Trilby Desk from Fine Furniture Design’s Portfolio Collection
Each year, there is always a talk on what trends and themes are going to be the dominant ones. This is true when it comes to fashion and interior design. Unlike fashion, though, trends are easily sidetracked. Trends can only become the standard or norms if they are seen by fashion influencers as something that is timeless.
In the 1950s, there appeared a theme in fashion that shocked the entire fashion industry. Brutalism came into being then and it drove away a lot of people. It was seen as something to be feared because it was different. Not a lot of people were bold or brave enough to use brutalism to stylize.
Rewind to the 1300s, when the Renaissance was able to bridge the huge gap between the religious yet gory Middle Ages and modern history. Shortly thereafter, Rococo and Baroque were born and history went on to record their significant, life-altering trends that they came to be.
Trend or Timeless?
When talking about the word trend, it would seem that people are talking about fashion all of the time. But now, there is a lot more to this word than just clothes, bags or shoes.
Trend is more particularly about colors, patterns, materials, and forms which are also elements of interior design. As the seasons change, so do the collections, and then you wonder how quickly the looks can change.
When talking about interior design trends, always ask yourself about the prevailing trends in fashion as well. These two are inseparable.
Interior designers always tell their clients to make a curated space where they feel they belong. This must be a space that they can comfortably call their home. An interior design should be enjoyable for the homeowner, and it must also be sophisticated, timeless, elegant, and with a dash of customized areas just to prove the homeowner’s ownership of that house.
The theme in the hospitality industry is a tad different, though. Hotels have major changes every decade or so or they would be outdated. The hotel industry thrives on a person’s experience and journey. They want to make an impression that their rooms or suites are the perfect spots to hold staycations.
These are supposed to be hideaways, a haven, and a place where there is respite from the busy goings-on of their lives.
A fashionable interior design must always begin with the right architectural elements. You should also be able to see the culture that sits in the background. As for the furniture, the pieces should be able to tell the style as well as the period when from whence they came.
The lighting must also be done so that what needs to be highlighted is properly emphasized while those that need to recede into the background should stay there.
Interior Design Trends for 2018
This year is the time to love purple. Pantone’s Color of the Year is Ultra Violet which is bold and interesting. It is never boring, it is meant to say, hello, I am here, see me!
The worlds of interior design and fashion are forever fused so pick an idea or two from the designs that you see on clothing and shoes.
Use bold reds, greens, and blues, too. These will outshine the neutrals of the past years. This is the year to test the boundaries in terms of colors. Be bold, be daring, go for statement pieces.
Don’t be afraid to mix dark finishes. Give brass a moment to come back this year as it boldly outstages rose gold. Mix metal finishes in the kitchen as well as the bathroom. Just remember to pick the dominant metal to use throughout the house as accents.

Tommy Bahama Home Bedroom Red Coral Chest 559-624 comes in a hot, trendy color.
The Fashion Week is an event when designers, models, bloggers and celebrities all gather and brave the freezing temperatures of New York just to attend the famed fashion event. This is no longer an event solely for the fashion circle but also a happening that affects many other industries.
Designers now cross over to the world of interior and furniture design. The likes of Paul Smith and Diane Von Furstenburg have fashion and home collections to be proud of. They are no longer just artists that fill the runway shows but artisans in their own right.
The interior design industry welcomes these artists with wide, open arms. There is so much anticipation as there is an ever-increasing media pattern that focuses on design visibility.
Fusion of Art and Interior Design
One can find a perfect marriage in fashion and art. Fashion icons Mary Ping, Susa Cianciolo and Eckhaus Latta are featured in runway shows as well as the MoMa or Museum of Modern Art. Theirs are art forms that have outgrown the usual glitz and glamour offered by the klieg lights of the runways and are now being featured in spaces that serious art lovers go to.
There is a very thin line between vintage and contemporary design in these artists’ works as all art forms merge and interplay. So, yes, it’s not all about wardrobe anymore but how to carry over their creations from the runway to the different homes that they can dress up.
Fashion and interior design are forever interlocked. Decades ago, there was a determined degree of separation between the two. This was evident when, a few years back, Philippe Starck collaborated with a famous Italian cashmere company. Missoni also began building hotels just as Zac Posen began to design interiors for 16w21 condos.
The trend, these days, is leaning towards throwbacks. Decorative fabrics are hot as are fashionable pieces during the 18th century. There are practices and principles of design that are in play, too, during furniture creation. Just like an ensemble of clothing, the determination of a focal point, harmony, and creating silhouettes are practices in the interior design industry that are not foreign to fashion designers.
