Santana Accent Table by Humphrey Bogart

Matching or symmetrical sets of furniture have the power to make a room look sharp. While this is so, there is no rule that says furniture pieces have to match every single time. Changing a few elements may contrast with what’s widely accepted but it will definitely add a delicious texture to the room, one that will showcase your personality and style.

A furniture piece that is most suitable to do this job is the accent table. This living room table can serve various functions. It can become your stylish side table that is home to your table lamps. Or it can simply hold remote controls and magazines.

There is a wide array of accent table sizes, styles, colors, and shapes to choose from. Find the right piece that will enhance your home.

Mix and Match by Material

If you want an accent table made of wood, then don’t hesitate to blend different sorts of wood and wood finishes. Teak, oak, ash, mango, and many other types of wood come in different hues, pattern, and style.

Combine these to set up a mix and match that’s organic. The woods’ different grains and tones add visual texture and character. Just be sure to pay attention to the undertones of the woods.

Blending works best if you stick to a single tone (warm or cool).

When mixing metals, never feel restricted to just a single type of hardware. Different metals can co-exist. They can even be mixed with wood. For instance, a wooden accent table could have bronze details. This is a wonderful combination of warm and cool hues.

Mix and Match by Shape

There are many shapes available for accent tables. Try teaming up a round accent table with a rectangular, elongated coffee table. You can also have a center table framed by a few similarly shaped yet smaller accent tables.

If space is a problem, then be sure to look for accent tables that come with lower shelves or drawers. These added storage spaces will hold remote controls, keys, books, and other items. The added shelves can also showcase magazines and some of your collections.

Ways to Decorate Accent Tables

What is an accent table without the proper decorative stuff to beautify it with?  This task can be a bit tricky but with a little creativity and patience, you can breeze through it.

Here’s one easy way to begin – add a basket (preferably rattan) to your accent table. This will hold your keys, TV remote, and even other decorative items.

Books can also easily become decorative items. Find the ones that you love to read regularly. Add a low stack in place of the rattan basket.

If these ideas don’t tickle your fancy, then you can always go for flower (faux or fresh). These products of Mother Nature are a lovely way to decorate your accent table. A vase of orchids, perhaps, can sit on your table for 2-3 days.

If you change the water daily, the flowers could even stay fresh longer. If you want to have a more dramatic setup, then place a tall vase with fresh flowers. Blooming branches are also a welcome sight.

Add a table lamp. If you have two accent tables that act as end tables in your living room, then set up a pair of decorative table lamps.

Make sure that you don’t place the accent table anywhere near a staircase because there is a tendency for the table lamps to be toppled over.

FFDM Summer Home Collection’s Accent Cabinet

Accent furniture is that piece that stands as it beautifully complements a room and its contents. This term is in reference to this furniture’s role which is to emphasize or stress something. If you have a furniture piece that is more than functional, then it can be referred to as accent furniture.

Accent furniture is almost always a decorative piece, too. There are even some homeowners who do not have a practical need for some pieces in their home, yet, they invest in them because they excite their senses and the pieces’ accent color is just too difficult to ignore.

When you are considering the kind of accent piece that you would finally take home, you must think of ways to go about with this decision. You must prepare to invest if you to achieve a home that delights.

Begin with the Entryway

Remember that the entry sort of sets the tone for your home. This is, therefore, the best place to first use an accent piece. An accent chest, for example, is a wonderful piece to begin with. Any piece that is gilded, painted or has ornate art will also work well.

Find a chest that has a bold color or one that has an interesting geometric shape.

Accentuate with Tiny Tables

Find small tables as they are one of the greatest pieces to accentuate a space. Find pieces that are inlaid, painted or uses unconventional materials. Pieces with bold hues or lines are also amazing choices. Be sure to pick tables for their unique look.

Use these tables anywhere in your place from the bedroom, dining room, living room to the kitchen.

