The Queen Size Bed: Cradle Fit for a Queen

Del Mar Collection’s Bradbury Queen Bed.

By now, you may already know that people spend 30-percent of their lifetime in bed. Since this is so, you might as well make this 30-percent count. The star furniture in a bedroom is the bed so let us make your personality shine through it.

Your bed is, in essence, a personal space. This is not like the dining or living room. There, you have no one to please or show your façade to. In your bed, you are the barest you. With this in mind, you should go ahead and indulge yourself – be a drama queen, be royalty, be a goddess even.

Queen Size in the ‘40s till the ‘60s

The ‘40s was the decade when the bedding industry decided to supersize their mattresses. Of course, if the mattresses grew bigger, then there was also a need to upsize their bedframes.

Primarily, though, Americans slept only in double or twin beds. Once in a while the mattress industry offered dual twin mattresses to their clients. In essence, they were asked for twice the normal purchase.

This idea never flew off.

Midway through the ‘40s, though, manufacturers thought of introducing bigger mattresses. These were later called as king and queen size mattresses. It wasn’t till the ‘50s, though, that the bigger beds finally made an impact on the bedding market.

Retailers made huge money with their bigger mattresses. Each cost $69 to $79 apiece. The rest, as they say, is history as more and more people demanded to have larger mattresses and beds.

The Bedding Magazine once reported that in the 1900s, approximately 4% of adult men in the U.S. were 6 feet or taller. In the late ‘50s, the rate was already at 20% and women were also slowly growing taller.

Bedding makers then looked for allies that would further boost their mattress sales especially the supersize ones. After a sabbatical of a few years, The National Association of Bedding Manufacturers finally reintroduced the Better Sleep Month.

Production ramped up especially during the wars and when the middle class families were slowly attaining a comfortable way of life.

Why a Queen Size Bed?

In the U.S., a queen size bed measures – 60” x 80”. The expanded queen or Olympic queen is at 66” x 80” as well.

The mattress size also measures the same. The ultimate size depends on who will actually sleep on the bed. If one person is going to use it, then it would be best to get a twin or twin XL mattress. If a couple or two persons will sleep in the bed, then use a queen size bed and mattress.

Basically, the queen size mattress provides added width compared to a full size mattress. This adds comfort to the two sleepers mentioned.

The queen size mattress is also the most famous mattress size these days. This is a leading choice for newly-married couples and guest rooms.

The queen size bed comes with a bigger mattress with springs. Just add a few dollars more and you will get the best kind of deep sleep.

What you really need is a queen size bed and smaller automobiles. The latter already has a lot of models. What you just need now is to have a bed that offers both comfortable length and width – especially width if you want to share the bed with a loved one or some family members.

Bigger beds do improve people’s sleep. Imagine sleeping with a person who snores or who pulls on the sheets at night. The bigger the bed, the less chances that your partner will ever disturb your sleep during the night.

So, are you ready to invest in a healthier you?
