Have you read about the design theory? Do you want to? It is the statement of the all too important principles of design. It has also been interpreted in a lot of ways but that’s not what you’re about to learn. There is one thing about this theory that is not difficult to comprehend – the rule of three.
Did you know that the eyes acclimate instantly to groupings of three? This is why you would typically find this rule applied to web design, photography, and art. This rule, when applied in designing or decorating any room in your home, would result in a space that’s inviting yet polished.
Designing by the Number
While open space layouts and open palettes are quite the in things these days, but quite frankly, there are certain rules to follow if you want your design to stand out. The correct and perfect interior design can be created by the rule of three.
This design principle can affect any room that you use it in. It is the rule that will dictate the size, layout, as well as the shapes of objects that will be placed therein. Even the colors and patterns that will be used in the rooms are dependent upon this rule.
You have probably seen this concept in magazines, photographs, and even in PowerPoint presentations in your office but you might not have paid much attention to it. Yet this is the rule that can expand as it represents an odd number – the number 3.
Even in Feng Shui, the rule of three is known to create more energy while the even numbers are said to condense the space.
Infusing your home with more energy, therefore, means you have to follow this rule. So why three?
Just imagine a room with each of the design elements having five pieces. That’s like being in a cluttered space. The human brain can only process so much that it can best take in three design elements at a time.
Think of your mind as a space where puzzles are solved. The number three is the very point of balance and so when your brain sees it, it stops resisting and it even tends to understand right away.
Applying this concept all begins with color. You can start with a big area filled with the accent piece such as a single wall or a colorful sofa. You can then design further by adding two more elements in the same color but of varying grades.
When it comes to size, the Rule of Three can be applied to the girth and height. Don’t think that you need to decorate with three uniform vases, though. On the contrary, it becomes more visually interesting if you decorate with vases of varying sizes.
As to the shape or size, the logic of this rule applies to the pillows that you place on your plush sofa or the way that you arrange the bookshelf. Even the layout of your kitchen lighting can pretty much sum up the logic behind The Rule of Three.
The Challenging Living Room
The living room is the very area where you first welcome your guests. This room can either make or break these people’s experience. You, therefore, need to balance the design elements in the room so that your guests and even your family member would feel more relaxed in that room.
Use the coffee table to balance the room that’s already filled with the couch and some chairs. This furniture will then become the third element and not literally the third piece. But, remember to still group in threes just so the eyes would still understand the concept.
You could also add three textures. Dress up the couch using pillows and blankets. Here, you can use the Rule of Three yet again. Match the woven throw with a lumbar pillow and then finish the look with a large throw covered in fleece.
