The Family Friendly Family Room

Wednesday, December 26th, 2018

Increase the level of comfort in the family room by adding the Jessica Charles Living Room Deana Chaise 365.

The end of the Second World War was a moment mourned throughout the world. War veterans went back home, families cried over their lost loved ones, and they, together with the rest of the world’s population treaded on to get out of the Great Depression. At the time, the middle class started to rise and the demand for family rooms increased.

Family rooms became the embodiment of casual living as it offered space that’s meant for relaxation and family bonding. Those who clamored for family room wanted one that was utopic and one that strayed from the class lines. This was, after all, a room that lacked the formality of the traditional living room or parlor.

The Function of a Family Room

The family room’s purpose was not clear at first, as it seemed to focus only on leisure. But pretty soon, it became necessary for this room to become multifunctional. First, wives began asking for a separate spot for their household chores and the place where their family members gathered.

Living room became a space for entertainment and display and the humble family room became the zone where members of the family could let their hair down, so to speak.

But what’s the huge difference between the living room and the family room?

As early as the 17th century, guests were welcomed in living rooms. There are now more homes with more relaxed living rooms but there are still homes – especially the larger ones – where they are still formal. Others even refer to it as a grand living room.

The family room is similar to the living room because it’s also a place where the family gathers. This can be a place for relaxation and they tend to be kid-friendly.

Family Room Essentials

It is not a secret that family rooms can be a challenge to set up. No matter how simple the concept or theme in this room may be, it could get taxing setting it up especially when you have no idea where to begin.

So to help you on your endeavor here are the essentials that every family room needs –

Lots of seating. Be sure to set up ample comfortable seats for every family member plus some guests who could suddenly pay a visit. Try setting up a sectional if you have limited space to work with. Comfy pillows would also come in handy.

Warmth. And what’s a family room without a warm glow of fire in the evenings? That traditional wood fireplace, electric or gas units would all provide the warmth that you need in this room.

Comfy underfoot. A soft area rug or carpet is a must-have for every family room. Just imagine relaxing your feet on the carpet or rug while you gather during the evenings to share stories.

Lovely hues. Choose a color that’s relaxing to everyone’s eyes. Find out how to fill up the space with the palette that you pick. Greens and blues are the most relaxing while oranges and yellows are energy inducing.

Television. Plan a spot for your TV set. Find an entertainment set that will hold your TV along with your other entertainment gadgets and equipment. Leave some room for the DVD player, your DVD collection, speakers, and other equipment.

A place for everything. Make sure that there aren’t only shelves and drawers but more storage spaces for your books, game boards, magazines, and CDs. These should not be stored insomuch that they can no longer be accessed when they are needed.

And talk of out of reach, you should also have a shelf that’s high enough for your breakable accents to be placed on. Your little ones must not be able to reach this level easily.

‘Thinking of displaying old and memorable family photographs onto your walls? There is no easy way in doing that. Pictures that have been taken during varying occasions in people’s lives using different cameras are a great way to liven up walls. Different kinds of technology pose different challenges when it comes to posting them.

Family photographs, having come from different eras often do not match. Some photos could still be in black and white while most could already be in color. There is also the added task of framing the photos in ways that would emphasize their beauty.

How – exactly – would you frame and eventually display photos in style?

Plan

Family photographs must be enjoyed at eye level. So go ahead and take a pencil and mark the spots where you are supposed to hang the photographs. Use painter’s tape if you need a more visible approach in marking the walls. For some, this could even be used to make the photographs stick to the wall.Just as you would any endeavor, you must plan your photo arrangements. Who would want to punch a multitude of nails into the walls, right? If you are still renting, then your landlord will surely thank you for taking care of the walls.

You must also decide which walls will become the informal photo gallery. Of course, you can’t just pepper the walls with uncoordinated photographs so decide which wall you would use from the onset. Hallways, stairways and bedrooms are popular areas.

Decide also whether you would want the photographs to be hung symmetrically or asymmetrically. Whichever you choose, there should always be a unified look for all the photographs.

Create a Story

When planning on how to display the family photos on your walls, consider telling a story. We may already be living on the digital era but we still want to display the things representing people whom we love most.

The family photographs could turn a sterile wall into something more welcoming. Tell that story when you went on your first trip to Paris. Hang those right in the middle of the living room. When in the kitchen, consider displaying the photographs of the whole family eating at a seafood restaurant.

Be imaginative. You can have this as a DIY weekend project for the entire family or you could choose to hire a professional. You may think that it’s too much to hire a professional just to hang old family photos but – keep in mind that – putting up framed photos haphazardly on your walls is just like allowing junk to be displayed.

Family photographs have to be coordinated whether by story, color, size or pattern. Even an asymmetrical display will look nice when there is a single concept that unifies all of the framed memories. And who says one can’t use an abstract concept in hanging photos on walls?

How about using time-tested concepts in displaying memories? Sometimes, hanging pictures is as easy as using cool thumbtacks to affix the photos right onto the walls. The colorful thumbtacks could even become a part of the art.

Hanging vintage frames is best done by having them at an equal distance from each other. If you already have a wide variety of photo frames or have collected a good number of professionally-framed ones, then have them hung artistically, meaning, it’s up to you if you want them perfectly aligned or unbalanced. Art, after all, depends on the perception of its creator.

Add or Swap

Your family might have a great collection of memorable photographs now but your history isn’t finished yet. More occasions will be celebrated and more family members will be added. As your family grows and even changes, keep adding or swapping the photos on the walls.
