Personal Touch: Turning a House Into a Home

Monday, December 4th, 2017

This room would have been cold without the warmth and contrasting effects of the lamps, the unique vase on the nightstand, and the bowl of magazines. Featured here is the Constance King Sleigh Bed from Fine Furniture Design’s Meritage Collection.

Having a one-of-a-kind home does not mean buying the latest appliances or adding heavy wood furniture at every corner. While furniture and appliances can help make a place appear cozy, there is a much better way to achieve a unique look – add personal touches.

You just have to add personal touches if you want to make your house feel like a home. You can even tell stories as you display your collections. Other than showing the world your book or action figure collections, here are other things that can help customize your dwelling place –

Personalized Lettering

There are now a lot of shops that offer personalized vinyl lettering for your signs, sayings, and monograms. You can now place your favorite quote to welcome your visitors at your main door.

Dashes and Splashes of Color

What’s your favorite color? Use that to anchor the rest of your design elements. This can also serve as the color for your accent wall. If you don’t want purple splashed all across the walls of your living room, then use it as an accent hue instead.

Create a statement by adding a colorful piece of furniture. If you have a neutral-colored backdrop and furnishings, then add colorful throws to offset the muted palette. Remember that the right addition of color can tie your style together effectively.

Eclectic Art

Find an artwork that speaks to you and display that in a prominent area. The artwork must not just make you happy but also capture the imagination of other beholders.

If you’re still not sure where to begin, try looking for prints of the best global holiday destinations, preferably the ones that you have already visited. Have you kept your pictures in Paris? Then it’s time to look for art pieces that are connected to this expedition.

Motivational quotes can also jumpstart your personalization project.

Candles and Tealights

Candles have always been the go-to element when it comes to romanticizing a place. Apart from these, there are also tea lights which come in small tin cans which can burn for 3-5 hours.

Scented and uniquely-shaped candles will look particularly charming during this holiday season. Have some stunning candle holders display your selection of tea lights. Even citrus peelings, eggshells, green or red apples, glued pistachio shells, and a small stump of wood, can serve as candle holders for your cute tea lights.

Memorabilia

Most of the time, it is a challenge to infuse your collection into an existing theme in your home. If you don’t want your collectibles to turn into clutter, then you need to know how to properly display them. First, have a memory table set up at the center of the living room right where the center table is supposed to go. You can also arrange your collection on an open shelf according to finishes and sizes. Create depth as you combine according to color or thickness.

Does your son have a huge collection of matchbox toys? How about coaxing him to have those cars displayed on the wall? Set up a matchbox car mural right where he can see them every day as he eats his cereal.

Do you have quilted works? Then have them displayed right by the door of your living room. Use a short ladder to hang the different-patterned quilts.

What about those people who love to collect lunch boxes? Just like the matchbox mural, you can also create an accent wall using a tall shelf for your lunch box collectibles. This can be done as a floor-to-ceiling kind of display or just a dedicated section of the wall.

You see, there are so many ways to personalize your home. The limit is only that of what’s conceived in your mind.

Do you believe that accessories are keys to a good design? These may or may not be the focal points in a room but they always get their fair share of attention. So who gets to choose the kind of accessories in your home?

Accessories Aren’t an Afterthought

Accessories are essential elements that must always be included in styling a room. These are especially important if you have to show your personal flair through your design. Whether you are designing your home or redecorating, you would want something that could freshen up your space. Since this is so, do not forget to accessorize.

Love Your Accessories

Always look for accessories that speak of who you are or your interests. Remember that you are going to live with these items for months or years to come so be sure to find the ones that you would enjoy seeing every day. These pieces don’t have to be expensive but they should be interesting in terms of color, shape and texture.

Accessories are also, sometimes, things with sentimental value. These are those items that have a great story behind them. They are interesting because they are visually fascinating or they have the power to define what you want for your space.

Arts are great pieces of accessories. These are conversational pieces that are pretty hard to ignore.

Accessories Have Purpose

It is wrong to think that accessories are just there as decorative elements. These can serve purposes, too. Examples are vases filled with fresh water and freshly-cut flowers. Still on plants, potted plants don’t just work well with the existing color scheme but they can also add texture as well as clean the air. Accessories can also be that special bowl of candies and nuts on your dining table.

Lamps aren’t just visually charming but they can also provide necessary lighting for your space. Sometimes, the simplest function for an accessory is to fulfill a basic purpose. A throw blanket does not just add visual texture and color but it can also keep you warm during those extra chilly evenings.

Group Your Accessories

Accessories, more often than not, make a greater impact once you display them in a group. Dispersed accessories have a diminished significance. There is power in numbers so use this concept in creating the most interesting arrangements.

An example is when you decorate your end table or coffee table. Be sure to use various sizes and heights of accessories. Include colorful items such as flowers or interesting photo frames.

Art can also be grouped to showcase a collection. Remember that grouping provides a cohesive look that would never be achieved when the pieces can be found everywhere in the room.

Accessories Should Harmonize

Just like the rest of the design elements, the accessories that you use must be able to harmonize with the rest.  Balance is the chief component in picking any design element. For instance, a vintage grandfather clock will not look too great on a narrow entryway. Smaller accessories should be used in such an instance.

Another way to bring balance in a room is to utilize elements that naturally bond. Rooms with high ceilings are often married with beautiful crystal chandeliers.

Shop for the bigger items first like lamps, decorative boxes, vases, and artworks; these tend to occupy more space so they should be the anchors in terms of creating balance.

