this caged notion.

Have a little vision. Look beyond those wood finish and see the possibilities that come with a fresh coat of paint.

Time to Paint

There is no value in outdated wood paneling. But if they’re brand new and you’ve just installed, them, then painting them is still an awesome idea. Here are the materials and tools that you will need –

Water and soap

220-grit sandpaper

Interior latex paint

Multi-purpose primer sealer

3/8” roller cover

Paintbrush

Paint roller and roller tray

And here is the procedure –

  • Here’s the first thing that you need to do and decide on – whether you are really decided to paint the wood paneling. Once it’s painted, of course, you’re gonna have to live with the look. So be very sure that painted wood paneling is what you really want.
  • Check if the paneling that you have in your home is really made of wood. There are some which are just a photo of wood grains that are merely glued to the surface of a plywood or even a composite type of board.

This kind of paneling cannot be painted. But if you’ve tested the paneling in your home and they are authentic wood, then do a test patch first. This will show you just how the paint will eventually look.

If you believe that the paint won’t last, then just don’t do it. But if what you have is a regular room with regular people and not a movie house, then the paint should be good.

  • Free the paneling from dirt or oil. Use a mild detergent with water to wash the paneling. The best kind to use is a dishwashing detergent. As soon as the walls have dried up, use the sandpaper to sand down the paneling.

To make the job easier, use a pole sandpaper. As soon as you’re done sanding, wipe off the dust using a damp cloth then prime the paneling.

  • Paint the paneling just as you would a normal wall. Mask off the baseboards, ceiling, and trim. Using a brush, cut in the edges and then roll on the blocking primer. Use the 3/8” roller cover.
  • Allow the paint to dry completely for no less than 24 hours. You can then paint on the paneling using an interior latex paint. You can also use a satin finish for a more durable task.
  • Paint just like the task that you did with the primer. Cut the edges using a brush then roll on the paint.
  • Here is a little trick, as soon as you’re done rolling a small section, pick that wide 4” brush then use it from ceiling to floor with long strokes.
  • Again, dry thoroughly before adding your second coat of paint.

Remember that the grooves will remain the same till you fill them. Have them filled with spackling compound. You can also use a drywall compound. Let this compound dry before you begin sanding. You can also choose not to sand if you want a wall with texture.
