Did you know that the terms form and bench can actually be interchanged? Both refer to elongated and backless seating that is made of wood. Back in the day, the bench may have been movable and freestanding – no different than what they also are today.

A bench is the most common seating unit back in those days when chairs were reserved especially for the nobles and the royalty. Now we know why the term chairman is used for the leader or most important person in a group.

The Bench Prototypes

Benches weren’t always stylish. Every type then was basic and simple consisting only of a wooden plank that is supported on both ends by a stretcher or brackets.

Later on, benches were already being made with joined legs. To the people back then, this was an extended joint stool. There is a point where the legs extend past the seat in order to form a back and the sides. This was called the settle.

Just like the bench, a settle may also be freestanding or installed right onto the wall.

The bench can also be an extension of your chests. This can also be used as a seat especially during the years when chairs were already becoming more common.

Whether supported by individual legs or solid ends, the bench can be squared or has splayed supports. The solid ends are made with ogee-shaped outlines. The individualized legs could be chamfered, square or turned.

Wooden benches are also a great choice. These are often crafted with solid and thick legs. This is the kind of bench that can hold a number of people all at once.
