How to Design Around Your Pet Cat

Your feline pet isn’t just a furry friend anymore. These days, she is already considered a member of the family. And since she’s a member of the family, she also has to have her own space where she can play and roam around.

In urban areas that are already densely populated and have very few parks and trees, setting up a home for a feline family member could be a bit more difficult.

Believe it or not, there are now architects who are being commissioned to design homes around a cat. These homes come with spaces where the cat can perch, take a nap, and even move freely about.

Jackson Galaxy, known as TV’s cat whisperer, says that cats are bush or tree dwellers. They are creatures, therefore, that require lots of vertical space. For many homeowners, this is not always easy to set up especially when aesthetics are being considered.

After all, there has to be a balance between the human and cat elements. Here are some tips that can help you achieve this harmonious co-existence with your feline family member –

  • Spacious shelves should be decorated sparsely but tastefully. Shelving is not all about the visuals anymore but also its function in providing a place where the cat can perch or even take its nap. If there’s even more space on the shelf, you can even place a cushion there so little kitty can take a nap there, too.
  • The shelf or cabinet finish must be durable enough to sustain a bit of scratching. The thickness of each layer must not be too obvious as a cat ladder.
  • Conceal a litter tray in a wide cabinet with door. This spot needs to be hidden because cats want to have a little privacy when they’re doing their thing. If you don’t have cat litter, you can always use sand. Sand does not retain the odors of cat urine plus it clumps really well. Add a bit of baking soda to achieve zero odor.
  • Any wiring system must be hidden from your cat. There are now wire wraps that can be bought from home depots. There are also cord management covers that can protect your wires. You can also rub soap on the cable wires so that your cat won’t be tempted to chew on them. Wrapping the cords with a double-sided tape also tends to work.
  • You should also think about setting up a floor fan. This will help your cat cool down on a hot afternoon.
  • Placing an area rug in a particularly cozy spot will induce a curl up from your feline family member. This can also be the perfect spot for her very own designer bed.
  • There are many other ways that you can set up the nooks and crannies so that they become a cat haven. Decorate these spots with cat furnishing and she’s all good.
  • Would you like to see your furry friend in your home office? It would be nice to cuddle this purring pet when you’re feeling overwhelmed by a lot of office work.
  • The colors of your surroundings must also be cat-friendly. They are believed to be trichromats which means they can see blue, red, and green (maybe not in the same manner as humans do but they don’t see in gray nonetheless) so go ahead and create displays in these colors.
  • Lastly, your cat may be domesticated but it is still a cat. It will try to reach zones where it is not supposed to go so be a bit more patient in training her.
