Designer Lillian August breathes new vitality into the traditional sofas and occasional wood pieces of her newest Drexel Heritage collection.
HIGH POINT, NC, OCTOBER, 2007. Every time the market thinks it has seen the best Lillian August could possibly offer, she reaches a whole new level of excitement, and her newest collection is no exception.
Ms. August has created a spirited, sophisticated group, combining fabrications and palettes evoking a menswear feel, with refined and tonal colorations. Glorious gray and pool blue are two of the foundation colors, and when mixed with her sensuous creamy silks and velvets evoke a luxurious aesthetic that is truly irresistible.
In keeping with the world of fashion, grays are present, and are central, whether used as a basic or combined in an accent. Reds, in various gradations, are wonderful and surprising additions to her palette.
As always Lillian maintained her signature look of fine antiques in her traditional furniture offerings, but now takes it to the tipping point by incorporating styles from tailored to Edwardian, always finding ways to keep it new and interesting. Never one to shy away from bold color and layering textures she achieves a look that is, at once, inspirational and provocative, yet has a true sense of balance and excellent proportions.
Her new occasional wood introduction for the Lillian August Collection captures the same spirit of her upholstery with elegant details & accents and unusual finishes, long the hallmark of this visionary designer. This season Lillian introduces four new sofa and wood groups and re-introduces previous best sellers with a fabulous fresh, new look. Here are the highlights:
The Upholstery Collection
The EDGEMONT is a classic Chanel style sofa that combines both comfort and fashion in a most appealing manner. Lillian has worked her magic on this silhouette by using revitalized washed khaki, a tone on tone linen fabric perfectly punctuated by throw pillows of tweeds and ottoman style striping accented with silk. The sofa is accented with nail head trim, and boasts panel arms and loose box cushions.
The sofa is accompanied by the EDGEMONT chair and ottoman covered in biscuit, wide wale velvet that Lillian has worked horizontally to give a fresh perspective and trimmed in nail head. The chair echoes the sofa’s panel arms. The loose box cushions are layered with throw pillows in the same neo-classic tweeds and silks.
The EDGEMONT, and its accompanying pieces, epitomize classic comfort married with fashion, and will also interpret perfectly into the many other beautiful fabrics in the Lillian August Collection.
The THOMPSON sofa is a classic Chesterfield style. Lillian has put a fresh twist on the piece by covering it in an ivory woven fabric, adding throw pillow accents of brown toned zebra print and moss velvet lightly infused with hints of gold. The accompanying chair is the GAINSFORD, a Byzantine gold finished, carved wood piece covered in a warm claret red velvet and silk foulard, accented with contrasting velvet welting.
The ADLER sofa is best described as a reinspired modified Chesterfield with vintage legs and splay arms. Lillian combined the traditional tufted back with a slight camel back, bench cushion, and covered it in a new, yet timeless herringbone in tones of copper and cashmere. Other fabrications include a beautiful golden mix done in a spin on the traditional paisley and rich toned tweeds. Accent throw pillows are the perfect foil with clean stripes of coppery earth tones, large cheetah print wovens and a sumptuous vicuna nubuck. The CARY slipper chair works beautifully with this group, done in a pale, textured faux bois, accented with a clean striped fabric.
The beautiful CHAPMAN is an English roll arm sofa with a bench seat and a tight back to allow for layering of throw pillows or additional accents. Lillian has designed this piece in a washed, distressed linen tone on tone with an olive cast. She accents it with a beautiful silk ribbed fabric in olive and champagne, and throw pillow of sumptuous Italian paisley velvet in lovely muted tones. The accompanying chair and ottoman, KILBOURN, are standouts shown in wonderful tweed with fine copper lines, accented with linen paisley throw pillows.
The elegant LONDON sofa is re-introduced this season in graceful, gray silk tweed. Throw pillows on this piece are done in tony gray velvet and a contemporary take on gray houndstooth and a handsome linen print with a vintage embroidered theme adds a feminine fashion touch.
The Occasional Wood Collection
The IMPERIAL, an elegant chinoiserie mirror, is a rare fashion piece that commands attention in any setting. Beautifully hand painted, it evokes the spirit of luxury.
The STRATFORD CHEST, a graceful interpretation of a high style antique has instant appeal. Luxurious walnut and mahogany veneers have striking contrast, with inlay of black trim and a classic urn motif design.
The rich ornamentation of the DYNASTY CONSOLE makes this piece a statement to remember. Striking in red chinoiserie, and defined by its versatility and craftsmanship, it can be used as an office credenza, sofa table, or a standout focal point in any room.
Lovely proportions and aged yew wood makes the KENDALL side table elegant and sporty. It is an adaptation of Lillian’s best selling Stanhope cocktail table.
“As I was designing this collection I felt the spirit of classic English tailoring, and I love where it took me…down a lovely road of tweeds and herringbone, soft velvets and creamy silks. The finished products, while timeless, are perfect examples of how to reinterpret the classics with vitality,” says Lillian.
