How Interior Design Evolved

Interior design, when viewed as a profession, has just been around for a little over a hundred years. Within these years, it began as an art of decorating. It then slowly embraced elements such as function and form. Since its beginnings, it has leaped to the specializations of today’s styles. In fact, from art, it became mathematical and scientific in some aspects as more and more people studied interior design.

Long before the term interior decorator was used in the U.S., many decorators did not even have any academic credentials. Those who designed and decorated homes had good taste, though. These people were instinctively talented and they had a good dose of common sense.

Elsie de Wolfe was the first one to be commissioned as an interior decorator. By 1913, she already published her interior design book called The House in Good Taste. The first design firm was established in 1923 by Dorothy Draper.

While all these took place practically a century ago, interior design is not new. It definitely started long, long before.

Interior Design Requirements

As mentioned, those who took on interior decorating projects initially were those who had a good taste in terms of form and style.

Interior design does not center on fabrics only or on fine furnishing. It also involves space, color, form, balance, harmony, and many other elements. These days, it even includes sustainability and efficiency.

Interior Design Evolution

The evolution of interior designing is quite an adventure to read.  From the 20th century Victorian style consisting of heavy draperies, ornate pieces, and dark-colored features, the world is now welcome with streamlined pieces, the glimmer of polished metals, and even the open space concept.

But if you really want to learn the birth of interior design, then you have to read about Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, the Chinese, and many other ancient civilizations. The most beautiful gold ornaments have been unearthed in Egyptian tombs. The Greeks and the Romans were great at accessorizing.

Design trends are keeping up with the changes that are happening in the world – and no one can stop this. It is important for interior design to change in accordance to the era in which it sits. These days, the interior design solutions come in a plethora of styles, both traditional and contemporary.

So what drives these changes apart from the events that happen all around humankind?

The options for design are vast because people are now more well-informed. Many also choose to travel, hence, they have seen different cultures with their own eyes. There are also many decorating shows on cable TV, just as there are many interior design websites and magazines.

People these days are more appreciative of color, shapes, patterns, and textures. Tiled flooring has evolved to terrazzo and porcelain. Artwork is also more widely used now because, as the saying goes – a picture is worth a thousand words. These words welcome guests to many homes and they convey many feelings.

The demand for furnishings is also greater these days. Even pharmacies are now selling furniture as prescription items. Furniture shops have now raised the bar when it comes to function and aesthetics.

If you want to become a professional interior designer, then you have to know your options. According to the BLS or the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an interior design program often takes 2-3 years to finish. This would give you an associate degree. Bachelor’s degrees are also available, inquire in schools such as – The Berkeley College, New England Institute of Technology in Rhode Island, and The Art Institutes System of Schools in Oregon, North Carolina, and Florida.