Accessories Are Finishing Touches

Interior design might become monotonous without the right finishing touches. Form, function and creating a lovely space is all about harmony yet there would always be the need to include the applicable finishing touch. This is the icing to the cake so make sure to accessorize or you’d be missing out on the most interesting part of your design project.

BLOG 2. 1586-75907-GRY1 Soiree Sideboard 1586-90007-MULTI Aura Round Shell Accent Mirror

The use of this 1586-75907-GRY1 Soiree Sideboard 1586-90007-MULTI Aura Round Shell Accent Mirror is an effective method to customize your home.

Buying home in today’s market entails a lot of hard work. After being stressed in financing and closing the deal, the next big project is for you to move in. One of the greatest joys of home ownership is your right to finally personalize the space and let it suit your preferences. Here are some strategies that could help you customize your home –

Customize with Paint

Painting your home with the colors that you want is a cost-effective way of personalizing your space. Studies even show that your color choices can have a massive impact on your mood, even the general well-being of the residents.

You can paint the exterior parts to create or update the look of your home. You can paint your home the way you have always imagined your dream home would look like. You can paint for the sole reason of improving curb appeal.

You can also paint the front door, the fence and shutters with colors that match the rest of the neighborhood or a palette that defines the unique you. A red door is considered to be most welcoming. Adding an engraved knocker will also up the personalized look on that door; while greens and aquas, even brick reds and blacks are great for a unique fence.

As for the shutters, you can go ahead and paint them with a palette that beautifully contrasts the rest of the colors already used. This tweak should give your home a buttoned up look.

Individual family members can also have their pick at the colors that they would want to add in the different rooms. The kids’ room could be personalized with cartoon character or farm animal murals. The master bedroom, on the other hand, could be wallpapered or painted with a color that spells sanctuary.

If you want to make a statement by using color, then what better way is there than to add an accent wall? An accent wall – that single wall that has a different color from the rest of the walls – is also an easy yet effective way of personalizing your space.

Match or Not

There is no hard and fast rule that says table and chairs should always match. Remember that in customizing your home – you are in control. So take charge and bring in furniture that makes you happy.

You can also switch rooms if you want to dine inside the kitchen or even a small section of the living room. Just add a breakfast nook right by the living room window and you’re done.

The master bedroom could also be the best yoga room or a home for your shoes, bags and other accessories. How about doubling the home office into an arts and craft room? You can then do your office work while your teenage daughter is right in the same room, scrapbooking.

Personalize with a Chart

It would help if you plan the execution of your design goals. You can divide the spaces in your home, even the seemingly useless spaces, then see what functions they could serve. Even that nook under the stairs can have a function.

After listing these areas, decide what you are going to do with each. It would also help if you assign the storage spaces from the onset. Plan where you will set up the cabinets, shelves and drawers. See also if you can have a storage space set up in your window seats. The spinners, shelves and drawers in the kitchen must also be optimized.

This kind of planning should empower you to make sure that every activity is met and that every family member’s needs are considered.

Do you remember your first thoughts when you took your first step into your new home? It is but natural that you would want to put a personal stamp in this new space, more so if this is your dream home. If this house was pre-loved, then the walls, finishes and fixtures were probably chosen by the previous owner. So where should you begin when you want to personalize your new home?

Personalize by Painting the Door

Painting the front door is non-committal task compared to painting the exterior right away. While you’re picking a new paint color, see also if you would like to update the structure as well. This might not change the outer appearance but it could up other factors such as safety in the case of changed locks.

Changing the faucets and showerheads will also help. Most of these have probably seen better days so it is best to swap them for sleeker ones.

Personalize by Painting a Wall or Two

Beginning by painting the entire house can be a daunting decision to make. So, if you’re still uncertain, just paint a wall or two. Again, this is not a commitment. Painting a single wall will bring you with a beautiful accent wall. Paint this accent wall with your favorite color so the house would feel more like you.

Personalize by Hanging Photos

Get some of your favorite photos and hang them on the wall. This is the easiest way that you could make a new house feel like home. If you aren’t sure about drilling holes into the walls just yet, then use some removable strips instead of nails.

Personalize by Bringing Nature In

Do you love nature? Then go ahead and bring in a bouquet of fresh flowers. Whether this came from your own backyard or the grocery, it has the power to instantly alter the room and make it look friendlier. Have the same flower species arranged in different bud vases then have them displayed throughout the house.

If you’re allergic to pollen, then you could also bring in some potted green plant. It would have the same effect as the flowers in vases.

Personalize with Wallpaper

Begin this wallpaper project with the powder room. A statement wallpaper will be able to put a stamp on the bath or the powder room. These are spaces that have less foot traffic so they are the perfect experiment space for bolder patterns and colors.

A word of caution: Make sure that you use wallpaper that can withstand humidity inside the bathroom.

Personalize with a Rug

Even when you think bare floor is the best choice, have at least a single space decorated with a lovely rug. This should make the house feel a little more comfortable and lived-in. if you’re not a huge fan of cleaning up rugs, then put them away from heavy foot traffic areas.

Personalize by Decluttering

Use the power of scent to personalize your home. There are many great-smelling products which you can clean your home with. This scent should be a familiar scent to you so that the place would feel more like home.

Personalize with Lighting

You can swap the boring and outdated lighting fixture for a more stylish and updated one. Find places that could use some overhead fixtures then have a professional electrician install them. Don’t live with inconveniences, you have to fix ‘em. Remember that the expense you might shell out now will pay dividends in the years that you won’t have to worry about lighting repairs.

Now that you’ve moved into your new home, try these simple remodeling projects and you’d soon feel that the place is a lot more familiar.
