EUROPEAN RETREAT BY DREXEL HERITAGE:
RICH CONTINENTAL STYLING FOR TODAY…AND TOMORROW
High Point, NC (October 1, 2007)—Drexel Heritage puts a current time stamp on rich
continental styling in European Retreat, a major casual furniture collection debuting at
the fall High Point Market.
The designs mix French, Italian, Spanish and Tuscan design themes with American
practicality for a romantic, casual approach to old world styling. Graciously elegant, but
far from formal, the furniture creates a look that makes one comfortable whether kicked
back in jeans or dressed up in black tie and tails.
Intelligent detailing and lighter scaling drive European Retreat in a more sophisticated
direction without sacrificing quintessential European charm. What is particularly
noteworthy is the incredible patina. “It may take our skilled craftspeople several hours to
hand rasp and plane; cow tail and apply natural distressing to replicate the depth of finish
found on European antiques. It requires a lot of time and finesse to duplicate the
softening effects of time,” says Lenwood Rich, Drexel Heritage President and Chief
Operating Officer.
Typical of old world originals, European Retreat incorporates hand carving, rustic
antiqued wooden tops, and metal accents. Crafted primarily in figured cherry, the over 20
designs are enlivened with inlays of walnut and cherry.
Bowing to the need for modern convenience, Drexel Heritage tucks function into almost
every corner of European Retreat. Behind the façade of a door chest you will find the
perfect home for a small TV or other audio/visual equipment. To facilitate viewing, the
chest’s doors swing all the way back and the top drawer-front drops down to clear the
way for infra-red signals. This same drop-down drawer construction is incorporated in a
traditional dresser, should a plasma TV be placed on the top.
Other savvy styling appears in a plasma console with glass doors (to allow passage of
infra-red signals) and vertical pull-out doors at either end for CD storage. For the home
office, there is a rococo French style desk with a fold down front that accommodates a
computer keyboard.

Not all the function packed into European Retreat is associated with technology. There is
a small pull-out in the middle of a drawer chest to keep jewelry in place (and hidden); a
touch latch on a buffet to facilitate bottle storage; and the base of a dining deck has a
swing-out door at either end for extra stowage.
With its appreciation for craftsmanship and respect for comfort and practicality, Drexel
Heritage’s European Retreat beautifully reflects the vibrant and fearless energy of the
European landscape, intelligently melded with the practicality of present day America.