Go Large and Bold

Accent pieces may also be huge and imposing depending on what piece you need in a space. An armoire can be the co-star inside the bedroom. The china cabinet can take center stage inside the dining room. The busiest home office can have an executive desk.

If the rest of your furnishings are muted, then you can freely look for an imposing, ornate piece.

The dining table is a natural accent furniture. Pick a table that grabs your attention because of its color, materials or finish. There are many styles and sizes to choose from. Find the piece that complements the other dining room pieces.

Chair with Style

Chairs are also wonderful accent pieces – at least the right pieces are. When you pick an accent piece, again, this has to have a bold profile. It can also have a unique upholstery or color.

The accent chair can also be the perfect contrast for your other furnishings. Having two different styles in one room can have awesome results. Traditional furnishings, for instance, can find a breath of fresh air in a contemporary chair. You could also go the other way around where the rest of the design is contemporary while the accent chair is a historic looking piece.

Tips in Choosing Accent Pieces

Now that you know that not all furniture pieces are meant just to function, here are some tips in choosing the versatile pieces that will make your house a home –

  • Remember your personality. To add a pop of color, you might as well make a statement with the hue that you like the most.
  • An accent furniture can also be used as a storage unit. Inside the ottoman can be a place for your magazines and books. The accent chest can also be a place to tuck your shoes.
  • Spruce up a nook or corner with an interesting accent furniture. With it, you can say goodbye to awkward corners.

If you’re still thinking that you need an artwork or a lamp to complete the look of any room, then you’re still believing a misconception. Both are, of course, still wonderful choices that can make a room stand out yet the same concept can be fulfilled by another kind of table. An accent table is any functional and mobile accessory table that can be used in any type of home.

There are many different kinds of accent tables so you won’t have to worry if something would suit your style or taste. The most common that people have heard is the end table. This can be used when setting down for a drink or when you’re about to relax and read a book. It can also be the table where you can place a light snack for some guests.

Another type is the coffee table. This is much lower and closer to the ground compared to the end table. This is an accent table that was designed to be paired with a couch or a chair. This is also the perfect spot to place your remote control and some keys.

The console table is also popularly called as a hall accent table. This is usually thin and long since it is designed to fit between the wall and a couch. This can be decorated with family photos that have been elegantly framed, purses, keys, mail and a decorative vase.

Accent Table Finishes, Shapes, etc.

Think of every possible finish for any furniture and, most probably, an accent table also has such a finish. The most common materials, though, are glass, wood and metal. A wood accent table is available in different kinds of stains. Choose from espresso, mahogany, black, oak, blonde, walnut, and a lot more.

Glass accent tables rarely come in solid glass. These are often paired with steel or chrome framework in order to achieve a modern look.

The metallic types are also available in different kinds of finishes from oil-rubbed bronze, chrome, to brushed nickel and matte black.

Accent tables are also available in three simple shapes – square, round and abstract. There is also an infinite variety. Take the round variety and it can be stretched to an oval shape. There are also novelty accent tables and stack tables.

If you have ample time to shop around, then do so. There are so many options to look at.

Picking Your Accent Table

As soon as you have defined your accent table requirements, then it’s time to shop for the perfect piece. You can have a collection of coffee tables which you can use to entertain guests. Placing an interesting art piece on your living room accent table could lead to a lot of interesting conversations.

How to Use an Accent Table

An accent table is the right solution in balancing a room’s overall look. It is the perfect piece to complement your other furnishings. Remember, the right console table, coffee table, end table or hallways table can make a huge difference in terms of design.

You can use the accent table in these ways –

  • First, it can be used as a focal point especially when it’s a coffee table.
  • Your end tables can hold interesting knickknacks, collections or a unique lamp. The best end tables can easily complement a lot of furnishings.
  • Accentuate your sofa by using a console table at the back of your seating unit. This can hold a lamp or two and some decorative items.
  • Brighten up any entryway with a colorful hallway table. This can also serve as a storage unit for some important items.
  • A trunk table, that’s used as an accent table, is both a decorative and functional storage piece.
