Is It Time to Redecorate?

The Sleigh King Bed from Fine Furniture Design’s Belvedere Collection is a staple item that can have a new backdrop every few years.

How do you know when it’s time to redecorate? Are there any telltale signs that should signal the beginning of a DIY decorating project? There are many tasks that can be done when redecorating – there’s painting (which is the most common kind of redecorating technique), picking a new wallpaper, buying new furniture or simply moving the furniture around.

If you’re thinking of redecorating but are uncertain when and how to start, then here is a guide that can help you jump start the process –

Consider the Timing

Many interior designers agree that the right time to redecorate is every three to four years. Of course, the trends are forever changing so it would help if you update the rooms in your home now and then.

Even when you’re not up for a complete renovation, changing the bedding or color palette can go a long way. For instance, the bedroom is a place of relaxation so when it is beginning to look old and tired, then you’d certainly feel that it is time to update.

Taking as long as eight years is pretty long. Just imagine a nursery that’s not updated within those years. The eight year old will certainly feel out of place in that space.

Know Your Purpose

Updating the look of your home is crucial especially when it comes to your bedrooms. This room is a principle space so you must always stay on top of decorating the said room. Repainting the walls should be every 1-2 years.

A new coat of paint can breathe life to any space so every few years, reassess the rooms in your home and discover which ones would need to be freshened.

To Change or Not to Change

Eight to 10 years is a long time to stay with one design. If you don’t want to become too trendy, then interior designers advise that you stay with a neutral color palette and equally neutral design elements. Plus, remember that your taste could evolve so don’t make your design too permanent. Sure, a good mattress can see you through many decorating cycles but this does not mean that the bedding would also be the same throughout those years.

Be Ready for Change

Looking at the same design year in and year out could cause a visual fatigue. Plus, overtime, the design elements would look outdated and tired so it is best to change the look every few years.

While it is easy to get attached to some stuff as well as the layout of a home but if you want to avoid a worn out look, it is best to move a few things now and then. And if you have a few stuff that have been boxed for the past few months, then decide if they still deserve to be kept. Perhaps it might already be time to give or throw them away.

De-Stress with a New Look

Your home must never become a vision of disappointment. If you’re at home and you feel automatically stressed because of the things that you see, then it would be best to invest in a new look. Studies have proven that people do get tired of designs so you should have a crisp, new look every few years, else, the look you so praise now might look bland to you soon.

The Telltale Signs Appear

If your home is not only starting to look dingy but the stuff in it is also starting to look aged, then you know that it’s really time to do something. Unless these pieces are actually functional antiques, then you need to rethink whether they are still necessary in your home.

Having a number of cheap furniture pieces that are a few years old could spell the beginning of a redecorating project soon. These pieces just have a few years to boost so if you can, invest in more durable pieces soon.
