Placerville, once known as Dry Diggins and then Hangtown during the gold rush era, is a beautiful mountainous city located where highway 49 meets highway 50 between El Dorado Hills and South Lake Tahoe. Placerville is still called Old Hangtown because of all of the hangings that took place there in the late 1800’s. The Hangman’s Tree stump can still be found in the cellar of a bar on Main Street as well as the historic Bell Tower, which is also found on Main Street. Once frequented by minors and the Southern Pacific Railroad, Placerville is now a place for lumber, agriculture, tourism, picturesque recreational areas, car and truck racing, and fine wine production. Residence can enjoy the wonderful community, history, and landscape.