Interior designers, in fact, should work like fashion designers. Materials have to be carefully chosen, experimented on at times, and then designed to a piece that is so inspirational that you could read a story just by looking at the design.
There is a reason why fashion designers are no longer interested in just supermodels and clothing. They are, in essence, spreading their wings to the call of clients and other industries (e.g. the hotel industry). Jean-Paul Gaultier understood this when he collaborated with Roche Bobois, maker of contemporary furniture.
Every fashion collection produces different interpretations in interior design. The blue and white sailor stripes are quite famous in both worlds. These are increasingly becoming the sexiest color on furniture, too.
Fashion designers think hard and are constantly looking for inspiration when designing their pieces. Such is also the case when they move to the world of interior design. On the latter, they dress up furniture and homes. Drawings of dresses now become drafts for furnishings.
There are also some fashion designers who are coming up with their limited edition of furniture line. The pieces range from wine racks, to console tables, even cushions and lampshades. There are just too many pieces to gape at.
Fashion is loved in many parts of the world. Civilized people rarely thrive without it which is why carrying it over to another artistic industry is just right. Fashion is a lot more than just a piece of clothing. These days, it can be that winding staircase in your friend’s home or that next furniture collection that you’re going to invest in.

Cynthia Rowley has been making waves in the fashion industry for the longest time. And now, she’s out to conquer another dimension that is relative to what she’s already dominated. Before you get to know the beautiful, new creations that she has done, let’s take a look at Cynthia Rowley – the person.
Biography
Cynthia Rowley was born on the 29th of July in 1958. She’s one of the finest New York West Village designers. She’s a native of Illinois, born to Clementine and Ed Rowley. She was a graduate of Barrington High School back in 1976. She completed her education at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago in 1981.
Cynthia’s business life began when she ventured with the $3,000 given to her by her grandmother. Her name became an icon in just a short time. By 1988, she began to create handbags, eyewear, women’s wear, shoes, leggings, belts, cosmetic hats, and fragrances.
Ten years later, Cynthia Rowley also became a brand name for the latest menswear together with a secondary women’s clothing collection. By 2003, Illene Rosenweig, The New York Times reporter and also a good friend of Cynthia’s, joined hands with the iconic fashion designer to create the Swell home accessory line.
Cynthia was also later commissioned to design the uniforms of pilots and flight attendants, ramp servicers, as well as maintenance workers from the United Airlines. This was in 2009 and in 2011, she launched her impressive eyewear collection named after Bill Powers, her husband. Tagged Mr. Powers, her eyewear collection swept the fashion industry in complete awe.
Roxy, Target, Band-Aid and Half Gallery soon partnered with this phenomenal designer.
A Life of Fashion and Passion
Cynthia Rowley’s works could not be kept hidden. They were things of beauty, hence, they had to be displayed and enjoyed. Her fashion masterpieces were featured twice every year during the NY Fashion Week. She has also set up stores in Taiwan, Japan, Hongkong, Boston, East Hampton, Charleston, Chicago, New York and other specialty shops all over the U.S. and abroad. Her company now also has its own commercial website.
Cynthia got the Perry Ellis Award once in 1994 when she was awarded the New Fashion Talent award. She was also nominated once for her menswear collection.
Being an icon in fashion, she was inevitably invited to act as a judge in the 24 Hour Catwalk, a reality TV show. She also guested in The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Cynthia has also co-authored books such as Home Swell Home, The Swell Dressed Party, Swell Holiday, and Slim: A Fantasy Memoir.
Cynthia Rowley is an artist at heart which is why she has a huge collection of contemporary art. Art is what inspires her to design. Her other inspirations include her family, music, movies and places that she has already visited. She may have begun with sewing but she eventually coupled this with her passion for fine arts. Her hands followed what her creative mind dictated. At first, she created a wall against anything that the world produced but soon enough, she started looking at other insightful things.
The Furniture Crossover
Cynthia Rowley has proven so much when it comes to fashion but now, she wants to share more of her talent. She recently crossed over to the furniture business. Her newest collection, as expected, doesn’t disappoint. You will surely be blown away by the unique living room, bedroom and home office pieces.
She may not have envisioned this happening years ago when she first became a Fine Arts student bent on becoming a painter. Thanks to her discoverer from a top department store, the world may not have seen the beautiful things that Cynthia Rowley could offer.
